Families should focus less on the financial-woes and think about the memories they will make on the trip. With careful planning, you can find a ideal trip that is a perfect match for your budget.

With summer fast approaching, there is one thing that’s on everyone’s minds – family vacations. However, it’s not all fun and games. Along with the excitement of going on holidays together comes the inevitable worry about saving enough money for the trip. With a well-planned out budget and plan, saving up won’t be as gruesome as it may seem.

You can save money by making small changes in the way you spend. Making careful choices when purchasing groceries and other home-related products will not only save you money. It can also make accomplishing chores around the house more efficient.

Here are a few tips on how you can easily save around the house and get you started saving up for that next family vacation:

Plan Your Purchases Smart shopping is an important part of the equation and that means being prepared. Do most of your decision making at home to reduce impulse purchases and help you stick to your budget.

Comparison Shop Buy products that stretch your dollar. Many brand name products now offer value-priced packages and still provide the quality you know and trust. For instance, you might need four to five sheets of lower-priced paper towel to get the same quality that one sheet of the higher quality brand provides. You’ll be surprised to know that many brand name products give you more bang for your buck.

Use Coupons Take advantage of coupons when you’re grocery shopping. Utilize websites such as savingmadesimple.ca which offers great bargains and coupons on the products you’re already using. Look through your flyers to find great deals from the stores you frequently shop at. Sign up for newsletters to have them delivered to your inbox weekly.

Transfer Money to Your “Travel Fund” The savings you made from using coupons or bargain shopping should be put into your “travel fund” instead of being put back into your wallet. This will keep you on track so you are continually saving for your upcoming family vacation. •

Vacation Planning: Save Up to Live It UpSaving money isn’t rocket science; it’s about discipline and knowing how to make your money work for you. Vacation planning should be fun and should not feel like a burden. If you know where and how to save, you’ll realize that saving for a family vacation is much easier than you had imagined.

The wrong foods will give you “false energy”, which quickly crashes and leaves you further depleted. Refined and sugar-laced foods will also hinder your natural weight loss and rob your body of energy providing nutrients like B vitamins. There are no magic foods that will substitute a good night of sleep, however, with the right kinds of foods you can increase sustainable energy levels and help your body recover.

Nuts and Seeds Almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and pecans are the perfect nutrient dense go-to snack for new mothers. They provide essential nutrients like magnesium to help combat stress and increase calcium absorption.

Nourishing polyunsaturated fats support blood sugar balance for healthy weight and cognitive function. Nuts and seeds also provide good sources of vitamins A and E, needed to help repair damaged capillary walls (hemorrhoids) and skin (stretch marks). Choose raw nuts and seeds instead of salted and roasted varieties. You can make a trail mix by combining a few different types of nuts and seeds. Make your own nut milk or use nut and seed butter as a dip for veggies; fruit or, as a spread on gluten-free toast.

Avocados This superfood is loaded with B vitamins, which are essential for carbohydrate metabolism and energy production. Avocados also provide B vitamins which are crucial for helping your body adapt to stress and balance your mood. Half an avocado has 6 grams of fibre and 2 grams of protein, making it a great for blood sugar regulation and healthy weight loss. Eat it on its own with a sprinkle of sea salt and lemon, spread it on toast or put it into your smoothie for a creamy texture.

Hemp Seeds This easily-digestible plant protein not only helps build and repair tissues, like muscles, bones and skin, but also helps to keep you full for longer. Protein is also used to produce enzymes that digest food and activate your metabolism, helping you reach and maintain your ideal weight. Hemp seeds are a great source of omega-3 and omega-6 (essential fatty acids) and provide an ideal balance between the two. Essential fatty acids are important for

balanced mood, reduce inflammation and to increase satiety, so you are not left craving sweets and refined carbohydrates during times of stress and fatigue.

This superfood contains chlorophyll, vitamin E and B’s, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and calcium, all nutrients involved in energy metabolism. Hemp products include: shelled hemp seeds, hemp protein powder, hemp seed butter and hemp milk (choose unsweetened hemp milk).

Coconut Butter and Oil The medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) in coconut oil provide energy and also fight pathogens in the digestive tract that contribute to fatigue. MCFAs are sent directly to your liver, where they are immediately converted into energy rather than being stored as fat. Coconut oil and butter helps to prevent low blood sugar, supports thyroid function and can help stimulate your body’s metabolism, leading to weight loss.

