The Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship ProgramFostering mutual understanding between the people of Algeria and the United States

What is the Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship?Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarships enable Algerians to pursue graduate-level study in theUnited States, build leadership skills, and exchange cultural understanding with Americans.Scholarship recipients will study at a select university in the United States for two years.

Who can apply? Scholarships are open to Algerian citizens living in Algeria who: hold a minimum of a BA/BS degree; are interested in pursuing graduate study level (Primarily Masters) in any field (except medicine); are proficient in English; are able to function easily in academic and social settings; hold a recent TOEFL-IBT score (within one year) of 89 or higher.

What is the Fulbright Science and Technology Award?The International Fulbright Science and Technology (S&T) Award for outstanding foreignstudents is designed to be among the most prestigious scholarships in science and technology andprovides for PhD study in science, technology, or engineering at top U.S. institutions.

Who can apply? Applicants must be Algerian citizens who have completed a Master’s degree and who have arecent TOEFL-IBT score of 90 or higher and a GRE General Exam score of at least 700. It is highlyrecommended that the applicant have received his/her Master’s degree in the same or a relatedfield for which he/she plans to pursue Ph.D. study.

Fulbright Scholar Program Advanced Research and University Lecturing Awards

What is the Fulbright Scholar Program?The mission of the Fulbright Scholar Program is to increase mutual understanding between thepeople of the United States and people of other countries. It aims to provide educational exchangeexperiences to a maximum number of individuals not previously afforded such an opportunity.The experience should be of intrinsic value to the scholar, the recipient’s home institution, itsfaculty and its students, as well as to the U.S. host institution. Fulbright Scholars serve as culturalambassadors and should be prepared to speak about their countries, cultures and research toacademic and community groups.

Who can apply? Eligible applicants have to be Algerian Citizens with a Doctoral degree or equivalent professional training or experience at the time of application, provide a detailed statement of proposed activity for research or lecturing at a U.S. institution, have proficiency in English appropriate to the proposed lecturing or research project to be carried out in the United States.

The Humphrey Program provides a basis forestablishing long-lasting, productive partnerships and relationships between citizens of the UnitedStates and their professional counterparts in other countries.

The MEPI Student Leaders Program

What MEPI Student Leaders Program?The MEPI Student Leaders Program is a fully-funded five-week intensive leadership trainingprogram in the United States for undergraduate students. Participants develop leadership andcollective problem-solving skills, exploring U.S. history and culture to expand their leadershipskills and knowledge. The Program consists of hands-on leadership training workshops, academicsessions, and community service projects. The program runs from June to August, 2010.

Who can apply? The MEPI Student Leaders Program is open to Algerian citizens who are first, second, or thirdyear university students, between 19 and 23 years of age, are proficient in English, demonstratecharacteristics of leadership, and have a strong interest in learning about the United States.

Civic Education and Leadership Fellowship (CELF) program

What is the Civic Education and Leadership Fellowship (CELF) program?Civic Education and Leadership Fellowship (CELF) is a program organized by The Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) and it is an opportunity to participate in individually tailored programs at the Maxwell School for Public Affairs at Syracuse University (http://www.maxwell.syr.edu) in upstate New York.The CELF is intended to be a 5 month fellowship opportunity for university teachers and scholars.

Who can apply? The ideal candidate for the CELF program must have at least five years of experience working in social science disciplines, including political science, public administration, law, media, journalism, and communications, along with a minimum of three years experience working in an accredited institution of higher education.With an English language fluency to function successfully in a high-level academic andprofessional environment; applicants will also be requested to submit TOEFL scores ata later date.

What is the MEPI Legal and Business Fellowship Program ?The LBFP provides Arab women lawyers and businesswomen ages 22-32 with a four week executive seminar training at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton and Annenberg schools and a four-month fellowship at either a top-tier law firm or fortune 500 company.

MEPI Tomorrow’s Leaders Scholarship Program

What is the MEPI Tomorrow’s Leaders Scholarship Program?The Tomorrow’s Leaders Scholarship Program provides approximately 50 scholarships per year to high school students in the Middle East and North Africa who are economically disadvantaged, but who have the drive and energy to be leaders. Selected participants will attend a U.S.-accredited university in the region. The American University in Cairo (AUC), Lebanese American University (LAU), and the American University of Beirut (AUB) are the current host institutions. Scholarship recipients receive an undergraduate degree and specialized civics-based training to include a semester abroad in the U.S., as well as internship opportunities with local public, civil society, or private-sector organizations. The primary objective is to build a cadre of university-age leaders who are civic-minded, intellectually able, and professionally skilled, and who will become the community, business, and national leaders of the future. Selected students will join the 93 existing Tomorrow’s Leaders already studying at AUB, AUC, and LAU. Scholarship recipients may pursue an undergraduate degree in an eligible field at one of the three host institutions. Recipients will also be expected to engage in community service activities and participate in internships. The scholarship covers travel, academic fees for four years of university at AUB, AUC, or LAU, a study abroad experience in the U.S., accident and sickness insurance, housing, and a monthly allowance.

