PROPER FIT OF THE ARMY GREEN SERVICE UNIFORM (MEN)

COAT: The collar of the coat fits snugly without gapping, with one fourth inch to one half inch of the shirt collar showing above the coat collar at the back. The coat fits smoothly over the back and shoulders. The front of the coat overlaps without pulling or gapping. The buttons present a straight vertical line. The coat is slightly form-fitting around the waist (but not so snug that it causes the coat fronts to protrude) yet has some fullness and a draped effect. Four to six inches of looseness (from the natural waistline to the waist of the coat) should be equally distributed around the circumference of the waist to provide comfort when moving. The coat lies smoothly over the seat so that the back vents do not pull or gap. The bottom edge of the coat is even and falls one inch below the crotch. The sleeves extend one inch below the bottom of the wrist bone and cover the shirt sleeves.

SHIRT AND TIE: The tie is tied so the tip will fall in an area ranging from two inches above the top of the belt buckle to the bottom of the belt buckle. The tie may be worn in a Windsor, halflWindsor or four-in-hand knot and fits snugly and close to the neck. The shirt collar is smooth and lies close to the neck with about one half inch space between the shirt collar and neck. Shoulder seams are at the midpoint of the shoulders. The back and shoulders are smooth without wrinkles or ti ghtness. The front of the shirt presents a straight line of buttons. There is no evidence of gapping or pulling and the "gig-line" is straight. The bottom of the sleeve extends to the bottom part of the wrist bone. The belt has no more than two inches of extra webbing to permit adjustment.

TROUSERS: The bottom of the waistband rests on the hip bone-plus or minus one half inch. The waist fits with a slight amount of looseness, but should not form a "pleated" effect when the belt is worn and tightened. The seat fits loosely without wrinkling. The top of the leg blends into the seat. The bottom edge of the back of the trouser leg falls midway between the heel top and shoe top. The bottom edge of the front of the trouser leg rests on the middle of the instep and may have a slight break in the crease.

PROPER FIT OF THE ARMY GREEN SERVICE UNIFORM (WOMEN)

COAT: The coat has been designed to look equally well over both slacks and skirt, hence the longerthan average length. The coat fits snugly around the back of the neck without a gap or break under the collar. Across the back, it fits smoothly without too much tightness or wrinkles and with sufficient flexibility for arm movement. The coat fits smoothly across the bust without the button at the bust popping open or gapping. The coat fits easily over the hips and conforms to the waistline curve without blousing. The bottom button of the coat falls about one inch below the natural waistline. The coat front, below the waist, must overlap without pulling or gapping so the front of the coat will present a straight line from the top button to the coat hem and lies smoothly and flat without twists, pleats or bulges. The back vent must also overlap without pulling or gapping. The coat is designed so that if the coat size is correct in other areas, the coat length, with few exceptions, will be correctly proportioned. The bottom edge of the sleeve falls one inch below the bottom edge of the wrist bone, and covers the shirt sleeves.

NECKTAB: The necktab is centered over the top button of the shirt. The collar lies smoothly on the neck without bulging and is not too tight.

SHIRT: The shirt fits smoothly over the back and shoulders without wrinkles or tightness. There is no gapping at the buttons across the bust. The length of the shirt is determined by the individual's back waist length measurement, and with few exceptions, will be correctly proportioned if the shirt is properly fitted in other areas. The shirt bottom fits easily overthe hips, conforming to the waistline curve without blousing to give a semi-fitted appearance. The bottom button of the shirt falls slightly below the natural waistline. The sleeve of the shirt extends to the bottom part of the wrist bone.

SKIRT: The skirt fits smoothly overthe hips so that it does not drape in folds. The waistband fits with one half inch of looseness on either side between the natural waistline and the waistband of the skirt. The center of the waistband is at the natural waistline. The bottom of the skirt falls between one inch above or two inches below the midpoint of the knee and is parallel to the ground.

