Upward Bound
Upward Bound
In 1965, the federal government began a program to help dis-advantaged high school students prepare for a post-secondary educa-tion. The program, Upward Bound, has been in existence at Southern Arkansas University (formerly Southern State College) since 1966.
The program is federally funded, and is designed to generate the academic skills and motivation that will enable each participant to complete a secondary education program, subsequently gain admis-sion to and successfully complete a post-secondary training program.
We believe that the primary responsibility of the program is to pro-vide successful learning experiences designed to meet the individual academic, cultural, social, and vocational needs of each participant within an atmosphere that allows intellectual, physical, and emotional development. We further believe in and strive to provide worthwhile activities which will challenge each participant to achieve his or her fullest potential.
The SAU Upward Bound program is currently funded to serve 180 Southwest Arkansas students.

Upward Bound will be collecting canned and non-perishable food items until December 3. All dona-tions will be donated to the local homeless shelter, Southern Chris-tian Mission. Please be sure that items are not past their expiration dates. Students can bring items to regu-lar Upward Bound meetings through the month of November.
Federal TRIO programs include eight different programs, each supported by grants from the fed-eral government. While sharing the common mission of furthering higher education for disadvan-taged students, each program has its own unique focus. Together, the TRIO programs offer support to students from a variety of different backgrounds, and are not limited to providing support only to high school students. Continued advo-cacy on behalf of TRIO ensures that those students most vulnerable in our society are able to strive for better opportunities. In order to advocate effectively, information about current political conditions that may affect these programs is essential.
What You Can Do Your participation via email, calls and letters, or face-to-face to your state senator or representative are important ways to defend and safeguard the rights of all to a higher education. You should take the time to contact them. "They" are YOUR U.S. senators and repre-sentatives. If you are not sure about your con-gressional district or who your senator or congressman is, please visit: http://www.usa.gov/elected-officials, enter your state, and the site will link you to names and contact information for your state senator and representative. Lend-ing your voice helps. TRIO works!