Near East & South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Program

What is Near East & South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Program?The Near East and South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Program, NESA UGRAD, is a part of GLOBAL UGRAD, a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State. NESA UGRAD will award scholarships to outstanding students from countries of the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia for one-year, undergraduate, non-degree studies programs in the United States at a diverse network of accredited two- and four-year institutions. Participants will be enrolled full-time and will live on-campus with an American roommate. Participants will not select host institutions. Placements will not be changed. Preference will be given to those in the fields of humanities, social sciences and education although other fields will also be considered.

Who can apply? Candidates will be considered without respect to race, color, religion, national origin, or gender. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Competition for the NESA UGRAD is merit-based and open to anyone who:

Is a citizen, national or permanent resident qualified to hold a valid passport issued by the country from which applicant is applying;

Is completing his/her final year of secondary school or enrolled in first-, second-, third-year full-time undergraduate study at the time of application for the classical educational system or enrolled in first-, and second year full-time undergraduate study for the LMD educational system at a registered academic institution in his/her country and is in good academic standing. Part-time students or correspondence students are not eligible; • Submits a complete application with all required documents by the application deadline; • Is able to begin the academic exchange program in the United States in August 2011; • Is committed to returning to his/her home country after completion of the program; and • Is proficient in spoken and written English at the time of application.

Youth Leadership Program

What YLP?YLP is an intensive six week summer program for Algerian teenagers. It consists of two weeks ofintensive English language and orientation instruction followed by a 4-week study program in theUS.

Who can apply? The program is designed for high school students between the ages of 15 and 17 who:Have a demonstrated leadership aptitude and an interest in community service Have sufficient proficiency in English to communicate effectively Exhibit flexibility, maturity, integrity, good social skills, and open-mindedness Have the motivation necessary to be active and successful exchange participants Will attend at least one more year of secondary school after the program (e.g., will not graduate

before spring 2010).

What is the Study of the U.S. Institutes?The SUSI program is a fully-funded five-week intensive academic program in the U.S. for undergraduate student leaders, Participants develop leadership and collective problem-solving skills, while exploring and gaining a deeper understanding of U.S. history and culture. The Institute consists of hands-on leadership training workshops, group discussions, teambuilding, effective communication, and management skills. Community service projects, optional home stays and other opportunities for interaction with American peers, and other cultural activities are also included.

Who can apply? The SUSI Program is open to Algerian citizens who are first, second, or third year of college oruniversity, between 18 and 25 years of age, are proficient in English, demonstrate characteristics ofleadership, and have a strong interest in learning about the United States.

Study of the United States Institutes for Scholars

What is the Institute for Scholars?Study of the United States Institutes is an intensive post-graduate level academic programwith integrated study tours that provide foreign university faculty and other scholars the opportunity to deepen their understanding of American society, culture and institutions. The ultimate goal is to strengthen curricula and to improve the quality of teaching about the United States in academic institutions abroad. Pending ECA grant approval, the institutes will take place at various colleges and universities throughout the United States over the course of six weeks beginning in June 2009.

Who can apply? The Institute for Scholars is open to Algerian mid-career citizens, typically between the ages of 30-50, highly-motivated and experienced professionals from institutions of higher education. Whilethe educational level of participants will likely vary, most should have graduate degrees and havesubstantial knowledge of the thematic area of the Institute

The International Visitors Program

What is the International Visitors Program?The International Visitors (IV) Program brings exchange participants to the United States from allover the world each year to meet and confer with their professional counterparts and to experiencethe U.S. firsthand. The emphasis of the International Visitor (IV) Program is to strengthen andimprove mutual understanding through direct contact between current and emerging leaders offoreign nations and the people of the United States. The U.S. Embassy in Algiers selectsoutstanding mid-career professionals to visit the United States to meet and confer with theircolleagues and to have in-depth exposure to America, its culture, and its people. Programstypically last from 3 weeks, involve travel to several American cities, and are fully organized bythe Department of State. Programs are conducted in both English and Arabic.

Who can apply? The International Visitors (IV) Program is open to Algerian citizens who are mid-careerprofessionals in either the public or private sector. Candidates should be between 35 and 50 yearsold, with at least five years of professional experience.