SLACKS: The bottom of the slacks reaches the top of the instep in the front. A slight break in the crease is acceptable. The bottom of the slacks falls midway between the top of the shoe and the top of the heel on the standard oxford shoe. When wearing the optional pump, this distance may vary slightly depending on heel height. The side seams are centered and hang straight. The slacks have about two inches of looseness over the hips; they fit snugly at the waist. The center of the waistband is at the center of the waistline. The side pockets lie flat without bulging and the crotch fits with a slight looseness.

Proper use of this device depends on the user. There are four categories of soldiers and proper uniform wear depends on which you are: Male, Female, Officer, or Enlisted.

4) Where the "item" and "uniform" lines meet, is the page number that will describe the exact placement for that particular case.

GARRISON CAP

Unit crests (rank insignia for officers) will be worn centered from top to bottom on the left

panel, 1" back from the front of the cap.

The Airborne insignia, if authorized, ( must always face forward) will be centered on the left

panel for enlisted (in place of unit crest) and right panel for officers. It will be 1" back from the

front of the cap.

PATROL CAP (FORMERLY -SDU CAP")

Subdued insignia of grade will always be worn by enlisted. Officers will wear non-subdued insignia on the cap unless in a field environment. The insignia will be centered, top to bottom, left to right.

No other insignia is authorized.

ARMY BERET

• Headband is one inch above eyebrows and straight across the forehead. • Flash is centered over left eye. • Excess material is pulled down to the right side touching the ear, but not exceeding middle of ear. • A dip is formed behind the stiffener, and a fold is formed to the right front (to the right of the flash).

INSIGNIA:

• Officers and warrant officers wear non-subdued grade insignia on the flash. • Enlisted wear Distinctive Unit Insignia (or Regimental Distinctive Insignia in units without a Distinctive

Unit Insignia.) • Chaplains wear branch.

Note: The insignia is centered within the flash from top to bottom and right to left.

WHEN TO WEAR THE VARIOUS HEADGEAR

Soldiers wear the beret with utility and service (class A and B) uniforms in garrison environments only. Soldiers will not wear the beret in the field, training environments, work details, or when the commander determines that wear of the beret is impractical. Personnel wear the beret during deployments only when prescribed by the commander. Personnel being transferred from one organization to another may continue to wear the beret and flash of the former unit until reporting for duty at the new organization.

PATROL CAP (FORMERLY THE BOU CAP) :

The patrol cap (formerly called the BOU cap) is worn with the BOU in field environments and on deployments when the Kevlar helmet is not worn; on work details; or when the commander determines wear of the beret is impractical. Additionally, personnel in initial training categories who are not issued or who do not wear the black beret, wear the patrol cap with the BOU.

GARRISON CAP:

Soldiers in initial training categories who have not been issued or who do not wear the black beret will wear the garrison cap with Class A and B uniforms.

UNIT AWARDS

Unit award emblems with frames will be worn with the laurel leaves of the frame pointing upward. They will be worn in the order of precedence from the wearer's right to left in rows of not more than three per row, with no lateral space between emblems and with up to 1/8" space between rows.

Ribbons will be worn in the order of precedence frorn the wearer's

right to left in one or rnore rows either with no space between rows or

a 1/8" space between rows. No more than four ribbons will be worn in

anyone row. A second row will not be started unless the individual is

authorized to wear four or more ribbons. The determination of whether

three or four ribbons are worn in each row will be based on the size of

the coat and the position of the lapel. The first and second rows will

contain the same number of ribbons (three or four) before starting a

third row. The third and succeeding rows will contain the same or fewer

ribbons than the first two rows. The top row will be centered on the row

beneath, or aligned to the left, whichever presents the best appearance.

precedence. See pages 70 and 71 for information on ribbon devices.

(See page 43) Several different United Nations ribbons have

been approved to recognize service in various United Nations' missions.

The first award earned is the only one worn. Subsequent awards for

different missions are denoted by a bronze star.

For ribbons, medals, awards not covered by this guide, refer

to AR 600-8-22.

