URBAN GARDENING.
Through engagement with mothers, fathers and care takers of children aged 6 months to 23 months , we intend to practice urban vegetable farming.
The vegetables grown will supplement the two legumes one cereal providing micronutrients and vitamin C for absorption of iron.
Why practice urban gardening? A survey done
in 2009 by the Ministry of Health in informal settlements in Kampala city revealed that vegetables were least (15.7%) consumed of all foods.
This sends a message that the poor need to be helped appreciate the need for inclusion of a vegetable on their diets.
Methods of urban garden to be used.
Container gardens
Available land space
Examples of the vegetables Nakati, Ddodo,
Tomatoes Sukuma wiki, bugga, pumpkins, French beans, onions.
The different vegetables have different high value micro nutrients thus it necessitates the growth of a variety of the vegetables.
