Reflections from Fr. David This Sunday we will have members of the Notre Dame Parish family joining with thousands of others in the March for Life in Chicago. The event is the local version of the national annual March for Life in Washington, D. C. There are other similar gatherings around our country. As you know, the March(es) for Life are held as a faithful and public witness against the value systems (moral and legal) that have allowed for the killing of children in the womb through elective abortions. Since the United States Supreme Court decision in the case of Roe v. Wade in 1973, over 50 million abortions have been performed in our nation alone. Our faith’s moral tradition demands that we advocate not only on behalf of unborn children but also of their mothers. As a male, I cannot begin to imagine what pressures are on the heart and mind of a woman who finds herself in the midst of a crisis pregnancy. However, as a human being, it is incumbent upon me and all other people to remind each other that a crisis cannot really be a sufficient reason to end the life of another human being...whatever rationale might be used to justify that deadly choice. As Christians, we are obliged to be supportive both to children in the womb and to their mothers who either did not expect or do not want to be a parent to that child. We are blessed that in our part of the Chicago Metropolitan area, there are several faith-based agencies that provide outstanding help and meaningful resources to women in the midst of a crisis pregnancy. In the years after the Pro-Life movement in the U.S. Catholic community began to make a difference on the national conversation about abortion, the late Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, developed a teaching rooted in the Catholic doctrine of the sacredness of all life. He described his approach as a “Seamless Garment” understanding of the Church’s teaching. By this he meant that the sacredness of life cannot be narrowly focused only on life of children in the womb but also to the life threatening situations that face many people after they are born: poverty, violence, war, prejudice, the death penalty, euthanasia, and many others. There were many in the Pro-Life movement in the Church that accused the late Cardinal for diluting the Church’s teaching by equating the evil sin of abortion with other social ills and thereby diminishing the ability of the Church to focus on the urgent need to stop abortions. The debate, or disagreement, between those two perspectives continues into our day. I want to suggest that, rather than thinking we must choose between those two perspectives, we should fully embrace both...the truly Catholic approach is almost

always a “both/and” rather than an “either/or” understanding...our faith requires that we “walk and chew gum at the same time!” What do I mean by that? Years ago, in the wake of the Roe v. Wade decision, many opponents of abortion publicly worried that the legalization of abortion would lead to a proverbial “slippery slope” that would open the door to many other ways in which society would enact policies that would undermine the dignity and sacredness of human life and the human person. They were right to worry...and their fears were well founded! All we have to do is look around the nation and world today and behold how much the great, humanizing, life-affirming values of our faith are being eroded, ignored and denounced. Within the Catholic community, the catechesis (teaching about the faith) to both kids and adults has been so ineffective over the last several generations that many Catholics are unaware of the beauty, depth and truth of the Church’s understanding of life and how to live. And how do we bring the human race back from the brink when global morality in general and personal morality for so many has taken an ugly, deadly, dehumanizing turn?

Our Lord Jesus Christ consistently taught that violence (physical, verbal, emotional, spiritual) between people and communities must cease...it was a violation of the prohibition against

killing—the Fifth Commandment of the Decalogue. The Savior came not only to save us and remind us that we are loved by God...he came to show us how the beloved People of God are meant to live. That is, Jesus not only upheld the imperative to honor the sacredness and dignity of life. Jesus also reminded us of the divine command—and the joyful opportunity we have—for sacred living!! These two go together!!! The thinking and values that lead to abortion cannot be legislated away. Holy living cannot be legally enforced. It requires, as the Lord indicates, conversion and repentance. In the Gospel this is described as a change in the way of thinking, a change of attitude, a transformation of assumptions, a renewal of the mind and heart. In one way or another, we are all participants in what Pope St. John Paul II described as “the culture of death”. It takes prayer, reflection and a radical, humble honesty to recognize this within ourselves and to seek the holy ways of God to renew our minds and hearts and, thereby, let the Lord firmly plant us on the path of sacred living. If you cannot join the March in Chicago today, please pray for those who can. And let’s walk with the Lord and one another in ways of sacred living our holy and sacred life!!

It’s not just that life is sacred...life must be

lived sacredly!

Parish Outreach

1. Canned meats: Think beyond tuna & soup. Consider canned beef, canned ham, canned chicken, canned salmon. Or hearty ready-to-go meals like beef stew and chili with meat.

2. Canned vegetables: Everyone donates green beans. Kids all love corn. Also, give potatoes, carrots, spinach, peas or any other veggies your family likes.

3. Canned fruit: Not only pineapple. This is the most commonly donated fruit. Any other fruit, particularly those in fruit juice without extra sugar, would be great. Dried fruit works too (raisins, etc.)

4. Boxed meals THAT REQUIRE ONLY WATER. Hamburger Helper isn’t helpful if you don’t have hamburger.

5. Low-sugar cereal like plain Cheerios 6. Peanut butter…and, of course, jelly 7. Instant oatmeal, especially now that the cold weather is with us 8. Canned pastas 9. Pasta (boxes are easier to store), pasta sauce 10. Biscuit or baking mixes (again that only require water) 11. Snack items for kids to take to school: juice boxes, applesauce containers,

granola bars 12. Spices like cinnamon, oregano, basil, salt, pepper 13. Nutrition drinks (Ensure, Boost, etc) 14. Chocolate and Coffee: not a necessity but just a pick-me-up and favorite.

