The history of Detla(R) pesticides Is long. dating back to the mld-1930'o;. In 1970 I:'etia(R) GAS EX-a w .. s int,-oduced into the United States. DetlaCR) Tablets and DetlaCR) F'ellets wel-e I ntl-oduced In 1977. The manufactur'e,-, Det I a Freybel-q GMBH, West Germany wa~ the early pioneer In the development of hydrogen phosphide as a fumigant gas.

PRDr'UCT DESCRIPTION Both I:'etia(R) PeLLets and I:'etla(R) Tablets are a mixture of aluminUm phosphide (5i'X by weight), a(llmonium cAI-bamate and m-ea which Is pressed Into tab let and/ol- peLLet form. The neal-ly sphel-Ical peLLets al-e about .3/8" In dlametel- and we I gh 0.6 gl-ams each. Thzo tab lets are either disc shaped (4/5" in d i ametel- and 1/5" th i d,) 01- sphel- i ca lin shape (5/8" in dlametel-) and weigh ;;.0 gl-ams each. A peLLet wi LL pl-oduce about 0.2 gl-am hydl-ogen phosph ide, -the- tab let about 1.0 gram. Both react with atmospheric moisture to produce hydrogen phosphide (PH3) in the following way:

AlF' + 3 H20 A L(UH)3 + F'H3

Warm, humid air accelerates the reaction while cool, dry air has the opposite effect. FOI- example, when moistul-e and temperature of the fumigated commodity are high, decomposition of Detia(R) may be complete in less than 3 days. However,at moderate temperatures and low humidities decomposition may re,ulre 5 days or more. This reaction starts slowly, gradually acceler8tes and then tapers off again as the aluminum phosphide is spent.

Detla(R) PelLets and TabLets aLyo contain ammonium carbamate which Llbel-ates ammonia and cdi-f:oon dioxide as foLLows:

NH2 COONH4 2NH3 + C02

These gases al-e essentiaLLy nonfLammabLe and act as inel-ting a~ents to reduce fire hazards. lhe ammonIa gas also serves as a warning agent.

Spent Detla~R) is a gray-white powder composed aLmost entireLy of aluminum hydroxide and other approved Inert ingredients. If properly exposed, the spent Deti~(R) wilL normally contain onLy a smalL amount of unreact~d aluminum phosphide and may be disposed of wi thollt hazal·d. It Is DIl:t considered a hazardous waste. However, the partially spent reMidue from IncompleteLy exposed Detia(R) re,ulres speciaL care. Precautions and Instructions for further deactivation and disposaL wiLL be given Late\" in this manuaL.

The tablets are packaged =00 to a flask. The peLlets are packaged 1660 to a fLask.

The aLum I num fLasks in wh i ch they al-e packaged are reseaLable and seamLess. Their shelf Life is aLmost unlimited as Long as the packaging remains weLL £~aLed and intact. Once opened. the flasks may be tightly reseaLed and stored for future use.

n. WH,T IS HYDROGEN PHOSPHIT.IE'? Hydl-oge"O phosphide. mo,-e com~lonLy l-efen-ed to as phosphine, is a coLorLess gas which is toxic to insects, humans, and other forms of animaL Life. It Is very mobi le with a high vapOl- p,-essure. Thus, the peneil-at i ng caf'ab i L i ty of hydrogen phosphide is great. The combination of high molecuLar activity, vapOl- p,-eSSUl-e and toxicity to insects at Low dosages accounts for its wide acceptance as a fumigant.

Slnc~ hydrog~n phosphide is a mobile gas and wiLL penetrate to all parts of the storage structure. dosage must be bas~d upon the total volume of th~ space being fumigated anrl not on the amount of bulk commodity it contains. FOl- example. the same amount of Detia(R) is re,uired to treat a 30.000 bushel silo whether It is full or not. The following dosage ranges are allowed for bulk and space fumigations.

NfJTEI The max imum dosage a Llowed for dates. nuts and dl" ied fruits is 40 tablets or 200 pellets per 1000 cubic feet.

These dosages should not be exceeded. It is important to realize that shortened exposure period cannot be compensated for with an increased dosage.

l·he wille dosage ranges listed above aloe designed to accommodate the variety of fumigation situation~ that might occur. The major factor In selecting dosage is the capability of the structure to hold hydrogen phosphide during the eKpasure period and thus obtain and sustain lethal concentrations throughout. It 15 more difficult to obtain penetration of gas throughout the structure in bulk stored commodities. An example of this is the treatment of gl"ain stol"ed in flat stol"age In which fumigant cannot be uniformlY added to the grain but must be probed or surface app lied.

Although It Is permissible to choo~e from the full range of dosages listed above, the following dosage ranges are l"ecommended fOl" the val"ious types of fumigations.

Some structures can only be treated when completely tarped.

Above this level or in situdtion$ whel-e the hydrogen phosph I de concentl-at I on I s unknown, a NIOSH/MSHA apPI-oved, self-conta i ned bl-eath i n<] appal-atus (SCBA) or i ts e~u i va Lent must be used. The NIllSH/OSHA Pocl:et Guide, 8-85, DHEW/NIOSH 78-210, lists these and other types of approved respirdtors and the concentration limits at which .they may be used.

3. REOUIREMENT!: F(JF~ AVAILABILITY OF RESPIRATORY PROTECTION

Respil-atory Pl-otection must be oliva I table at the site of application in case it Is needed when applying Detia(R) from within the structure being fumigated. An approved full face gas mask - phosphine canister combination 01-

self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or its e~ulvalent must be available at the site of application. If SCBA or Its e~ulvalent Is not avai table at tile application site, it must be <'Ivail.,ble locally, fOIexample, at a fire station or rescue s~uad.

Respiratory protection need not be available for application from outside the area to be fumigated such as addi1 Ion of tablets or pellets to automatic d i spens I ng dev ices, etc., if exp osun>s ab ove the permitted exposure limit wi II not be encountered.

Respiratory protection need nut be oliva I table for outdoor app 1 Icat Ions.

If monitoring e~ulpment Is nut avai lable on a farm and application cannot be done from outside the structure. an approved canister respirator must be worn during application from within the enclosed indoor area.

M. APF'l_ICATOR AND WOHI<ER EXPOSURE 1. HYDROGEN PHOSPHJ:llE EXPOSURE L.IMITS

Exposure -to hydrogen phosphide musi noi exceed the 8 hour TWA of 0.3 ppm for applicators and workers during application. Application Is defined as the time period cove,-ing the opening of the flnlt contalne,-, applying the appropriate dosage of fumigant and closl~g up the 5ite to be fuml~ated. All pen!lons in the i,-eided 51 te and In adjacent indoor areas are covered by this exposure standard.

After appllcailon Is compLeted worker or applicator exposure must noi ~xceed 0.3 ppm maximum concentration. Such exposures may occur because of leakagd Into ~nclos~d areas from fumigation sites, during reentry or du,-l ng tl-ansfel- of uni)€wated commod I ty.