MARKSMANSHIP BADGES: Expert, Sharpshooter, and Marksman

A total of five combat and special skill badges may be worn atone time. This does not include special skill tabs. Up to three combat and special skills badges from Groups 1 to 3 may be worn one above the other (1/2" spacing), 114" above the ribbons or pocket flap, or in a similar location for uniforms without pockets. When no badges from Groups 1 to 3 are worn, a total of two special skill badges from Groups 4 and 5 may be worn one above the other (1 12" spacing), 1/4" above the ribbons or pocket flap, or in a similar location for uniforms without pockets. When badges from Groups 1 to 3 are worn with badges from Groups 4 and 5, the badges from Groups 4 and 5 will be worn side by side below the ribbons or on the pocket flap in order of Group precedence from the wearer's right to left. SEE PAGES 46-53 FOR EXAMPLES.

NOTE: In all cases where badges are worn below the ribbons; regulations state "1/8 inch below the top of the pocket" for men, (women don't have pockets on the green or dress uniforms) and "1/4 inch below the ribbons" for women. Since men wear ribbons 1/8 inch above the pocket, the relative position of badges below ribbons is actually the same for men and women, ie., 1/4 inch below ribbons. Pages 46 to 53 apply to all personnel. For females, placement of badges may be adjusted to conform to individual figure differences.

ITEM: SUBDUED PIN-ON/SEW-ON BADGES

PLACEMENT: No more than five subdued combat and special skill badges will be worn. Badges will be worn one above the other centered on the U.S. Army tape in order of group precedence. When five badges are worn , three are centered above the U.S. Army tape in a vertical line, and two are worn on the pocket flap centered from left to right, (1/8" below the pocket seam), with at least 1" between badges. When four badges are worn, three will be worn centered above the U.S. Army tape in a vertical line, and one will be worn centered from left to right on the pocket flap, (1/8" below the pocket seam), or in a similar location on uniforms without pockets. When three badges are worn, two will be wom centered above the U.S. Army tape in a vertical line, and one will be worn centered from left to right on the pocket flap, (1/8" below the pocket seam), or in a similar location on uniforms without pockets. When two badges are worn, both badges will be worn centered above the U.S. Army tape in a vertical line. If only ~ badge is worn, it will be worn centered above the U.S. Army tape.

The bottom of the badge will be worn approximately 114 inch above the U.S. Army tape, and 1/2 inch space between badges if more than one badge is worn. See figure to the right.

Men: Centered and 1/8 inch above the right pocket of the Army green,

white, and blue uniforms and the AG 415 shirt; or 1/4 inch above unit

awards or foreign badges, if wom. On the mess jackets, the regimental

crest is wom centered on the right lapel, 1/2 inch below the notch, with

the vertical axis of the crest perpendicular to the ground.

Females: Centered and 1/2 inch above the nameplate (right side) or

1/4 inch above unit awards or foreign badges, on the Army green

classic, white, and blue uniforms and the AG 415 shirt. On the blue and

new version of the white mess uniforms, the crest is wom centered on

the right lapel . On the black and old version of the white mess uniforms,

it will be wom centered on the right side (not on the lapels) between the

lapel and shoulder seam. On any mess uniform, the top of the crest is

aligned with the top row of miniature medals, with the vertical axis of the

crest perpendicular to the ground.

FOREIGN BADGES

Foreign badges may only be worn one at a time, and then only if worn

in conjunction with at least one U.S. medal or service ribbon, and only

on the green service and the blue and white dress uniform coats.

Men: 1/8 inch above the right pocket flap or 1/2 inch above any unit

awards.

Females: 1/2 inch above the nameplate or 1/2 inch above any unit

awards.

