Less than one per cent of what the world spends every year on weapons is needed to put every child into school by the year 2020. An estimated 40 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, with 3 million deaths in 2016. Every year there are 350500 million cases of malaria, with 1 million fatalities. Water problems affect half of humanity: 1.1 billion people in developing countries have inadequate access to water, and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. 1.8 million children die each year as a result of diarrhoea. And then there are the homeless, and in despair as a result of nature hurling its very worst at humanity, those maimed by war, and fleeing persecution. What are you doing, God? Why can’t you stop it? LET’S TURN THE QUESTION AROUND: If we were God, what would we do? If you saw that 1/10th of the world’s population consumed 9/10th of its resources, what would you do? If you saw that the cost of a missile used in modern warfare ranged between £100,000 and £800,000 but the cost of a well and a generator to serve 6,000 people was £100,000, what would you do? If you saw that the average cost in the UK to replace a toilet was £150 but that the cost of a new toilet in Nigeria is £50 (and that would save lives) what would you do? And that’s the point really. Either God is playing with humanity like a child teasing ants or God has set us free to connect with the Divine spark of compassion within each one of us, looking with new understanding on how we are, all of us, provided for with the gifts of creation, and learn how to share that the balance between the haves and the have-nots might be redressed. Looking at the TV images of flood and war it is easy to feel impotent and disempowered. However, we can each of us do something to redress the balance and watch individual little things become a groundswell of hope. The question is have we the courage to choose to do one thing differently - switch providers, buy fair trade, challenge shops who stock goods made in sweat shops by children, we can all name these things. So - your opportunity to be God - what is it you would like to do to redress the balance? How can the Churches of the Upper Kennet Benefice help? UPPER KENNET NEWS Published by Fyfield, West Overton and East Kennett Parochial Church Council for the Upper Kennet Benefice October 2017

A question I am asked more often than I have hot dinners is ‘If God is a God of love, why does God allow starvation, drought, disease, etc?’ A good question when you consider some facts: out of 2.2 billion children in the world 1 billion live in poverty. 22,000 children die each day. 72 million children were not in school last year; 57 per cent of them were girls. Less than one per cent of what the world spends every year on weapons is needed to put every child into school by the year 2020. An estimated 40 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, with 3 million deaths in 2016. Every year there are 350–500 million cases of malaria, with 1 million fatalities. MONKTON TEAS FOR TOURISTS A huge thanks to all those who supported the two August Teas for

Tourists we had in the Avebury Social Centre by baking, serving,

donating produce or money, running stalls and doing the endless

washing up! Over the 2 days we raised over £1,500 for Monkton

church which was excellent. We had a steady stream of very

contented customers throughout both days. Thank you.

Church Christmas Tree Sale

We welcome you to participate in our third Christmas tree sale to support the Churches of East Kennett, West Overton and Fyfield. The formula of pre-selling trees and the opportunity to select your own tree on the day of the Bazaar proved successful and we will continue with this approach. Trees pre-ordered will qualify for Free Local Delivery on the 9 and 10th of December. We will supply the same premium quality Nordman tree, from the same local supplier and as all of the trees are grown in the UK we therefore can maintain the same competitive prices as last year. The project is part of the PCC initiative to raise funds by offering a service. Look out for details of the Christmas Bazaar at West Overton Church on 9th December 2017 from 10am to 4pm Parochial Church Council

NEWS FROM THE TOWER Service Ringing Times: 1st and 8th October 9.30am – 10.00am 22nd October 5.30pm - 6.00pm. Practice Nights: Tuesdays 7.30 pm - 9.00 pm

We rang for a wedding on 26th August, once again relying on three ringers from elsewhere to make up the numbers. The Peal attempt on 14th September was to celebrate the 135th Anniversary of the formation of the Salisbury Diocesan Guild of Ringers, on 14th September, 1882. The Guild takes in most of Wiltshire and all of Dorset. After more than two hours of ringing someone went wrong and unfortunately they lost the peal about ten minutes before the end. We have two more recruits, one a complete beginner and one a returning ringer, with yet another possible ringer on the horizon so we have been very lucky this year. The 2nd of 3 Training mornings will be held on Saturday, 28th October from10am to 12noon. Avebury will host the Branch meeting on 14th October. Ringing will be from 3pm to 4.30pm, a service from 4.30pm to 5pm, a Bring and Share tea in the church, followed by A Quarterly Business Meeting and further ringing. There will be a Quarter Peal attempt on Saturday, 4th November, starting at 11.30am.

Eileen Fortune Eileen Fortune was 90 when she died. An only child, after her parents Emily and Reg's death she continued to lived in the bungalow at Clatford which they built just after the war. She went to the Grammar School at the bottom of the Parade and became life-long friends with Eileen Ward, nee Calvert. She was a bridesmaid at Eileen and Leslie's wedding in 1951. She went to Salisbury Teacher Training College and was appointed to Lockeridge School in 1947, staying in the same post for 40 years. She taught the 5 to 7 year olds but helped older children with music and needlework. Her firm but gentle teaching stile was very much appreciated by parents and children, and by me when I did two weeks school practice in her class in 1953. She cycled to Lockeridge until the great day when she passed her driving test. She gave her L plates to two Clatford boys probably hoping to encourage them to drive. She attended St George's regularly until her health failed.

