Choosing Local.By Mike ClousePhotography Megan Clouse

Without a doubt there has been a shift the last few years in how we do our shopping. In some areas, like electronics and books, the shift has been online. We browse, research and purchase items with the click of a mouse and typically those items can be sitting on our doorsteps the very next day... pretty cool. Food however has taken an entirely different route.

Watching onl ine companies l ike webvan.com go bankrupt is an example of how when it comes to food, we tend to think different. We have watched companies like Whole Foods explode over the last 10 years and local farmers’ markets are flourishing in towns and cities across the country... but why?

Speaking for myself, choosing my food is too intimate to do online and after really seeing and tasting the difference between fresh fruits and vegetables from my local grower as compared to shopping at one of the big supermarkets... hands down, local wins every time.

Another fast growing trend is in community-supported agriculture better known as CSA. I have enjoyed our local CSA and not only knowing (cont.)

that the produce is local and fresh and only having items available that are in season has been a shift for me... a good shift. Eating fresh, local, seasonally available food has without a doubt added to not only the quality of my eating but has introduced me to all kinds of new and flavorful foods that I most likely would have passed up on my way to grab some broccoli at the supermarket.

But there is also an economic impact. Buying local supports local families and local economies. With so many industries being outsourced and moved offshore to reduce costs, it feels good knowing that by staying local and supporting our local growers we are making a difference... and let’s face it, it’s a win-win for sure. We get to eat and enjoy amazing local foods!

“Cooking creates a sense of well-being for yourself and the people you love and brings beauty and meaning to everyday life. And all it requires is common sense – the common sense to eat seasonally, to know where your food comes from, to support and buy from local farmers and producers who are good stewards of our natural resources….” – Alice Waters

Starting Urban Farm Cupboard has been heavily influenced by the local food movement. My decision to keep the manufacturing in the U.S. and support local families and communities just made sense. It would seem completely backward to waste natural resources to ship my products into the country and then be used by customers who are striving to do the right thing when it comes to buying local. Un-crating and installing cabinets that were shipped over on a container ship in turn for food to be prepared that was thoughtfully purchased by simply taking a walk to the

local farmers’ market just didn’t ring true with me...so I decided to change it. Local matters, and anything that we can do to help make those choices available to our clients is a good thing.

Cheers,Mike Clouse

Road Trip

HOG ISLAND OYSTER

Since 1986 the Hog Island Oyster farm has been open to the public, serving up an exceptional farm-to-plate oyster experience, straight from the source. Grab some friends and head to the beautiful surroundings of Tomales Bay. Reserve a picnic table by the bay and shuck-your-own oysters or visit The Boat - the oyster bar on the farm, or drop in and buy fresh shellfish to go.

Be warned, the shuck-your-own picnic tables are booked by reservation only and are typically booked-out weeks or months in advance...yup, this place rocks!

In the 1930’s my great grandfather was building cabinets in Sonoma, CA. The El Verano Lumber and Mill was the family business and today, 80+ years later I’m still as excited as ever to be designing and building cabinetry that would make him proud. Urban Farm Cupboard Co. is focused on great design, quality materials, expert local craftsmanship and meticulous installations.

I would love to connect and hear about your project and how we can help.

Mike is the right balance of design skills and project management that is so hard to find. He has great ideas, but more importantly can understand what the customer wants and make it even better.  Once the design is done, the project management kicks in and things get done on time and on budget.  Mike is the whole package.
