Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.

Holy Week

Morning Prayer is a time of quiet and prayer each day of Holy Week as we step day by day on our journey from dark to the Light. [See page two for times.] Penance is best celebrated before Holy Thursday evening so that, with heart and mind renewed, all may focus on the celebration of the Paschal Mystery.

The Sacred Paschal Triduum of the Passion and Resurrection of the Lord shines forth as the high point of the entire liturgical year.

The Triduum [Three Days] begins with the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

Holy Thursday: Unity is expressed by the single celebration of an evening Eucharist in which the whole parish community gathers to participate in the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. In our parish, that means all three communities of Sts Bernard, Catherine and Martin gather at one church. All priests in the community are encouraged to celebrate together with the gathered community. Project Compassion gifting is usually taken up during the Mass. Bells ring out for the Gloria and then fall silent until the celebration of the resurrection. Apart from the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper all Masses are prohibited.

Friday of the Passion of the Lord [Good Friday]: At all Masses, celebration of the Sacraments is strictly prohibited, except for Penance and Anointing of the Sick, though these are better celebrated prior to Holy Thursday. The liturgy begins and ends in silence. The Liturgy of the Word includes readings, The Passion according to John Homily and solemn Intercessions. This is followed by Adoration of the Cross, by the

priest, Holy Communion and General Adoration.

Holy Saturday is a time of waiting, prayer and preparation for what is to come. Our Catechumens, the Elect, Roshea and Nikki, will spend the morning in prayer and preparation for their initiation in the evening.

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord. We begin this holy feast at The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night. 1. Solemn Beginning: The Blessing of the Fire, Procession and The Exultet 2. Psyche Mae from the Philippines

When Psyche Mae featured in Project Compassion 2008, she was living in a squatter settlement, on the edge of a giant rubbish dump outside Manila in the Philippines. Her family was forced to pick through the rubbish to sell what they could to survive. In 2018, Psyche Mae is now a young social worker, achieving her dream of helping others struggling to leave poverty behind them – with plans to study a Master’s degree. Thanks to the support of individuals and Caritas Australia through Project Compassion, the Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ) program helps people like Psyche Mae to learn job and income-generating skills, encourages education, addresses health and runs programs that enable members to save money and take out small, low interest loans. It’s estimated around 5000 people are assisted directly or indirectly by this program. Psyche Mae

HOLY WEEK LEAFLETS

A take home flyer with times of all the Holy Week and Easter Ceremonies is available at our parish churches this weekend. Feel free to take a flyer so that you have the information at hand about our Easter Services.

Sr Mary Coloe, pbvm,

on the Gospel of Mark:

When Jesus cries out with the words of the Psalm 21, ‘My God, my God, why have you abandoned me,’ he hears no answer. God is silent. The heavens stay closed and darkness covers the earth.

Mark’s Gospel presents the crucifixion as the apparent triumph of evil over good. Jesus is mocked by some and tortured by others. If Jesus dies, the Gospel seems to say, there is no God.

As Christians, we know that this is not the end of the story, but it would be wrong to hurry through this week and not enter into this dark and fearful place of abandonment.

Many of us know this place. At some time in our life we too have voiced this cry of Jesus and found the heavens silent. This week we are to bring the memory of these times into our prayer with God. For in spite of appearances, in spite of the silence, God is here.

Jesus prays from his ‘heart of darkness’. He speaks out his anguish to his God with words of protest and lament. In his prayer he draws to himself all who protest and lament, all who suffer unjustly, all who die abandoned and reviled.

Pray this cry of Jesus during this week. Let his cry become your cry and his surrender be your surrender
