Pay-as-you-drive car insu ance can yield big discounts for some drivers but privacy issues worry many Pay-as-youshydrive may be the future of car insurance and a way to save money Thats clearly what insurers are suggesting -- but is it the best coverage for you If youre like most drivers maybe not If you drive a lot at the wrong times of day or are reluctant to give up the Ie t lane many other car-insurance discounts are available No all low-mileage discounts require a pay-as-you-drive (PAYO) device for example But few offer the savings potential that maxed out PAYO plans do The gizmos used by car-insura ce companies promise discounts of as much as 50 hey come in two types- An insurer-supplied device th t plug s into your cars on board diagnostics (OBOII) port nd typically reports your cars mileage speed brakin and hours of operation- A car-manufacturer-designed telematics system such as OnStar or Sync that typically reports only mileage Youll find a roundup of current PAYO offerings at Payer as-you-drive car insurance Who offers whatWhen your insurer rides shotgun With all PAYO plans the easiest path to a huge discount is very low annual mileage In some cases the best rates go to customers who drive less than 2500 miles a year Some programs may req uire that you address how you drive tiol jusf tiorfilucfl Even Progressive a pioneer Tn Trie PA1U market wit~ its much-hyped Snapshot device says people who drive aggressively -- and a lot -- may want to pass Many customers of PAYO programs say braking measurements are the biggest surprise William Parsons a New Yorker who ended up with about a 15 discount after signing up for Snapshot wonders if his premium cut would have been bigger if he hadnt been penalized for hard braking during his test periodlt seemed a little touchy to me the way they regshyistered braking pressures he says Im a careful driver so didnt think I did much intense brakingOne program is aimed specifically at drivers who are turning over a new leaf Safecos Rewind uses PAYO technology to monitor its customers who have racked up minor violations or at-fault accidents and would otherwise face increased rates Will a

7 gotchas of cheap car insurance By Barb fa ~arquand Carinsur nc~com

I You ma thi k a nonstandard policy is a great deal but make sure it r illy I rovides the coverage you expect to have Some insurers firo ise cheap car-insurance rates even if ymrliave a string jf cRj3eding tickets or bad credit How can they do it The an wers are in the fine print of their car-insurance pelicies IBehind a seemingly great bargain could lurk a series of exclu ion and limits that reduce the likelihoob you can file a claim But you cant tell solely by the price they charge ShoPPinf f r affordable insurance isnt like shopping for cheap g s ne insurance companys quote could exclude coverag th t another might include at the same pricelts OK to compfre rices but once you see the prices you have to find out that s covered and whats not covered and make sure youre $mp ring apples to apples says Penny Gusner a Carinsur nc com consumer analyst If youre a low-mileage driver y u rr ight want to look first at what are known as pay-as- u-lJrive plans and consider other common types of car-insu fl nc~ middot diScounts If none of those seemsl like a good fit heres what to watch out for as you explore other options

I 7 fine-print gotchas ~ Preferre or standard car- insurance policies are geared to drivers ith clean or moderately clean driving records and decent redi ratings Nonstandard policies are ~esigned for risky cuiolers who dont qualify for standard or preferred rates S me~ re written speci fi cally for specialty crrs such as a Ferrari or ei restored 57 Chevy Smaller companies that speshycialize in cat$ring to high-risk custome or Cas~i~-2r olsts used to 0jinate the nonstandard market But today many major in ur rs such as Allstate and State tarm sell bo~h standar~an nonstandard policies I

With no sta dard car insurance accounting f9r about a fifth of the priv ie assenger auto insurance markt according to industry na yst Conning amp Co its easy to s~e why insurers want a pice of the action But no insurance qmpany is going to take ron e tra risk without offsetting it either by charging