MCFAs are easily digestible, thus putting less strain on your digestive system and increasing energy levels. You can use coconut oil for cooking and baking, and coconut butter as a spread or in smoothies.

Eggs Keep your refrigerator stocked up with this high-quality superfood. All the B vitamins, which are needed for energy production, are found in eggs, including choline. Choline is important for healthy cognitive function. Choose organic pasture-raised eggs, which are higher in beneficial nutrients, including omega 3 fatty acids to support brain and nerve function.

Majority of the beneficial nutrients are found in the yolk, so make sure to eat the whole egg. Eggs are best consumed boiled or poached so their delicate nutrients and oils remain intact.

Dried Fruits Whenever you are craving a quick snack, remember apricots, dates, prunes and figs are high in fibre, vitamin A and C, potassium, iron and calcium. These are all nutrients your body needs for stable energy levels and for a healthy digestion. Dried apricots also contain phytoestrogens that help to balance the

Nourishment for New Moms: Stock Up on SuperfoodsAs a new mom, you need extra nourishment to keep up with your enhanced schedule and demands. Lack of sleep and physical stresses of having a baby can leave anyone drained and reaching for quick fix stimulants like coffee and sugar.

hormones involved in lactation and the amino acid tryptophan, which naturally boosts prolactin levels to ensure adequate milk flow.

Tryptophan is also used to synthesize serotonin (feel-good hormone) in the brain and induce the feeling of satiety, which in turn leads to fewer cravings. Look for sulfur-free unsweetened varieties of dried fruits and add them to porridge, trail mixes, and even smoothies.

Quinoa This superfood is fast-becoming a stable pantry item because of its many benefits. Quinoa is a gluten-free pseudo grain that is high in complete protein, iron, and calcium, magnesium and a mix of B vitamins. The combination of high protein and high fibre makes this grain a superstar for balancing blood sugar levels and providing sustainable slow released energy. You can use quinoa to make salads, add it to soups and stews and baked goods, or make a quick porridge from quinoa flakes.

Dark Leafy Greens New moms can really benefit from eating turnip greens, chard, spinach, kale, and collard greens. These greens provide great sources of calcium, iron, vitamin K, A, and folate. Folate (or folic acid) is particularly important for women who are breastfeeding.

Dark leafy green vegetables contain high amounts of chlorophyll, which helps to rebuild and replenish our red blood cells, boosting our energy levels. Chlorophyll is beneficial for improved digestion and absorption of nutrients, which further increases our energy levels. Greens can be eaten raw in salads, smoothies and wraps, but also cooked in soups, stews or lightly sautéed and steamed.

Nutritional requirements for breastfeeding mothers are much the same as during pregnancy, with even higher requirements for many nutrients. Breastfeeding mothers need more calories (200-500 calories) and nutrients – including protein, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iodine, iron, as well as vitamins A, E and C.

The award-winning bilingual children’s musician and educator, connects with kids through high-energy, interactive and educational music in English and French. He is also the star of Will’s Jams, a fun and educational video series for kids featuring his popular hits which airs on Kids’ CBC Television weekday mornings.

Will first discovered his talent for writing children’s music while completing his Bachelor of Education at the University of British Columbia. After releasing his first CD in 2005, “Let’s All Dance,” and receiving great reviews from kids, parents, teachers and event organizers, Will knew he had found his calling.

Since then, the talented entertainer has performed more than 900 shows at major festivals, schools and theatres across Canada. He released eight albums of original music (four in English and

four in French) and one DVD, which have garnered international recognition.

Urbanbaby & Toddler Magazine recently had a chance to talk with Stroet about music, kids and being a Dad!

UBT: How do you balance music, touring and family life? WS: The biggest challenge is finding the time to do everything. I am lucky that my wife, Kim, is my manager. So we basically run the company together; we are equal partners in the company and we are equal partners in life too. When I am away on tour, Kim is home to pick up the slack on the homefront. Then when I am back home, I help out and do more of the cooking.

I am lucky because when I am home, I get to do things other dads don’t get to do. I spend a great deal of time with my daughter during the week. We get to do all the activities that people with a regular 9-to-5 job wouldn’t have the opportunity to do.

