I have raised cattle all my life, or at least since getting my first feeder calves when I was in the 6th grade, yet I still find the start of calving season exciting and full of anxiety. How will the first time heifers do? Will there be any abnormal presentations? Can I save them all and fi- nally have a 100% calf crop? I like to think I have learned from my past mistakes and I am becoming wiser. But agri- culture and raising cattle have a way of bringing me back to reality in a hurry. There is little doubt that I will not become wealthy raising cattle and farming, but I certainly feel rich at certain times of the year. Calving season is definitely one of those times. I have often wondered if breeders of other breeds of cattle are as kind and compassionate to their fellow breeders as I have experienced during my privileged opportunity to serve as a member of Council and as an officer. I am confident in stating that with very few exceptions, you are members of one of the finest cattle breed associations in existence. To those members of the committees that have been hard at work in debate, doing research, or preparing reports and rec- ommendations for the Spring Council meeting, please accept our sincere appreciation for your service. President Greg Hipple

We have had spring-like weather teasing us in the Midwest this past week. Howev-er, with the return to reality with winter conditions, “spring” calving has begun at Sutliff Belties. I have raised cattle all my life, or at least

since getting my first feeder calves when I was in the 6th grade, yet I still find the start of calving season exciting and full of anxiety. How will the first time heifers do? Will there be any abnormal presentations? Can I save them all and fi-nally have a 100% calf crop? I like to think I have learned from my past mistakes and I am becoming wiser. But agri-culture and raising cattle have a way of bringing me back to reality in a hurry. There is little doubt that I will not become wealthy raising cattle and farming, but I certainly feel rich at certain times of the year. Calving season is definitely one of those times.

We are finalizing the plans for our trip to Fryeburg, Maine for the National Belted Galloway Sale and the Spring Coun-cil Meeting that is held there every three years. The members of the New England Galloway Group that have extended their hospitality to this Iowa farm boy and his wife(who have never been to New England) have been most humbling to us. To those members of the committees that have been hard at work in debate, doing research, or preparing reports and rec-ommendations for the Spring Council meeting, please accept our sincere appreciation for your service. Together, we can make things better for all of us and our chosen breed of cat-tle. Welcome to spring!

News from Napa, California Stewart Ranch, Napa, California recently showed their heifer, Snapchat at MJC Cattle Classic, a club calf jackpot show in California. They showed Snapchat in a commercial class by weight. Owner Ailene Pritchett Tarap communicated that she won her class of ten heifers with judge Miles Toenyes of Illinois com-menting, "This is by far the best Belted Galloway I have ever seen." The next day Toenyes posted about the heifer on Insta-gram. Snapchat was also shown at their local fair and was judged by Ryan Rash of Texas. He awarded her Champion Heifer and stated, "This heifer is the Queen of the Nile and Snapchat wor-thy!" Ailene told us, “Belties can compete against these other breeds. It just takes that special one!”

About bulls … Before advertising a young male be sure he is well conformed, tracks properly, has good legs and feet, and exhibits good weight gains. We should have data available on his birth weight, 205-day weaning weight, and yearling weight. If he's reached breeding age (around 18 months), it's definitely a plus to have his semen checked for quantity and motility, and uniform scrotal development ( two normal sized testicles). Any data available should appear in your advertisement along with his birth date and the names of his sire and dam. It is re-quired that registration numbers be included on bulls advertised for sale in the classifieds.

Parentage Testing Megan Rolf PhD, Kansas State University Breed registries today rely on DNA testing to verify par-entage in an animal's pedigree. Every animal has a genetic code in every cell of the body. Several billion chemical sub-units of a material called deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) constitute the long, threadlike chromosomes (and the genes on those chromosomes) that exist in the nucleus of every cell. The genetic code for every aspect of that individual can thus be found in any body cell, whether blood, bone, hair or muscle. Since the genetic code of an individual animal is present in every body cell, a tiny portion of that animal can be utilized to verify its identity. Samples of blood or hair (containing the hair roots) are the most com-monly used portions that are sent to a lab to analyze for identifying that animal. DNA testing is now the standard tool for parentage verification and/or individual identity testing for all species. (Heather Smith Thomas)

Parentage testing not only ensures correct pedigree, but can provide information to make important management deci-sions for commercial producers. Knowing some of the basics of parentage testing and how it works can help a producer understand the benefits of testing. While the need to verify parentage for embryo calves may be obvious, the benefits of parentage testing outside of this unique situation might not seem quite so obvious. Take a producer who runs multiple bulls in one pasture. Although all sires may have acceptable calving ease, there may be some calving difficulty. Knowing the most likely sire of each calf allows producers to make more informed decisions relative to future grouping of bull batteries based on calf performance including potential calving difficul-ties. Additionally, producers using AI followed by natural service sires may have some calves with birth dates that are too ambiguous to determine the sire, and the only way to determine this correctly is by using parentage testing. This knowledge aids commercial producers who wish to retain only AI sired heifers as replacements or seedstock producers who rely on accurate pedigree information. The concept behind using genetic markers for parentage testing is based on the fact that each animal receives one copy of each gene, called an allele, from each par-ent. We can genotype an animal to determine what markers they have and compare that to potential parents to determine if those markers are consistent with that individual being a parent of the offspring in question. One common misconception of parentage test-ing is that the test confirms parentage absolutely based on matching DNA of offspring to their parents. Rather, parent-

age testing is about excluding animals that cannot be the parents of a particular offspring, rather than proving that an animal is the parent. In the simplest terms, we use the genet-ic markers to exclude animals as a possible parent, leaving those remaining (hopefully only one) as the most likely par-ent for that offspring. To illustrate this concept, let’s look at an example. There are three potential sires for a calf with a known dam. For this example, we will be using five different ge-netic markers, in this case A through E, which we hope will be enough to exclude all but one of the possible sires. We will genotype the calf, the dam, and each of the three possi-ble sires on a parentage panel where each genetic marker can have two possible alleles (a capital or lowercase letter) and three possible genotypes (two capital letters, two lowercase letters, or one of each). The results are shown in the table below (check marks indicate consistent inheritance). In order to determine whether we can exclude one of the sires, let’s start with locus A. If you’ll recall, animals get one allele (genetic marker) from each parent, so the first thing to do is to figure out which allele the calf possesses came from the dam. At locus A, the calf’s genotype is Aa and the dam’s is AA. Because the dam can only provide an A allele regardless of which chromosome she passes on, the calf’s A (pronounced big A or capital A) had to have come from the dam, which means that the a (pronounce little a or lowercase a) came from the sire. If we look at the three sire genotypes at locus A, each one has at least one a allele. Any one of them could have been the potential sire so we cannot exclude them. Now let’s look at locus B. The calf is BB, and the dam is Bb, so she had to have passed on her B allele to her calf. So the other B allele came from the sire. Sire One and Sire Two both have B alleles, but Sire Three does not. We can exclude Sire Three as the possible sire of this calf. If we continue this process for all five loci, we can see that the C locus does not let us exclude any possible sires be-cause they all have c alleles and the E locus is also unin-formative for this parentage test. However, if we look at lo-cus D, we can see that the dam passed on a D, so the calf’s d allele came from his sire. The only bull with a d allele is Sire

Two, so Sire Three (which was already excluded at locus B) and Sire One can be eliminated, and we could conclude that the most likely sire of the calf is Sire Two.

Galloway So-

ciety utilizes UC Davis for all DNA and parentage verifica-

tion. UC Davis uses microsatellite technology to analyze Belt-

ed Galloway DNA. Performance traits offered by the SNP test

are not accurate for Belted Galloway cattle because they are

based on Angus genetics.
