    Picture yoursel in a country like Panama or Honduras, where youmight be called upon to provide dental care to underprivilegedchildren and adults as part o a humanitarian mission. As part othe Army Health Care Team, you could travel to Army installationsthroughout the United States to examine Soldiers during eldexercises. You may have the opportunity to attend pro essionalcon erences and seminars as part o your training, at governmentexpense. You might even nd yoursel backpacking with colleagues

    or attending specialized Army training courses.

    In the process, youll learn new skills like teamwork and leadership.Youll sharpen the clinical skills you already possess.     YoUre a Dentist anD an oFFiCer.

    Your Army Reserve experience begins with the O cer Basic LeadersCourse (OBLC). In this two-week orientation, you and your colleagues

    will learn about the Army way o li e and experience thephysical and mental challenges youll ace as a member o theArmy Reserve Health Care Team.

    When you complete OBLC, youll be assigned to the ArmyReserve unit.

    During your Army Reserve training, you may work at an Army dentalclinic, medical center or community hospital. There you will treata diverse patient base o Soldiers, providing our nations servicemembers dentistry-access to care many or the rst time.

    Or, you could train in an Army eld exercise, attend a dentalcon erence or even participate in a humanitarian mission. But, nomatter how you spend your Army Reserve training, you will return toyour civilian practice with a new sense o pride and accomplishment.

    FinanCial inCentiVes For QUaliFieD Dentists.

    In addition to the income youll earn as an o cer in the Army DentalCorps, quali ed dentists may be eligible or one or more o the

    ollowing nancial incentive programs:

    sPeCialiZeD training assistanCe PrograM (straP) I youre currently enrolled in an accredited oral surgery residency,you may be eligible to receive a monthly stipend currently $1,992a month (adjusted each July). Your military obligation begins a teryou complete your residency. For each year o nancial assistance,two years service is required in a Reserve Troop Program Unit orthe Individual Mobilization Augmentee Program.

    sPeCial PaY I youre a general dentist, comprehensivedentist, oral surgeon or prosthodontist, you can earn a specialpay o $25,000 per year or three years a total o $75,000.HPB participants must agree to serve in an Army Reserve TroopProgram Unit or the Individual Mobilization Augmentee Programwhile receiving this special pay.

    healthCare ProFesionals loan rePaYMentPrograM (hPlr) For each year you serve, you can receive upto $20,000 a year toward your outstanding educational loans up to a maximum o $50,000 i youre a ully quali ed generaldentist, comprehensive dentist, oral surgeon or prosthodontist,and you agree to serve in an Army Reserve Troop Program Unit orthe Individual Mobilization Augmentee Program.

    Must be a U.S. citizen or be a permanent resident

    21 to 46 years of age (dentists 47 years of age or older may applyor an age waiver. Selection is made on a case-by-case basis)

    Graduate of an American Dental Association accredited dentalschool in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, District oColumbia or a territory o the United States

    Current, unrestricted license to practice dentistry in the UnitedStates, District o Columbia, Puerto Rico or a territory o theUnited States

    Meet the prescribed medical and moral standards for appointmentas a commissioned o cer

    Favorable security investigation completed

    Initial commitment of eight years. Prior service applicants willhave their military obligation determined on an individual basis.

    Train part-time and serve when needed.

    Attend a two-week Of cer Basic Leaders Course (one-timeorientation).

Onceyour Recruiter has met with you and determined your eligibility, heor she will schedule a routine physical and an interview with anArmy Medical Department (AMEDD) O cer. Your application packetis then orwarded to an AMEDD Review Board. I selected, youo cially accept the o er by taking an oath o o ce and acceptinga commission in the Army Reserve. The entire process, rom the

    rst meeting with your Recruiter to the commissioning ceremony,usually takes about three months.