UBT: How fun is it to share music with your daughter? WS: We sing all the time. When I started making music for kids, I was a teacher and I didn’t have kids of my own. I really drew a lot of inspiration from my students and the things they were interested in. Now Ella is my main inspiration. She is a great sounding board. She loves music, singing and dancing with me.

On my latest album which was released in Fall 2013, there are a number of songs that were written specifically for her. There is one called Ella’s Umbrella, which is one of my favourites. It is a song about a girl named Ella, her umbrella and being in the rain. After all, being born and raised in Vancouver, I just had to have a “rain song”.

UBT: What is your biggest joy as a Dad? WS: My favourite thing to do with Ella is just dance. We put on some happy music, and just dance in the living room. Ella just loves it. That is my biggest joy right now.

UBT: We can all learn from kids about self-expression because they know how to let loose. How is it to perform for kids? WS: As an audience, I think they are just fantastic. The main reason is that they don’t worry about what other people are thinking or that others are watching. They really know how to enjoy themselves when listening to music.

Will Stroet, Children’s Performer Will Stroet doesn’t consider himself a rock star. He sees himself more of a pebble star. The popular Vancouverite is married to his manager Kim and the couple have a four-year old daughter Ella, with a second daughter expected this month.

With kids, you get honest reactions so you have to be good. Adults will usually sit there patiently even if the show is not that great. Kids, on the otherhand, give it 30 seconds. If you don’t connect with them right away, they get bored or just walk away. So they keep you on your toes.

UBT: What’s next for Canada’s Pebble Star personally and professionally? WS: On a personal level, we are having baby number two arriving soon. We are hoping our daughter doesn’t come early because during the ten days leading up to the due date, I am performing at Children’s Festivals in Saskatoon and Winnipeg.

On a professional level, we have several projects in early stages of development. Our goal is to get a foothold in the other parts of Canada and we are currently working on a tour in Ontario next fall. We are also trying to break into the American market and moving forward with those plans.

This summer I will be doing my 1000th performance for children. It is certainly not about being an overnight sensation. We keep working hard but it has been so much fun. I can hardly believe that I can do this for a living. I feel really blessed! •

In the City: Birthday Party PlannerPlanning a birthday party can be a time consuming task. Pressure to spend a fortune, invite everyone you know and pull off a memorable event can be stressful. We’ve rounded up some great local birthday party ideas, entertainment and venues to keep in mind when planning your next birthday party.

Plan and Focus The first step is to relax and realize you don’t have to do it all. Pick one area to focus on – something that will let you put your personal stamp on the party, but won’t overtax you. If you enjoy expressing your creative side, make hand-made decorations. If baking is your thing, go all out with the birthday cake.

Consider Electronic Invitations Electronic invitations are a great way to save time and money. Enter the email addresses of your invitees and the site will automatically send out invitations, track the RSVPs, and send out reminders before the party.

Pick a Theme Take time to select a theme which will set the mood and provide a focus for decorations and entertainment. Consider your child’s favourite activities, books, TV shows and movies. Picking a “generic” theme instead of a character-specific theme can be easier on the wallet. For example, for that “princess party”, visit discount stores for anything pink and sparkly, in lieu of character-themed plates and napkins.

Timing Matters When the party starts and ends will dictate the amount and type of food you’ll need to serve. A party that goes from late morning to early afternoon will usually involves serving lunch – which can really bump up your budget. If the party starts later, you’ll have the option of just serving snacks and cake.

Location and Entertainment Consider the time and money you have available when choosing your location and entertainment. If you pick a venue that does all-inclusive birthday parties, you’ll spend less time but more money. Many of these venues offer cheaper rates on weekdays, so be sure to ask. If you hold the party at your house or a park, you’ll spend less but you will need more time to prepare.

For your home party, organize in advance, plenty of entertaining and inexpensive party games that you can put together quickly such as musical chairs, scavenger hunts, freeze dances or obstacle courses.

Decorate Plan your decorations around your theme. You can save a few dollars by using things you already have that fit the theme. For example, lawn chairs, towels, sand pails, and a colourful umbrellas will help set the mood for your “beach” theme. If your birthday girl or boy would like a character-specific theme such as Thomas the Train, Elmo, or Barbie select a few character-specific items. Consider choosing additional “generic” items in a solid colour that matches your theme. If you have decided to hold the party at an all-inclusive venue, bear in mind that most of them supply the decorations, so be sure to check before you buy anything.

