GeneralDescriptionThe Series TY-FRL, 5.6 and 8.0 K-fac-tor Upright and Pendent Intermediate

Level Sprinklers described in this datasheet are automatic sprinklers of thequick response solder type. They arestandard spray sprinklers intendedfor use in fire sprinkler systems de-signed in accordance with the stand-ard installation rules recognized by theapplicable Listing or Approval agency(e.g., UL Listing is based on NFPArequirements). Both the Pendent andUpright Sprinklers produce a hemi-spherical water distribution pattern be-low the deflector.

Intermediate Level Sprinklers are pri-marily designed for use in rack storagesprinkler systems where their ther-mally sensitive elements must beshielded from the water spray of higherelevation sprinklers that could operateearlier during a fire. Intermediate LevelSprinklers are also used in other appli-cations such as beneath open griddedcatwalks.

WARNINGSThe Series TY-FRL Sprinklers de-scribed herein must be installed andmaintained in compliance with thisdocument, as well as with the applica-

ble standards of the National Fire Pro-tection Association, in addition to thestandards of any other authorities hav-ing jurisdiction. Failure to do so mayimpair the performance of these de-vices.

The owner is responsible for maintain-ing their fire protection system and de-vices in proper operating condition.The installing contractor or sprinklermanufacturer should be contactedwith any questions.

Operation

The fusible link (heat collector) assem-bly is comprised of two halves that are

joined together by a thin layer of sol-der. When the rated temperature isreached, the solder melts and the twolink halves separate, allowing thesprinkler to operate.

DesignCriteriaThe Series TY-FRL Pendent and Up-right Intermediate Level Sprinklers are

intended for fire protection systemsdesigned in accordance wit h t hestandard installation rules recognizedby the applicable Listing or Approvalagency (e.g., UL Listing is based onthe requirements of NFPA 13, and FMApproval is based on the requirementsof FMs Loss Prevention Data Sheets).

Installation

The Series TY-FRL Sprinklers must beinstalled in accordance with the follow-ing instructions:

NOTEA leak tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler jointshould be obtained with a torque of 7to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maxi-mum of 21 ft. lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torquemay be used to install sprinklers with1/2 NPT connections. A leak tight 3/4inch NPT sprinkler joint should be ob-tained with a torque of 10 to 20 ft.lbs.(13,4 to 26,8 Nm). A maximum of 30ft.lbs. (40,7 Nm) of torque is to be usedto install sprinklers with 3/4 NPT con-

nections. Higher levels of torque maydistort the sprinkler inlet and causeleakage or impairment of the sprinkler.

Upright Sprinklers The Series TY-FRL Intermediate LevelUpright Sprinklers must be installed inaccordance with the following instruc-tions.

Step 1. With pipe thread sealant ap-plied to the pipe threads, hand tightenthe sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting.

Step 2. Tighten the sprinkler into thesprinkler fitting using only the W-Type9 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 3).

With reference to Figure 1 or 2, theW-Type 9 Sprinkler Wrench is to beapplied to the wrenching area.

Pendent Sprinklers The Series TY-FRL Intermediate LevelPendent Sprinklers must be installedin accordance with the following in-structions.

Step 1. Install the Speed-nut over thesprinkler threads until it seats againstthe sprinkler wrenching area flange asshown in Figure 1 or 2, as applicable.

Step 2. Install the Shield over the

sprinkler threads, and then roll the O-

Ring over the sprinkler threads until itis seated firmly against the Shield.

Step 3. With pipe thread sealant ap-plied, hand tighten the sprinkler intothe sprinkler fitting.

Step 4. Tighten the sprinkler into thesprinkler fitting using only the W-Type9 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 3).The wrench is to be applied to thesprinkler wrenching area shown in Fig-ure 1 or 2, as applicable.

When installed correctly, the O-Ringwill be slightly compressed and theShield will be held firmly in place.

Care andMaintenanceThe Series TY-FRL Sprinklers must bemaintained and serviced in accord-ance with the following instructions:

NOTESBefore closing a fire protection systemmain control valve for maintenancework on the fire protection system thatit controls, permission to shutdown theaffected fire protection system must beobtained from the proper authoritiesand all personnel who may be affectedby this action must be notified.

Sprinklers that are found to be leakingor exhibiting visible signs of corrosionmust be replaced.

Automatic sprinklers must never bepainted, plated, coated or otherwise

altered after leaving the factory. Modi-fied or over-heated sprinklers must bereplaced.

Care must be exercised to avoid dam-age to the sprinklers - before, during,and after installation. Sprinklers dam-aged by dropping, striking, wrenchtwist/slippage, or the like, must be re-placed.

The owner is responsible for the in-spection, testing, and maintenance oftheir fire protection system and de-vices in compliance with this docu-ment, as well as with the applicablestandards of the National Fire Protec-

tion Association (e.g., NFPA 25), inaddition to the standards of any otherauthorities having jurisdiction. The in-stalling contractor or sprinkler manu-facturer should be contacted relativeto any questions.

It is recommended that automatics p r in k l er s y s te m s b e i n sp e ct e d,tested, and maintained by a qualifiedInspection Service in accordance withlocal requirements and/or nationalcode.
