If the reaction from the runners at the Great Spillway Classic is any indication, the answer is a resounding "YES". In fact, many participants at the Club's recent events have taken the time to express their appreciation of the Club's efforts. So, on behalf of all the Clubmembers, I want to publicly say "THANKS" to Chuck, the new Boardmembers, and all the volunteers who have worked so hard to make this summer a most enjoyable one.

The best news, however, is that the Fall schedule is shaping up to be a real winner. To facilitate your planning, please look for a schedule which includes not only the NOTC races, but many other area races as well. We took the liberty of adding several races that were advertized, even though some of the race directors were too busy to respond. We appreciate the support and cooperation that we received from the CTC, BRRA, OSRC, and GCRC in compiling this list. We hope that the other local "major" running club(s) will take a moment to let us know what races they will be offering this season.

Of general interest to clubmembers is a recent Board decision to standardize the age group categories for Club races. We believe that this move will make it easier (and more meaningful) for you to gauge your performance from race to race. Look for the standard age groups starting with the races on the Fall Schedule.

Congratulations to all the current leaders in the New Orleans "Grand Prix". A summary of the runners who have accumulated over 100 points in each of the "Grand Prix" categories is available at all Club events. Just ask Martha George, who is coordinating our membership activities, for a copy of the latest point totals and standings.

Finally, with cooler weather just around the corner, your attention will soon be turning to the longer races of the upcoming Marathon season. I am pleased to announce our plans for the 24th Annual Mardi Gras Marathon race series, which will again be sponsored by "BUD LIGHT". This 5 event series included the 2 Mile MGM Kickoff Classic (recently held in City Park), and will feature the upcoming Mini-Marathon (2 and 10 Mile races), the Larry Fuselier 25 Km, and The Wall (a 5 Mile and 30 Km event). The MGM series culminates with a 5 Km, Half Marathon, and Full Marathon roadrace extravaganza which is scheduled for January 21, 1989.

As always, I look forward to hearing your comments on the current and planned Club activities. In any event, I hope you will join us in the fun this fall running season offers all clubmembers.

This third Flag Relay seems to have been the most successful of all, both in numbers of parti­cipants and in the response they had to the relay and the 'Party Under the Oaks.'

I hope you will be with us again next year and, with an earlier start, we can build onto this year's success.

On Saturday, July 2nd, the sun was shining down on over 1,500 people who gathered in the Riverwalk at the Spanish Plaza for the First Annual YMCA River- walk Walk. It was a star-spangled 5K event for speed walkers, fitness walkers, and recreational walkers of all ages. The walkers enjoyed the walk from the Riverwalk to the Superdome and back to the Riverwalk. Everyone enjoyed post-walk festivities in the Spanish Plaza which included cold pasta primavera from Pasta Fresca, Bud Light, Kentwood Spring Water, 10K, fresh fruit from Schwegmann's and Zack's Frozen Yogurt, while listening to the music of the Riverwalk Jazz Band.

Random prizes were awarded in­cluding a three-day cruise on the Delta

Queen, dinner for two at the Pontchar- train Hotel, merchandise from Riverwalk merchants, prizes from Bayou Walking Tapes and Birenstock—The Walking Shoe Store. The first person to cross the finish line was Ed Whiteman. The first female was Lois Wells. Ed has been a marathon runner for 6 years and a race walker for 7 months. When asked why he switched to race walking, he answered, "I like the rhythm. It's a lot like dancing." - _

Touro Infirmary presented three clinics with information and demonstrations for walking for fitness and fun. Over 100 people attended each clinic.