Simplify the Food Does your themes lend itself to any specific type of food? Hotdogs and popcorn are perfect for a “baseball theme” and are easy on the budget. If you decide to order pizzas, ask for them to be “double cut”. You’ll end up with smaller, kid-size pieces and less will go to waste. Remember to use coupons when you placing your order.

Streamline the Goody Bags The cost of all the little goodies can add up. Fancy bags take more time to prepare so if you are swamped, consider alternatives. You could give each guest a creatively-wrapped single items such as a colouring book, sand pail or character-themed item. You could also plan a party activity that incorporates an end-of-party gift. Plan a treasure hunt where the guests take home all the goodies they find.

Accept Help You don’t have to do it all yourself! If family or friends offer help, take advantage of their talents. Having someone else bake the cake or help with face painting will enable you to focus on all the other details.

Remember the whole point is for your birthday boy or girl to have fun. You want your guests to enjoy themselves too. Through careful planning, you can figure out ingenious ways to create that awesome party that fits your budget. •

When Anna Stanley* moved from Sweden to North America with two toddlers and a four-month-old baby in tow, she was cognizant on how the transition could affect the children.

Depending on who you ask, moving can be either an adventure packed with funny stories with a happy ending, or a stress-filled event.

“We told our sons a month in advance that we would be moving,” Anna recalls. “We gave each of them a globe and explained to them where we would be going. It was a memorable learning experience for all of us”.

No two moving stories are the same, but there are some universal suggestions that can help everyone.

Know What You Are Moving Into Whether you are moving just a few blocks away or across the world, tell your children as much as you know. Approach the topic in a casual conversation and pitch it as a “family adventure”. Get photos of the new place or take your children to the new home and neighbourhood prior to moving in. Bear in mind that an empty house may look unfriendly to young children as compared to the familiar home they were used to.

Tip: You can use a map of the city, province or country, to help your child understand the move better.

Pack Together It’ll slow things down, but when children become part of packing, they become less intimidated. Having control over a situation when big changes take place is important. Let your children pack their own toys and also help with other stuff. Make sure you have a couple of cardboard boxes for them to play with while packing. Playing will lessen the anxiety of watching things disappear into boxes.

Tip: If your child refuses to pack certain things for the move, don’t pressure. Naturally there can be some sadness when your children realize they are leaving the home they know best. Have a cuddle and be ready to wipe away the tears. Be prepared to answer questions. Various emotions may be expressed while your children process that big overwhelming life event.

Be Open to Talking Depending on your child’s temperament, you can expect sadness when your child realizes that there is no turning back. “Our oldest cried a great deal when we were halfway to our new home.” Anna comments. “Comfort your child” she suggests. “Talk about the place you are leaving behind, just like your child did”.

Stress-free Moving: Helping Children Settle In

fami ly | by Daniella Ginta

Page 13: Urbanbaby & Toddler Magazine - Summer 2014

summer 2014 | www.urbanbaby.ca | 13

One thing you have to remember is that children live in the moment and that means they’ll be overwhelmed with emotions. Children can cope easier when they are encouraged to express themselves.

Tip: Do not hide your own worries as you talk to your children. Allow them to see that you are also feeling apprehensive about what’s to come. Convey to them that you will find ways to cope with all the changes that a move brings. Children learn best by example.

Get Used to the New Digs Explore every part of the new house, then step out to explore the surroundings. If any family member is available to help – you’re in luck.

Both Anna’s mother and mother-in-law helped out with the kids while the parents got the house organized. Having a familiar face while getting use to a new place can be very beneficial for young children. “The best thing their Grandmas did was to take them out for walk in the new neighborhood,” Anna adds. “They got to see it up close while the unpacking and organizing continued.”

Tip: If possible, designate a play area in your new home where you have some favourite toys ready, when your children get in for the first time. Doing so will help them feel more at home.

If your children will be going to daycare, preschool or kindergarten, explore the new school together and meet the people they will be spending time with.

Help them connect with teachers and caregivers to ease their transition. If at all possible, stick around the home for a few days before going back to work.

