Background Information
• Race put on by Defense Advanced Research Project Associations (DARPA)– Challenge for public to:• 1) Increase new technologies for autonomous
vehicles (driverless vehicles)– Possible use in war-torn areas– Saving human lives
• 2) Entice and enhance public interest in science and engineering
Background Information
• DARPA has sponsored three races– 1st Race – technology such that vehicles
only drove 8 miles– 2nd Race (Grand Challenge) – many
vehicles traveled 137 miles across the Mojave Desert• Team Gray finished 4th
– 3rd Race (Urban Challenge) – 60miles in less than 6 hours – must obey all California traffic laws and by-pass/tackle obstacles.
The Stats
• 35 Semifinalists traveled to Victorville, CA– Qualifying Rounds - October 26th – 30th
• Based on vehicle safety• ‘Unsafe’ vehicles are eliminated
• 11 Finalists chosen and will compete in actual race– Team Gray was not one of the finalists• GPS Sensor difficulties – last car of the 24
eliminated
