INTRODUCTION

� “URUP”, Ultra Rapid Under Pass, An innovative shield tunneling technology.

� URUP tunneling, developed by Obayashi in Japan, it is an innovative shaft-less shield technology.

� This is the world’s first tunneling technology that uses a shield machine to tunnel underground through the entire length of tunnel from entrance to exit.

� It enables rapid construction of road and railway underpasses by using Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) which launches and arrives at ground level.

� The project involves circular TBM with diameters ranging from 2.1m up to 13.6m.

� The finest paradigm for this technology used is in “Central Circular Shinagawa Route Oi Area Tunnel Construction Project” in Japan.

Objectives� To the need for tunnel construction in congested areas, challenging ground

conditions and stringent physical and environmental constraints.

� This method eliminates the need for shafts so that it occupies less requirement of land and makes fast underpass.

� To get result in significant cost savings, reduced construction time and reduced environmental impact.

Advantages� The URUP method shortens the construction period by roughly 2/3rd and

significantly in cost also.

� It substantially alleviates traffic congestion associated with the construction work.

� The URUP method is environmental friendly by reduction in CO2 level and minimizes the noise and vibrations by equipment that arises from the works.
