DIRT Report: Highlights Need to Call “…industry data collected for 2011 - 2012 suggests that less than one percent of excavations preceded by a one call notification experience damages.” “Analysis of the damages reported to the CGA’s DIRT database for 2012 further demonstrates that approximately one-quarter (25%) were the result of the failure to make notification prior to excavation.” “…a call to the one call center (811) is therefore the simplest and most effective means to reduce or eliminate excavation related underground utility damages.”
Was a locate request made prior to excavation?
When looking specifically at incidents where answer to question is “no”…
“Small fencing, irrigation, and landscaping
contractors were most involved in events that included a failure to make a notification prior to
excavation.”
Tools
Exemptions •Two Congressional DP Mandates
•Grant Eligibility: States with exemptions for state and local governments from participation in one call notification system requirements are ineligible for One Call and Damage Prevention Grants •Study: PHMSA must study the impact of removing all exemptions involving mechanical equipment •Issues: Defining exemptions, applying the exemptions, lack of available damage, measuring the impact of removing exemptions
Average damage rate for 18 states with five or more notice exemptions compared to 18 states with less than five notice exemptions Source: 2012 DIRT data

According to our monitoring services, Nielsen ratings and ad rates for TV networks: There were 20 national airings (mostly on ESPN, Fox Sports 1 and MLB Network) of the home run/811 message. 5.1 million people saw either the original broadcast or highlight packages that showed the 811 message. The cost of that exposure as advertising would have been $204,850!