SEWN - ON ITEMS SERVICE STRIPES Green Uniform Coat: (Enlisted) Service stripes are centered on the outside bottom half of the left sleeve for enlisted personnel. The service stripe is placed at an angle of 45 degrees with the lower end toward the inside (front) seam of the sleeve and placed 4 inches from the bottom of the sleeve. Additional service stripes are added parallel to the first stripe with a 1/16 inch space between stripes. See Fig. A. Blue, White and Mess Uniforms: (Enlisted) Service stripes are centered from seam to seam on the outside bottom half of both sleeves with the first stripe sewn on an angle of 30 degrees, with the lower end inserted in the front inside seam, 1/4 inch above the cuff braid, and the upper end of the stripe inserted in the back seam of the sleeve on the Army blue, mess, and white mess uniforms and 3 inches above the bottom of the sleeve on the Army white dress uniform. Each additional stripe is spaced 1/8 inch above the first stripe. See Fig. B.

OVERSEAS SERVICE BARS Green Uniform Coat: (Officers and Enlisted) The overseas service bar is centered on the outside bottom half of the right sleeve. The lower edge of the bar will be placed 1/4 inch above the sleeve braid of the coat for officers (see Fig. D), and 4 inches above and parallel to the bottom of the sleeve for enlisted personnel (see Fig. C). Each additional bar is spaced 1/16 inch above and parallel to the first bar.

REVERSE FIELD PATCH ON BDU (AMERICAN FLAG) BOU: The reverse field patch (fiag) in red, white, and blue is sewn on the right sleeve, 1/2 inch below the shoulder seam. If a combat patch is also worn, the flag is sewn 1/8 inch below the combat patch. Subdued fiags are not authorized.

SPECIAL NOTE: When sew-ons are used instead ofpin-ons, dimensions

should be measured from the actual insignia, not the edge of the cloth.

SEWN - ON ITEMS

SHOULDER SLEEVE INSIGNIA (SSI)

Current organization: Nonsubdued 551 will be worn centered on the left sleeve 1/2 inch below the top of the shoulder seam on the coats of the Army green uniform for all personnel. When the Ranger, 5pecial Forces, or President's Hundred tab is worn, the tab will be placed 1/2 inch below the top of the shoulder seam. The 551 will be worn 1/4 inch below these tabs. Tabs that are an integral part of an 551 such as airborne or mountain, will be wom directly above the 551 with no space between insignia and tab. 5ubdued insignia is worn on SOU's, fatigues, flight suits, and the combat vehicle crewman uniform.

Former wartime service: Nonsubdued 551 is worn centered on the right sleeve 1/2 inch below the top of the shoulder seam on the Army green uniform coat for all personnel. 5ubdued insignia is worn on SOU's, and fatigues.

GRADE (RANK) SLEEVE INSIGNIA

Nonsubdued cloth insignia will be worn centered on each sleeve of the Army green, blue, and white uniform coats to include the blue and white mess jackets. It is centered between the shoulder seam and the elbow on all coats. When the shoulder sleeve insignia (551) will not allow the insignia of grade to be worn as stated, the insignia of grade will be placed 1/2 inch below the 551 on the left side of the coat and the same corresponding distance on the right side.

NEW ARMY COMBAT UNIFORM

1. Name/U.S. Anny tape will be worn directly over the slanted pockets and parallel to the floor (fastened via provided Velcro).

2. Up to Five skill badges (only pin-on subdued) may be worn on the ACU. All skill badges are worn on the left above the U.S. Army tape as follows:

ONE BADGE: Worn 118 inch above and centered on U.S. Anny tape.

TWO BADGES: Worn vertically, 1/8 inch above and centered on the U.S. Army tape, with 114 inch between badges.

THREE BADGES: Worn vertically, 118 inch above and centered on the U.S. Army tape, with 1/4 inch between badges. (shown right)

FOUR BADGES: Worn vertically and side by sidein stacks of two 118 inch above and centered on U.S. Army tape with 114 inch between badges vertically and 112 inch between badges horizontally.

FIVE BADGES: Same as above for four badges with the additional badge worn 1/4 inch above and centered on the top two badges.

3. Shoulder Sleeve Insignia/Unit Patch is centered on the Velcro already provided on the left sleeve of ACU. Up to 3 skill tabs (Ranger, Special Forces, Sapper, Presidents 100) may be worn centered on left pocket flap on Velcro provided.