Bottom Line Moves are big life events but they don’t have to be stressful. By helping your children be well-prepared for the “family adventure” and get comfortable in their new home, you can make your family move as smooth as possible. •

Daniella writes mostly about life with children and the environment. She has survived successfully a few moves with her two sons and two guinea pigs, including one across the province. She takes pride in having her sons see every move as the next great adventure and an opportunity to know more about the province they live in.

The answer is that your baby is learning, and at an incredibly rapid pace. Your baby is constantly learning from the moment they are born. The good news is that there is probably very little you need to do, aside from what you are already doing, to facilitate your baby’s brain development in the first few months.

It is important to understand the developmental changes that are taking place, and know that you play a fundamental role in your baby’s development, beyond physical care.

Developmental milestones most often discussed with your physician are physical, not cognitive ones. However, there are very important developments, especially regarding language, taking place in your child’s brain. Baby is learning to communicate, and to understand his environment. For this to happen, your baby needs to bond with you emotionally at a deep level.

Your interaction with your baby, both physical and verbal, your prompt response to their needs, and the environment around your baby will deeply affect your baby’s bond and trust in you. This in turn will affect their relationships with the rest of the family and the outside world, now and for years to come.

During the first months your baby needs to know that you will respond to their needs. Feed them when they are hungry (rather than on a strict schedule), soothe them when they are tired, change them when soiled, and most importantly, hold them.

Hold your baby often and as close to your body as possible – skin touching whenever you get the chance. This alone will take care of forming vital connections in your baby’s brain, and also help your baby grow physically.

Do not be afraid of “spoiling” your baby because your baby needs you to hold them. This is when the learning happens during the first month. When you are feeding your baby, talk to them and focus on them until they are asleep. Leave the TV or cell phone for when you are not with him. Your baby is

bonding with you, and learning to recognize your voice, your facial features and your smell.

Don’t try to be ultra productive and reply to your e-mails while baby is busy feeding—baby needs that interaction. It also fills you with endorphins, and gives you the strength you need during all the sleepless nights.

During the first second and third months babies already begin to act less out of reflex and more out of slight expectations they have learned. They expect the same people to hold them, they expect to be picked up when they cry, and they anticipate being fed when they hear the voice of their mother nearby. They also expect being sung to, rocked, or receiving pats on their backs after feeding or at usual times. All these familiar habits teach babies to trust their caregivers.

Learning through habits or routines is recommended that you keep these routines consistent to help your baby learn. For example, if you generally sing to your baby while you rock them, always do it so your baby learns to expect it.

This is when your baby is learning to “connect the dots” and begin making sense of her world. It is also what will teach your baby that the world is a place she can trust, which is essential to her emotional development. Help your baby predict what comes next by gently guiding her schedule to adjust to an established one.

For example, rather than going to bed whenever you feel tired each night, or getting up when you wake up, regardless of what time that is, try slowly making the environment more quiet and darker at the same time each night, and you will see that in a few weeks, both your baby and you will come to adjust to that time as your bed time.

Cognitive Development: Facilitating Baby’s MilestonesWith a newborn in your arms, there are already so many things you are thinking about: making sure your baby is fed; kept warm enough; changed and cleaned; and getting enough rest. And if so, how do you “teach” baby at this age?

Parent-Child Attachment: What You Need to KnowAttachment is one of those words you hear floating around in parent programs and resources, often without sufficient context. It’s term that is blanketed in a heavy layer of buzz and it is constantly heralded as being incredibly important for children’s development.

As a parent, you might be worried about whether or not you’re doing the right things to help establish secure attachment with your child. Here is a quick primer on what secure attachment is; why it’s important, and how you can facilitate the development:

What is Attachment? Attachment is a specific aspect of the relationship between a parent and child that is meant to make the child feel safe and secure. The quality of relationship and the amount of responsiveness a parent shows toward their child is the primary indicator as to what type of attachment bond will form between them.

There are four patterns of attachment that have been pinpointed. These are: secure, avoidant, resistant, and disorganized. Secure attachment is what is generated when parents or caregivers respond to their infant’s distress in ways that are sensitive and caring.

That is, the child can express negative emotions because they know that their parent will respond with comforting actions. This allows for a secure base that a child can explore their environment from.

