From the input video signal a, the character signal extract-ing section 1 extracts character signals superimposed on thevertical blanking intervals 14H, 15H, 16H, and 21H. Th edata block linking section2 picks up data blocks out of thecharacter signals extracted at the character signal extractingsection 1, and thereafter links the data and classifies theminto data groups. Th e data type deciding section3 decideswhether the data groups classified by the d ata block linkingsection 2 are program data, page data, or index data, acco rding to data group identification codes. Thereafter, thecharacter-program data decoder section4 accumulates char-acter-program data derived from the data type decidingsection 3 in the buffer memory section5, while it extractscharacter-program data pertaining to a program numberneeding presentation from the character-program data accu-mulated in the buffer memory section5. According to thetype of the character-program data, character signals aredecoded as shown in FIG. 8, and the resulting character1grap hic screen information is written into the video memo rysection 7 through the display control section6. Th e displaycontrol section 6 sequentially reads the characterlgraphicscreen information written into the video memory section7,yielding an output of display signal b. Further, if theprogram data needing presentation has any added soundinformation, the character-program da ta decoder section4decodes the added sound information, and transmits sound-generation data to the sound generator section8, where thesound generator section8 produces a sound signal based onthe sound-generation data.

In the teletext, data transmission is carried out in theabove-described transmission procedure. On the side ofteletext receiving equipment, character and graphic infor-mation coded according to the transmission procedure aredeco ded, offering the services that still images such as new sand weather forecasts are displayed on television. Morerecently, with a view to making the teletext further wide-spread, new services are under discussion in which televi-sion-program table information (program title, programbroadcasting date, program broadcasting time, etc.) areencoded, transmitted as data unit data by expanding thetransmission procedure while compatibility with the con-ventional teletext is maintained (i.e. by defining new param -eters), so as to allow the teletext to be utilized for videorecording reservation by image recordinglreproducing appa-ratus such as VTRs. However, the conventional teletextreceiving equipment cannot afford such expansion of thetransmission procedure as it stands, prohibiting their usersfrom enjoying the new services.

Meanwhile, since the operation for recording reservationwith the current VTRs is so complicated and difficult tounderstand that beginners and those unfamiliar to video1audio appliances cannot manage it. This accounts for thestrong desire that this operation for recording reservation bemade easier.

Th e present invention, in view of the foregoing problem s,has developed a transmission system in which television-program table information is defined on transmission, andfurther provides a receiving apparatus in which the televi-sion-program table information is recognized and processedon the receiver side so that the recording reservation in theimage recordinglreproducing apparatus can be simplified

and that change in the time of recording reserved programscan be treated.

The receiver constructed as described above is belowdescribed with regard to its operation, referring to FIG. 9.

First, the character signal extracting section1 extractscharacter signals superimposed on 14H, 15H, 16 H, and 21Hfrom the input video signal a. The decoder section 4 accu-mulates the character signals extracted at the charactersignal extracting section 1 n the buffer memory section5

while it extracts program data pertaining to a programnumber needing presentation from the character signalsaccumulated in the buffer m emory section 5, and it furtherperforms the decoding of character signals such as shown inFIG. 8 , writing characterlgraphic screen information into thevideo memory section 7 through the display control section6. The display control section 6 sequentially reads thecharacterlgraphic screen information written into the videomemory section 7, yielding an output of display signal b.The decoder section 4 further decodes added sound infor-mation, if there is any added sound information in theprogram data needing presentation, thereafter transmittingsound-generation data to the sound generator section8. Thesound generator section 8 yields an output based on thesound-generation data.

