President Greg Hipple

It is almost summertime here in the

Midwest. The time of year when the

cows are on pastures, crops are grow-

ing, hay making will soon be underway,

and everything is outdoors --even the

bugs. It is a busy time, yet fun and enjoyable. There is

so much going on.

Somewhere, someone you

know is having a great

year. Somewhere, some-

one else is having their

worst year ever. Life

seems to be like that, as is

farming. Agriculture,

more specifically animal

agriculture, has a way of

humbling us on a regular

basis. Year-after-year, the

anticipation seems to in-

crease, those mating selec-

tions made last year, did

they turn out? Your deci-

sion to move up or to de-

lay the start of calving for

better weather, did that

pan out for you? What about your goal of that elusive

100% calf crop?

Your Council has made some decisions that will go into

effect January 1, 2018 that they feel are the right deci-

sions to move the breed forward, and more importantly,

to preserve and protect the integrity and genetics of this

historic heritage breed. We, as members of the Belted

Galloway Society, need to understand these simple

changes that will be going into place, support the rea-

sons they were enacted, and be willing to reap the bene-

fits they will bring to all of

us. As the final details are

worked out, the U.S. Beltie

News will cover in detail the

DNA and hypotrichosis test-

ing requirements. Please stay

tuned.

Like I mentioned previously, it seems to be a very hectic world right now. I often struggle to find the peace that has always drawn me to agri-culture and specifically Belt-ed Galloway cattle. As I did chores this morning and was pondering how I was going to put my thoughts for this month to paper, watching the cows with their calves in the pasture, the bottle calf that

nudged me after I fed him his morning bottle was a gen-tle reminder.

Each year people from around the country visit Mil-waukee for one of the Midwest's largest cattle exposi-tions – World Beef Expo. Over four hundred exhibitors from 16 states displayed, exhibited, or sold cattle at the 2016 World Beef Expo. During Expo 2017, more than two dozen breed shows will take place. In addition to the open and junior Cattle shows, World Beef Expo will offer a wide variety of activities. A multi-breed and club calf sale, the Supreme Champion Cattle Drive (a spectacular event showcasing the best of the best), top-notch educational seminars, an indoor/outdoor trade show, plus a youth sweepstakes contest, will round out the schedule of activities at the venue. Are you interested in consigning an animal to the multi-breed sale? Both live, semen, and embryo lots may be consigned to the Midwest National Belted Galloway Sale through Larry Martin Cattle Sales. Forms may be accessed at larrymartinlivestock.com or worldbeefex-po.com. Entries are due August 1. For more information please contact Greg Hipple (319) 430-6664 or Larry Martin (217) 433-0242. Cattle do not have to be shown to sell but must be halter broken. People of all ages are welcome to view, show, buy and sell cattle, while enjoying a weekend of fun with friends and family! All events are open to the public. We invite you to join the Belted Galloway fun at the 2017 World Beef Expo!

About Classifieds

Your classified’s required contact information — name, farm, loca-tion, phone and email. All classified ads are automatically placed on beltie.org with a two-month limit on classified insertions. Photos are $10 placed on beltie.org only.

Email ads to [email protected] or by fax (608) 527-4811 or phone (608) 220-1091. We encourage members to submit ads the last two weeks of the month.

About bulls … Before advertising a young male be sure he is well conformed, tracks properly, has good legs and feet, and exhibits good weight gains. We should have data available on his birth weight, 205-day weaning weight, and yearling weight. If he's reached breeding age (around 18 months), it's definitely a plus to have his semen checked for quantity and motility, and uniform scrotal development ( two normal sized testicles). Any data available should appear in your advertisement along with his birth date and the names of his sire and dam. It is re-quired that registration numbers be included on bulls advertised for sale in the classifieds.

Community of Breeders James and Kathleen Gleason of Orion Farm in Henniker, New Hampshire were new to the Belted Galloway breed when they lost their home in a fire. Luckily, the Gleasons and their four chil-dren were not home at the time. Jim shared this story: My family and I are new to the Belted Galloway

breed and newly-minted members of the New England Gal-loway Group. We have a story to share about what it means to be a member of the New England Galloway Group.

On August 5, 2016, we lost our home to fire. It is the only home our four children have ever known. The good news is that none of us were home at the time so there were no physical injuries.

Two days after our home burned I was in a pasture string-ing electric fencing to be charged by a generator I bor-rowed from a friend. Much to my initial consternation, I was interrupted by my clanging cellphone. Calling was Heidi Baker, herd manager at the well-known Alder-mere Farm in Maine. She was calling to tell me, not ask me, that she was coming to pick-up my family’s Belties so that I would not have to deal with them after the fire. I protested that we could manage and there was certainly no reason for her to spend six or more hours of round trip hauling a stock trailer to save my family some inconvenience. As we conclud-ed our conversation, I felt satisfied that we had effec-tively communicated. Apparently, we had not. The next morning, while I was at work, I received anoth-er telephone call from Heidi Baker indicating that Richard and Susan Paul of Partridge Meadow Farm in Westmoreland, New Hampshire, were enroute with stock trailer in tow to pick up my family’s Bel-

ties and deliver them to Maine. Heidi politely suggested, as only she can, that the courteous thing for me to do would be to help Richard and Susan load the Belties. Heidi, I discovered, can be “persuasive”. I left work and headed to Orion Farm. Richard and Susan Paul were already backed up to the barn paddock getting ready to load some Belties. They explained they were going to tow the Belties two and a half hours east to a location in Maine where they would meet Heidi Baker and her trailer. In no time at all the Belties were headed to Maine. (How much fun would it have been to watch the Belties being transferred from a Partridge Meadow Farm trailer to an Aldermere Farm trailer in the middle of a rest area off a busy inter-state? That could be a story for another time).

It is particularly noteworthy that I never called Heidi

Baker, Susan and Richard Paul or anyone to complain about our home fire. Heidi Baker, Richard and Susan Paul simply took charge and made life a whole lot simpler for another Beltie farm. I can tell you that being burned out of a home is emotionally traumatic. I can also tell you that it creates a little bit of inconvenience in life. For darn sure I can tell you though that people like Heidi, Richard and Susan can rekindle faith in mankind and uplift some spirits. Their response and genuine concern were humbling, ap-preciated, and not soon forgotten.

I am beginning to suspect that there just might be some-thing to this sense of community that Beltie breeders pro-mote.
