From the Pastor’s OfficeSecond Sunday in Ordinary Time

The scriptures begin with the calling of Samuel to follow the Lord. Initially it

is all a bit of a mess because Samuel hears voices, but he can’t decipher

who is speaking or what all of this means. Samuel hears the voice of God

calling him. The initial confusion lies in the fact that Samuel hears some-

thing, but he doesn’t know who is speaking. It takes time but eventually he

gets the idea. Speak Lord, your servant is listening. To listen and to hear

the voice of the Lord takes some practice. To make things worse we are not

very good at paying attention. We have been that way since childhood.

Sometimes in order to get my attention the Lord God has to metaphorically

bash me around the head to get me to listen. The word “vocation” comes

to mind here. Those of us who testify to having a vocation will say that we

heard the voice of God calling us. Sometimes it took us a while to understand

who and what we were hearing but with practice we eventually got it.

“Speak Lord, your servant is listening.”

The apostles also heard the call of Jesus. They were much more spontaneous

and willing. I suggest that they were waiting for a while for this call “to

arms.” Initially they were waiting for someone to start the revolution. It was

time to drive the Romans out of their land. Galilee in the north of Israel was

a hotbed of subversion. People in Israel had little time for people from Galilee

because they were considered trouble makers. The Bible says it all very

elegantly. According to the gospel today, the disciples were kind of standing

there watching. Then Jesus walked by and they said, “Behold, the Lamb of

God.” People don’t speak like that. More like, “That’s Him.” The first con-

versation has Jesus asking them, “What are you looking for?” They are kind

of curious, so Jesus invites them to come and see. Initially there is a first

impression, an attraction. I would like to know more about this stranger

man who walks with a swagger. He has confidence. There is more to this

one than meets the eye. That is the testimony of every follower. I would like

to know more. Tell me about yourself. What are you about? Things develop

    from there.

    With love,

    Fr. Pat

like to talk with him about this, or, who would like to know more. For

THIS WEEK, THE CHURCH RETURNS TO ORDINARY

TIME. In our everyday use of the word “ordinary’, it

means just that: everyday, plain, or unremarkable.

But as we know, life with God is never that way!

Used in the way the church intends, the word “Ordinary” tells

us simply that these are the numbered or ordered weeks of

the year – the weeks that are not part of the seasons of Advent,

Lent or Easter. You may notice that the gold flags of Christmas

have been replaced by green ones, as have the priest’s vest-

ments. We will remain in Ordinary Time until we begin Lent on

Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17. It is important to remember that

even in Ordinary Time, God is always revealing to us the ex-

    traordinary!

ON TUES., FEB. 2, AT THE NOON MASS, WE WILL CELEBRATE:

    • CANDLEMAS DAY, The Feast of the Presentation of

the Lord. This is the traditional day when the candles

that are used in church and the ones you will use at

home throughout the year are brought to the church

to be blessed. We bless our candles on this day to

remind us of Simeon’s proclamation that Jesus will be a

light to everyone in this world. Please bring your candles

and place them in front of the altar before Mass.

    • BLESSING OF THE THROATS. Legend tells us that St.

Blaise cured a young boy choking on a fish bone, so we

ask for St. Blaise’s intercession of healing or keeping us

free from any illness or injury to our throats.

LITURGICAL MINISTERS! Do you know your EIM (Ethics and

Integrity in Ministry) anniversary date? If you don’t, please call

the parish office at (512) 892-2420. All members of liturgical

ministries (including Mass Coordinators, Ushers & Hospitality,

Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Cantors,

Musicians and Choir Members) over 18 years of age must

remain in compliance with this Diocesan program as a required

part of their service in the parish ministry.

2021 RELIGIOUS CALENDARS are available for

purchase in the Church Office. Cost is $3 and

    quantities are limited.

IN LOVING MEMORY: Christmas poinsettias were donated in

    memory of:

    Carolyn and Frank Foppiano

    Elizabeth and Frank Foppiano

    Nellie and Peter Petersen

    Betty, Becky, and Donnie Odom

Their names were inadvertently omitted from the Christmas

bulletin and poster. Please remember them in your prayers.

ST. CATHERINE’S PRESCHOOL AT HOME PRESCHOOL LESSONS

FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN AGES 2-5. The weekly themes

have fun and interactive child-centered activities. All plans

include prayers, songs, stories, activities, bible lessons, crafts,

finger plays, and recipes. The At Home Preschool lesson plans

are $30/week or $75/month. For a sample lesson plan, visit

our website or contact Camille Parker at (512) 892-2420, ext.

    319 or [email protected].

THIS WEEK’S AT HOME PRESCHOOL THEME: SPACE.

Our solar system is full of amazing things, most of which your

child can’t even see. Learn more about the solar system with

your child by listening to our book, Me and My Place in Space.

Let them see pictures of real astronauts. When it’s warm

enough, let your child pretend to be an astronaut while they

play in water. Working in water is similar to working in space.

To demonstrate the effects of gravity, let your child compare a

balloon with helium to one with air. The one with helium stays

up in the air like it’s in space and the one with air sinks down

to the ground. Take time to look at the nighttime sky and find

the moon, stars, and constellations. During the daytime, help

your child notice the light and heat from the sun and then step

into the shade and see if there’s a difference. Let your child be

silly when they make a balloon alien and eat alien Jell-O. What

sounds and movements do they think aliens make? Respond

to any questions your child may have about space, but most of

all, make sure you have lots of fun! Find out more about our At

    Home Preschool program at www.stcatherine-austin.org/at-

    home-preschool.