The detection of television-program table programs iscarried out by the first program recognition means 9. Therecognition of television-program table programs is carriedout by the data-unit parameters as shown in FIG. 7. Thedata-unit parameters representing television-program tableprograms are hexadecimal data, which may be any I-bytedata except 20,24,28,2 C,30,31,32,34,35,38,39,3B, C,3D, 3E, and 3F. An example of the structure of the televi-sion-program table program data unit is shown in FIG. 10.Out of the television-program table data unit recognized andextracted by the first program recognition means9, the firstchannel information processing means 11 reads channelinformation from byte-6 to byte-ll data of the television-

program table data unit. The first program update recogniz-ing and processing means 10 reads program version datafrom byte 5 of the television-program table data unit. Thefirst date information processing means 1 2 reads monthinformation from byte 1 2 and date information from b yte13

of the television-program table data unit. The first timeinformation processing means13 reads start hour informa-tion from byte 14 and start minute information from byte15

of the television-program table data unit. By the MSB , b8 ofbyte 1 4, it is decided w hether or not there exists anyterminate time information. It also reads terminate hourinformation from byte 1 6 and terminate minute informationfrom byte 17. When terminate time information is omitted, the da ta that follow are shifted by2 bytes. The first program

code information processing m eans 1 4 reads program codeinformation from byte 1 8 of the television-program ta bledata unit. The first program title information processingmeans 1 5 reads title information by the number of bytesrepresenting title data-length data of byte 1 9 of the televi-sion-program table data unit. Similarly, it reads the second

and following television-program table information data. The pieces of information read by the first program updaterecognizing and processing means 1 0, the first channelinformation processing means 11, the first date informationprocessing means 12, the first time information processingmea ns 1 3, and the first title information processing me ans 1 5are ea ch displayed on to the CRT screen through the displaymeans 16. The cursor display means 1 7 displays a cursorrepresenting a television program to be selected on the CR Tscreen, while the cursor moving means 1 8 moves the posi-tion of the cursor outputted by the cursor display means 17,thereby allowing a desired television prog ram to b e selectedby the selection means 1 9. The selected television-programtable information are stored in series in the first storagemeans 20. If any content of the television-program tableinformation stored in the first storage means 2 0 are updated,a comparison is made between the content information ofthe relevant program and the contents of the television-program table information stored in the first storage means20 through the first program update recognizing and pro-cessing means 10, where if there is any change in thecontents, the contents of the television-program table infor-mation stored in the first storage means 20 is rewritten intonew data. The contents of the television-program tableinformation stored in the first storage means 20 are at alltimes compared w ith date and time data of the timer means2 1 by the comparator means 22. Then, out of the television-program table information stored in the storage means 20,when the date and time data obtained by the first dateinformation processing means 12 and the start time dataobtained by the first time information processing means 13coincide with each other, the start instruction means 23instructs the image recordinglreproducing apparatus 25 tostart the video recording. Similarly, as for the instruction fo rtermination of the video recording, the contents of thetelevision-program table information store d in the first stor-age m eans 20 are at all times compared with date and timeda ta of the timer means 21, followed by the processing. Thatis, among the television-program table information stored inthe first storage means 20, when the date and time dataobtained by the first date information processing means 1 2and the terminate time data obtained by the first timeinformation processing means 1 3 coincide with each other, the termination instruction means 24 instructs the imagerecordinglreproducing apparatus25 to terminate the video-recording operation.

As described above, according to the present embodi-ment, there are newly provided data-unit parameters fortelevision-program table information by teletext in the cod-ing transmission system, and in this arrangement program-content update information, channel information, date infor-mation, time information, program code informa tion, titleinformation, and the like of the television-program tableinformation is transmitted as data-unit data. As a result, onthe reception side, television-program table information canbe automatically detected and displayed on a display unit;and a television program displayed on the screen can besimply reserved for video recording on an ima ge recording1reproducing apparatus only by selecting a cursor; and infor-mation of teletext can be effectively utilized i n the receiverequipment. program title data is displayed on the screen as character-program data, allowing to reduce the amount of data to betransmitted.

The transmission system of a sixth embodiment of thepresent invention is now described with reference to FIG.

