• The urinary system – also known as the renal system – produces, stores and eliminates urine, the fluid waste excreted by the kidneys. The urinary system includes two kidneys, two ureters, the bladder, two sphincter muscles and the urethra.

Signs and symptoms of urinary tract infections

• In most of the cases, individuals affected by UTI remain asymptomatic, while in others it may cause variable symptoms.The typical symptoms of UTIs are frequent, urgent and/or painful urination that may be associated with lower abdominal pain. These symptoms may appear abruptly in an otherwise healthy individual.

• Abdominal pain is a discomfort or pain felt anywhere in the abdomen between the chest and pelvis. The abdominal pain is commonly categorized as acute or chronic based on the duration or occurrence of the pain. Short occurring pain is termed as acute while pain that has been persisting for a long duration of time is referred to as chronic pain.1

Causes of abdominal pain

• Identifying or pointing at a particular factor as the causative factor is impossible in case of abdominal pain. It may arise due to a wide variety of reasons. It can however be said that abdominal pain commonly indicates the involvement of any of the organs present in or near by to the abdominal region. Therefore any abnormality in the organs of digestion (such as the stomach, liver, intestine, pancreas, gall bladder, etc), appendix, kidneys or the spleen can result in abdominal pain.

Some of the common conditions that can result in abdominal pain include:

• Appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix)• Blockage or obstruction of the bowels or the intestine• Gall bladder disorders• Constipation• Abnormalities of the aorta (major blood vessel from the heart)• Abnormalities of the small intestine• Abnormalities of the large intestine• Food allergy, poisoning• Gastritis• Kidney stones or other kidney abnormalities• Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)• Tumors or cancers in the abdominal region• Stomach ulcers• Urinary tract infections• Gynecological conditions such as menstrual cramps, or other disorders
