Framing the Challenge •  Modern Science

•  Data and computing intensive •  Integrative, multi-scale, multi-disciplinary

•  INSPIRE a key building block of interoperability in Europe §  Cross-border e-services §  Digital Agenda for sustainable growth

•  Sea of people = Sea of data §  By 2050, 6.2 bn people in urban areas (70%

of humanity) §  Citizens contributing observations and

perceptions of change §  Millions of sensors = dynamic data flows

•  Quality of Life not just GDP §  New indicators of Qol based on a range of

dimensions §  Opportunity to complement administrative

and survey data with citizen data

•  Aims at harnessing novel collaborative research paradigms in citizen-science to identify and measure new quality of life (QoL) indicators in the urban environment. "

•  Complements the existing knowledge on urban QoL conditions, by combining quantitative and qualitative information from authoritative and crowd-sourced data Leverages the trends of service digitalization (e.g., mobile apps, social networks, gamification) in order to engage citizens and contribute to main policy debates."

•  Aligns to DG CNECT Digital Science Vision for H 2020 (source: Morten Møller DG CNECT, 5/9/13)"

•  Other potential interested DGs:"§  ESTAT"§  REGIO"§  SANCO"§  ENV"§  …"

•  Other stakeholders"§  Public administrations "§  Networks of cities"§  National Statistical Institutes""

UrbanQool

New research methods, e-infrastructures, big data

Open access to research results (publications & data) and processes

Open research collaborations (open science), crowdsourcing

Citizen engagement in research (citizen science) and scientific debate

More efficient science: shared resources, dynamic collaborations, democratization of research

Better science: Transparent and replicable research

New science: New disciplines, new research topics

Higher impact science: relevance, accessibility and impact to society and industry

UrbanQool "(potential areas of

activity)"

"EFFICIENT MOBILITY: Change from fixed to flexible mobility transit patterns in order to allow personalization of travel plans in a more sustainable way. Possible indicators on commuting to study and work by mode of transport "

"

"CROSS-CUTTING THEME: METHODS FOR CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT: test alternative methods for citizen engagement by age-group (e.g. gaming) in sustainability projects as well as public participation, and governance."

"PERCEPTION OF THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT: measures and feedback on air quality , street noise level, litter, safety. and other suitable

indicators of local environment. "

ACCESS TO SERVICES: time spent to access basic services provided by public administration (e.g. planning permits, cadastral registry, etc.)"

The concept of Quality of life deserves

individualization, increased

geographical resolution and denser

timescale.!

Urban data services are reshaped as user-friendly “apps”, very often supported by

social network features. "

Environmental sensors are

increasingly being embedded in

smartphones and popular electronics."

Pervasive internet access is an asset for service digitalization."

UrbanQool - In summary !•  UrbanQool is expected to build a user-friendly feedback platform for

the evaluation of individual QoL in urban areas."•  The infrastructure is envisioned to engage citizens’ participation by

exploiting behavioral and socio-economic attributes of modern urban societies. "

•  Engaging citizens’ participation towards sustainable project activity is an asset for the interoperability of several DGs, public and private parties."

•  The research activity will span 3 years. Project milestones are: "