16, FIG. 17, and FIG. 20.FIG. 20 shows the structure of the data unit in the sixth

embodim ent of the invention a nd its transmission procedure. As understood from FIG. 20, the sixth embodiment incontrast to the structure of the data unit in the fourthembodiment is so arranged that it involves added datalengths, added data control, and added data that is therelevant data content. The added data lengths represent theprogram broadcasting start time, program broadcasting ter-minate time, program-classification identification index, program title data length, and data lengths of added dataother than program title in the television program corre-sponding to the television-program identification number. The number of bytes of the added data to be transmitted

succeeding to the added data lengths is transmitted by thesucceeding byte in binary value. The added data control, which represents the typ e of the added data of the televisionprogram corresponding to the television-program identifi-cation number and which represents by each bit whether itsadded data is present or not, is transmitted by the bytesucceeding to the added data lengths. Examp les of the addeddata include data which gives information on programs inseries when one television program is broadcasted in seriesover a plurality of broadcasting channels.

With the above-described arrangement, in addition totelevision-program identification number, program broad-casting start time, program broadcasting terminate time,program-classification identification index, program titledata length, program title, program title display start posi-tion, and program title display terminate position, it ispossible to further provide added data lengths representingdata lengths of television-program table information to beadded other than the above-described data, added datacontrol representing the type of the data to be added unlessthe added da ta length is0 (i.e. when there is any television-program information to be added), and added da ta that is thecontent of the relevant data, to the da ta unit section for eachtelevision-program number, and transmit them. As a result,it is made feasible to make various types of added data, which may b e possible in the future, expandable while thecompatibility with the conventional teletext receiver equip-ment is maintained.

FIG. 21 shows a seventh embodiment of the presentinvention.

With the arrangem ent of the existing teletext transmissionsystem and its receiver a s shown in F IG.1, to select a relatedteletext program or pag e, it is necessary to d esignate and callthe menu screen and further designate program number andpage number while viewing the m enu screen. This involvesa problem that the character programs accumulated in thememory are limited to those of program numbers and pagenumbers that are at random or that have previously beendesignated.

To solve this problem, the seventh embodiment com-prises: program type information recognition means f o ~

providing a limitation on program type information andrecognizing that a relevant data unit is of program typeinformation from a received data-unit parameter; extractionmeans for extracting magazine number, program number, page number, program type, and the like from a data-unitdata detected by the program type information recognition

10 played acco rding to request for presentation of programsrelated to the character program or page selected and dis-played.

With the above-described arrangement, when programtype information of character broadcasting programs such as

15 news, we ather, and stock market are transmitted, it is pos-sible to manage character broadcasting programs for eachprogram type by making use of received program typeinformation, accumulates with priority character programsor pages of related program types, and search and present

20 character programs or pages of related program types with-out designating program numbers.

Now the seventh embodiment is described in more detailwith reference to FIG. 21 and FIG. 22.

The accumulation control means4 con-trols the buffer mem ory section5 so that it accumulates withpriority character programs of program numbers or pagenumbers identical or related to the program informationdetccted by the program type detection means43 . Thescarch and presentation means45 searches character pro-grams or pages identical or related to the program typedetected by thc program type detection means43 of thecharacter program or page selected and displayed accordingto request for presentation of programs related to the char-acter program or page s elected and displayed. Thus , relevantcharacter-program data is delivered from the buffer memo rysection 5 to thc decoder section 4, so that it is presentedthrough the display control section6.

As described above, according to the present embodi-ment, there are newly provided data-unit parameters forprogram typc information by teletext in the coding trans-mission system, wherein magazine number, program num-ber, page num ber, program typc, and the like of the programtype information are transmitted as data-unit data. As aresult, on thc reception side, it is possible to managecharacter broadcasting programs for each program type bymaking use of the received program type information, sothat character programs or pages of related program typesare accumulated in the memory with priority or that char-acter programs or pages of related program types can besearched and presented without designating program num-bcrs.

Now an eighth embodiment of the present invention isdescribed. This embodiment provides a receiver in whichtime information such as year information, month informa-tion, day information, hour information, minute informatio n,and second information are defined when in transmission,