boy with a speeding ticket for instance -- a nonstandard policy might require you to exclude him from coverage Standard policies also exclude coverage for drivers -shypeople who use your car with your permission Or they might exclude coverage for permissive drivers under age 25 or 21 In some states insurers can include step-down provisions in their policies Under a step-down provision the liability limits are reduced to state required minimum levels when someone whos not named on the policy drives your car So even if you pay for higher-than-required liability coverage you could have less protection when you let a friend borrow your car than when youre driving NO2 More driving-record checks If youre a preferred driver an insurance company may check your driving record once a year or maybe once every other year Gusner says But if you already have a checkered driving history the insurer might check your driving record every middotsix months before each coverage term begins so it can adjust the premium accordingly No_3 No special benefits Dont count on getting some of the extra goodies advertised by major insurers on TV for their best customers Usually a nonstandard pelicy will come without the perks of a standard policy - no vanishing deductible or accident forshygiveness Gusner says Even those perks arent really free - those customers premiums are higher - but they arent usually an option for the nonstandard customer No4 No coverage for punitive damages If Y0U C3 11 se qr ~cifjAflt ~ld are sUp-d some flQnstandard policies exclude coverage for punitive or exemplary damages That means youd be on the hook for paying those damages if a court sides with the other guy No5 Less coverage for repairs Under collision or comprehensive coverage a standard policy generally pays for the full cost of repairs unless the car is declared a total loss If the car is totaled the policy pays the depreciated value of the car - its market value immediately before it was damaged But some nonstandard policies take d~preciation into account even for repairs Instead of paying the fu ll amount to repair hail damage on an older car for instance the policy would pay only a percentage of the cost based on the vehicles depreciation

boy with a speeding ticket for instance -- a nonstandard policy might require you to exclude him from coverage Standard policies also exclude coverage for drivers -shypeople who use your car with your permission Or they might exclude coverage for permissive drivers under age 25 or 21 In some states insurers can include step-down provisions in their policies Under a step-down provision the liability limits are reduced to state required minimum levels when someone whos not named on the policy drives your car So even if you pay for higher-than-required liability coverage you could have less protection when you let a friend borrow your car than when youre driving NO2 More driving-record checks If youre a preferred driver an insurance company may check your driving record once a year or maybe once every other year Gusner says But if you already have a checkered driving history the insurer might check your driving record every middotsix months before each coverage term begins so it can adjust the premium accordingly No_3 No special benefits Dont count on getting some of the extra goodies advertised by major insurers on TV for their best customers Usually a nonstandard pelicy will come without the perks of a standard policy - no vanishing deductible or accident forshygiveness Gusner says Even those perks arent really free - those customers premiums are higher - but they arent usually an option for the nonstandard customer No4 No coverage for punitive damages If Y0U C3 11 se qr ~cifjAflt ~ld are sUp-d some flQnstandard policies exclude coverage for punitive or exemplary damages That means youd be on the hook for paying those damages if a court sides with the other guy No5 Less coverage for repairs Under collision or comprehensive coverage a standard policy generally pays for the full cost of repairs unless the car is declared a total loss If the car is totaled the policy pays the depreciated value of the car - its market value immediately before it was damaged But some nonstandard policies take d~preciation into account even for repairs Instead of paying the fu ll amount to repair hail damage on an older car for instance the policy would pay only a percentage of the cost based on the vehicles depreciation

boy with a speeding ticket for instance -- a nonstandard policy might require you to exclude him from coverage Standard policies also exclude coverage for drivers -shypeople who use your car with your permission Or they might exclude coverage for permissive drivers under age 25 or 21 In some states insurers can include step-down provisions in their policies Under a step-down provision the liability limits are reduced to state required minimum levels when someone whos not named on the policy drives your car So even if you pay for higher-than-required liability coverage you could have less protection when you let a friend borrow your car than when youre driving NO2 More driving-record checks If youre a preferred driver an insurance company may check your driving record once a year or maybe once every other year Gusner says But if you already have a checkered driving history the insurer might check your driving record every middotsix months before each coverage term begins so it can adjust the premium accordingly No_3 No special benefits Dont count on getting some of the extra goodies advertised by major insurers on TV for their best customers Usually a nonstandard pelicy will come without the perks of a standard policy - no vanishing deductible or accident forshygiveness Gusner says Even those perks arent really free - those customers premiums are higher - but they arent usually an option for the nonstandard customer No4 No coverage for punitive damages If Y0U C3 11 se qr ~cifjAflt ~ld are sUp-d some flQnstandard policies exclude coverage for punitive or exemplary damages That means youd be on the hook for paying those damages if a court sides with the other guy No5 Less coverage for repairs Under collision or comprehensive coverage a standard policy generally pays for the full cost of repairs unless the car is declared a total loss If the car is totaled the policy pays the depreciated value of the car - its market value immediately before it was damaged But some nonstandard policies take d~preciation into account even for repairs Instead of paying the fu ll amount to repair hail damage on an older car for instance the policy would pay only a percentage of the cost based on the vehicles depreciation