The three other types are classified as insecure forms of attachment and involve some common denominators. When parents or caregivers respond to their child’s distress in ways that reject the child, such as ignoring, ridiculing, or becoming annoyed, children learn that their parent or caregiver does not provide a safe base. This results in the child having difficulties developing qualities such as compassion, empathy, and problems in regulating emotions.

Why is Secure Attachment Important? With secure attachment, a child can be reliably predicted to develop a good capacity for adequate social and emotional development.

Children who experience secure attachment are much more likely to be resilient to stress and to be able to regulate and control their negative emotions. Helping your child to develop social and

emotional resilience sets them up for a promising future in which they can bounce back from negative events that inevitably occur during the course of a lifetime.

Be Consistent in Your Care Routines Routines are an important aspect in helping your child to feel safe and secure. When care routines are predictable, your child learns that you are a dependable and trustworthy person.

Be a Responsive Caregiver It is important to be sensitive and responsive in your caregiving. Make sure to pay attention to your child’s cues and to whether they are content or experiencing distress. Respond to and address distressed feelings in a loving and caring manner.

Don’t be Afraid of “Spoiling”: You can’t spoil your child with kindness and responsiveness! By providing your child with a safe base, you help build self-confidence, resilience, and trust.

Don’t Worry, Nobody’s Perfect: You can’t always respond perfectly to every situation that occurs day-to-day with your child.

If you can focus on fostering secure attachment most of the time, congratulate yourself on a job well-done. •

One thing to remember is to go over what being at camp will entail. Having a buddy can help ease the apprehension. In fact, many children opt to go to camp outside of their community if they know some of their friends from school will be attending. Either way, it is important to involve them in these decisions.

Pros• Learn independence and how to thrive on a daily basis• Build social skills and learn to adapt to new situations• Focus on a hobby, sport or certain interest

Cons• Homesickness is inevitable but the degree is different

for each child• Less/different structure than used to at home

in terms of routine, rules and chores• Substantial preparation required to get child ready

Preparing your child for overnight camp involves several steps. It takes time to adapt to being separated from Mom, Dad and siblings for long periods of time. Homesickness is something that will most likely occur and you and your child need to be ready for it. Missing home; and missing Mom and Dad, is a normal response to being away for the first time.

When choosing a summer camps, it pays to do your research. Use the Internet as well as word-of-mouth. Ask friends and family for their recommendations and ask their kids as well.

Consider what your child is interested in, and research accordingly. Some camps focus primarily on such activities as swimming, tennis or dance. By choosing carefully you can be assured that your child will have the best opportunity for a fun-filled, exciting first summer away from home. Costs vary depending on the type and length of the camp; as well as location and amenities.

I discovered that average pricing ranged from $400 and up per week. Many camps offer financial assistance for lower income

families so double check if the camp you are looking at offers this option. Another great way to seek out alternatives is to contact your local community center. Ask the staff if they have any suggestions (as staff are often very knowledgeable and may be able to help you narrow down your search).

Deciding whether or not to send your child to overnight camp for the first time is a big deal. Do your best and enjoy the fact that your little one is growing up. Consider it just another milestone like that first smile or those first steps. When your child experiences staying overnight at summer camp, the enjoyment of “exploration” and “new adventures” can more than make up for those initial feelings of “uneasiness”. •

Chelene is a Vancouver writer and poet. She and her 12-year old daughter are always on the lookout for fun and new summer activities.

Staying Overnight at Summer Camp: Is Your Child Ready?Sending a child to overnight summer camp is a big decision. There is no right or wrong answer because there is no set age when a child should be ready to leave his parents. Before deciding, consider the pros and cons to determine if your child is ready.

2. What is your favourite activity to do with your child? We love going fishing. My son gets excited at 6am when he knows we are heading out to the lake for the day.

3. What is your favourite movie? Our favourite movie to watch as a family is currently Frozen and How to Train a Dragon.

4. What was the last book you’ve read? I’m currently reading The Closer by Marino Rivera. I’m a big baseball fan and couldn’t put the book down.

5. What is one product or service you can’t live without? It has to be my digital camera. I love capturing my son’s important milestones and sharing pictures with our family as he grows up.

6. How do you find some “Daddy Time”? I love spending time with Jackson, but I really enjoy an afternoon at the driving range or a night out with my co-workers watching hockey.
