Their lives have been faithful to their Jewish Law and now Jesus, apparently a man of God, spends more time with outcasts and sinners. ‘What about us?’ they complain. But notice how they miss the point. The older son has been living a sterile life, not really in relationship with this father. He has been like a ‘slave’ and he distances himself from his father and his brother – ‘this son of yours’. Even though he stayed at home, his relationships are dead. It is the younger son who discovers a living and loving father when he knows he doesn’t deserve one. The father’s love is a gift. Neither son earns it, nor deserves it. God’s love is like this – totally, even irrationally, given. This is the love that Jesus reveals as he lives out God’s welcome to all. The father in the parable welcomes both sons and invites both to join the celebration. We are all freely invited into the reign of God, but we cannot be choosy about our table companions. FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT/C READINGS: Joshua 5:9-12; 2 Corinthians 5:17-21

GOSPEL: Luke 15:1-3, 11-32

Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish

Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.

The New Testament readings this week emphasise reconciliation. In the letter to the Corinthians, we have a very powerful theology of the meaning of the Christ event that is often overlooked. Paul speaks of a ‘new creation’. This is a rare phrase in the New Testament and is one way to reflect on the impact of Jesus. Too often we have focused on other images such as redemption, or making satisfaction for sin. These images have been helpful in the past, but in today’s world, the concept of ‘new creation’ may be more meaningful.

Here Paul suggests that the Jesus event was not simply about human beings but in some mysterious way impacted the entire created world. In this letter, he does not develop this image any further but moves to yet another way of speaking about what God was doing in Jesus. Paul says that God was reconciling the kosmos/world to God’s self. Through this act of God, the kosmos/world is drawn into the very goodness of God’s own self. The key to being part of this new creation is reconciliation.

The Oxford dictionary defines reconciliation as an act of healing of broken relationships: ‘to make friendly after estrangement’. Such reconciliation does achieve a new creation, for the individuals and even nations. Wherever we are, at work or at home, we are to be ambassadors of reconciliation.

Today’s Gospel parable is so familiar that in fact we may miss the point of Jesus’ story. Did you ever realise that the point of the parable is not the younger son who wastes his father’s money? This first story sets the scene for the introduction of the second son, the older ‘stay-at-home’ brother. To understand this parable takes notice of the context. Jesus is at a meal surrounded by tax collectors and sinners, people just like the younger son. The good, religious people of Jesus’ time are scandalised by this behaviour. They complain about Jesus’ dinner companions. The parable is directed to them. They are like the older son in the story.

Michaela is a 21-year-old

trainee at Purple House, a dialysis center in the Central Desert for people suffering from kidney disease. The Aboriginal-controlled service gives patients the opportunity to stay connected with their culture. They do this through traditional healing practices and income-generating activities, such as making bush balms and soaps. With the support of Caritas partners, Michaela is helping to build a social enterprise, a connection to culture and a new outlook for the chronically ill.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2019 and help provide essential health care, employment and training for First Australians

Thank You

from Beth.

Thank you to all who have prayed for my recovery and slow return to health. I really appreciate all your prayers, blessings and good wishes. Thank you so much.

Beth McDonnell

Dear Parishioners, I just want to thank you so much for your prayers for my deceased brother and the family. His death has been a shocking experience for the family and the people of South Sudan. Some of you wrote to me personally, others expressed their sympathy verbally and the majority prayed for my brother’s soul. I really appreciated you taking your time to write to me, verbally expressing your sympathy or sparing your time to pray for him and the family. Again, thank you so much for your prayers and moral support. This has imbued my spirit to carry on my pastoral services with zeal and commitment. Kind regards, Fr Stephen Kumyangi.