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING

Below is a list of resources regarding Natural Family Planning (NFP) for those interested in learning more about the concept. The first bullet is a definition followed by numerous websites that provide more in-depth infor-mation. There are several different methods of NFP. You can find face-to-face classes or online classes. The cost of the classes varies.

• Definition of Natural Family Planning: is the general title for the scientific, natural and moral methods of family planning that can help married couples either achieve or postpone pregnancies. NFP methods are based on the observation of the naturally occurring signs and symptoms of the fertile and infertile phases of a woman's menstrual cycle. No drugs, devices, or surgical procedures are used to avoid pregnancy. Since the methods of NFP respect the love-giving (unitive) and life-giving (procreative) nature of the conjugal act, they support God's design for married love! (United States Conference of Catho-lic Bishops, 2018)

• For more information on NFP see the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website: http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/marriage-and-family/natural-family-planning/what-is-nfp/index.cfm

• Joliet Diocese offers many resources for couples wanting more information regarding NFP. The Dio-cese offers face to face classes at various locations throughout the diocese. Please see the Diocese web-site for more information. The Joliet Diocese teaches the Billing Method of Ovulation which is one method used for NFP. https://www.dioceseofjoliet.org/familyministry/subsectioncontent.php?secid=7&subsecid=8

• There are several NFP methods available to couples. One is the Billings Method. The Billings method offer online classes that maybe more convenient than face to face classes. For more information see website for Billings: https://billings.life/en/what-is-the-billings-ovulation-method/the-4-simple-rules.html

• Another method of NFP is the Crieghton Method. For more information on this method see the website for Crieghton Method: https://www.creightonmodel.com/

• Marquette University has information on NFP, issues during breastfeeding, post-partum concerns. To access Marquette University website see the following: https://nfp.marquette.edu/sc_return_fertil_after_birth.php

• The Couple to Couple League provides information on NFP and online classes. For more information visit: https://nfp.marquette.edu/sc_return_fertil_after_birth.php

March for Life TODAY

“Whatsoever you do to the Least of my Brothers, that you do unto Me" Most of us probably sang these words to this familiar tune. Most of us believe it is noble to strive to reach and touch the Last, the Least and the Lost. Much of modern society tells us in no uncertain terms that the unborn child is the Least of Us. We are told that this child is a clump of cells, similar to a tumor, lacking any human dignity. Please close your eyes and pause to ask yourself if Christ considers the unborn child His Child. Do you feel compelled to help the Greatest of the Least?

We welcome you to join Notre Dame Right to Life Committee. Please contact Mimsie O’Hara; [email protected]

Parishioners are invited to join thousands at the March for Life Chicago 2019, at the Federal Plaza, 50 W. Adams, as we come together from across Chicago, the Midwest and the U.S. to defend, protect and celebrate LIFE! A bus is leaving Notre Dame Church at 12:30pm and will return after the event. (Free will offering accepted to offset the cost of the bus). Check at the Information Desk to see if there are any seats still available!

Pray for our loved ones in the service

You’re invited to explore! Is there more to life than this? Is there a God?

Why am I here? Where am I going? No question is out of bounds.

No question is considered hostile or too simple to be considered.

Alpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in an open, informal, friendly environment. The Alpha Course meets once a week for 11 weeks, with each week focusing on a different question. Each Alpha session follows the same format; we begin with a meal, followed by a video and table discussion. Everyone and every viewpoint is welcome- no back-ground knowledge of (or belief in) Christianity is as-sumed. At Alpha there is no pressure, no follow-up, and no charge. Sacraments for the Dying

When Catholics are nearing death, the Church invites these persons to receive the sacraments to give them spiritual strength and comfort as they prepare for their journey home to God. These sacraments include Confession, Anointing and the reception of Holy Communion (often called viaticum, literally “food for the journey”). These sacraments are most fruitful for the person if they’re conscious, alert and able to participate in the rites.

Therefore, we encourage you to contact the office to have these sacraments administered early enough so that your loved one will be able to be fully engaged in the celebra-tion. Although a priest wants to be present to minister to the dying, there are times when he may not be available on short notice. So whenever feasible, please contact the office at least a couple of days before the matter becomes urgent.

Please note that the Anointing of the Sick is not only for the dying, but also for those with a serious illness or facing major surgery. We can often anoint someone preparing for surgery after a daily or Sunday Mass, if you just ask in advance.

Adoration of Our Lord

“Jesus concealed in the Host is every-thing to me. From the tabernacle I draw

strength, power, courage and light. Here, I seek consolation in time of anguish.”

(St. Faustina, Diary 1037)

He is here for us too, so that we may draw strength, power, courage light and consolation. Can we not give one hour a week to be with Him during Eucharistic Adoration? There is always a need for faithful adorers. For more information, contact Nena Lavoie, [email protected].