Who are you today? Mother, husband, grandmother, brother?

Teacher, office manager, student, electrician? If you are looking after someone who couldn’t always manage without your help: someone with a physical disability, long term health condition, mental health issue or a problem

with substance misuse you may also be a carer.

Juggling a caring role around work, studying, seeing friends or spending time with other family members can be challenging. And sometimes it can feel lonely.

An Open Letter The editor has received this open letter from one of our long standing residents. I am writing this letter to express my concerns about the theft of flowers from the grave of Brian Drage in West Overton Churchyard. On three occasions flowers have been stolen from my father’s grave. The latest being the theft of a pot of violas which has happened in early September. The flowers have been placed on the grave in remembrance of a much-loved Husband, Father and Grampy. It is extremely upsetting to find that our floral tributes have been removed. This is now the only way in which we can show our feelings and even this has been taken away. If whoever is doing this has a conscience then I hope this letter serves its purpose and you feel as despicable as the act of theft you have carried out. Consider how you would feel if this happened to you? Consider if this small act of remembrance was taken from you? I consider the local community to be kind and caring and really hope that this is not being carried out by anyone from the local area. It is extremely sad to know that someone would behave in such a contemptable, weak and shameful manner. If anyone has any comments on this issue please email me at: [email protected]

Marlborough and District Embroiderers Guild

Amanda Clayton started her talk for our September meeting by explaining that she had come from a large family and her Aunt Kate taught her to crochet. Anwar Shemza, a teacher at her school and an artist in his own right, influenced and encouraged Mandy greatly. She went on to teach on the Foundation course at Stafford and retired four years ago.

Mandy draws and paints in colour but her actual work is hand stitching using neutral threads on transparent fabrics. She amused us greatly by chatting to members before and after the talk stitching all the time.

The next meeting of Marlborough & District Embroiderers Guild will be on Monday 2 October 2017 at the Kennet Valley Hall, Lockeridge. The speaker will be Meike Laurenson and her talk will be entitled “Me and My Hats”. Doors open at 13.30 for a 14.00 start. All are welcome and if you have any queries please contact 01249 750865. Avebury and District WI

The WI enjoyed two outings over the summer months - one to Great Chalfield Manor and one to the Bath Aqua Glass workshop. Although the June weather wasn't the best, members did enjoy the gardens and tours of the house. At Bath Aqua Glass in July nine of those attending were instructed in the art of glass blowing, producing glass baubles that were completed and sent to them after their visit.

Our new programme started on 14th September with Cherry Hubbard coming to speak to us about Roman Gardens. She brought an array of items that the Romans would have used, some of which are familiar to us today (seedling waterer) and some not so much (dormouse storage jar, anyone?). There are many things that the Romans didn't have that we strongly associate with the Italian diet today such as tomatoes which didn't arrive from the New World until the16th century. The Romans used many natural fibres and dyes to make their clothing and Cherry had samples of the wide array of colours that can be obtained from herbs and flowers. The usual tea followed but Cherry wasn't required to judge our competition this month as there were only a single item in each category!

Our next meeting is on 12th October, in the Social Centre, and our speaker is Stephen Wells, a local member of the Magic Circle.

Avebury Community Shop Shop Phone Number:

01672 539200

Summer opening hours until 31st October:

Monday- Saturday 9am - 5pm, Sundays & Bank Holidays 10.30am – 4.30pm

As the days get darker don’t forget that a trip to your community shop will save you petrol and time. Volunteer News Last week we had our volunteer party

which was a great opportunity for volunteers to socialise and enjoy delicious food and drink. Thank you so much to Jayne Telling for organising this.

Product News We have a fantastic stock of products including meat from Sumblers Butchers in Marlborough and several types of delicious local cheeses as well as beer from Ramsbury brewery and local honey and honey fudge. We have recently started stocking individual cheesecakes which are proving to be very popular.

Volunteer Appeal Please could you consider volunteering in your Community Shop?

Full training will be given. We need volunteer shop assistants, but if you don’t want to be in the public eye there are lots of other things you could do to help such as baking, helping with deliveries or our collection of supplies. We don’t expect you to volunteer at the same time every week unless you want to. If you can only help occasionally we would also be grateful for this. Any help however small is gratefully received. If you think you would like to volunteer, even for an hour or two, just to help out, just call Lyn, Lynda or Louise at the shop on 01672 539200. We promise tea, biscuits and friendship.

Local Deliveries Please don’t forget that we can deliver to you if you are unable to come into the shop. Just give us a ring on the number at the top of this article.

Avebury Parish Council

Headlines from Avebury Parish Council’s meeting in

September 2017 Planning: We decided to support without conditions applications to rebuild part of a chimney at 6 Green Street, works to fell three conifers at High Trees, Bray Street and works to reduce branches of a Yew tree at The Old Vicarage in the High Street. We also decided to offer no further comments on a redevelopment scheme at Manor Farm, Winterbourne Monkton. Housing Needs Survey: We have agreed final amendments to the draft report on housing needs. Wiltshire Council will shortly be sending us the final version and we will be discussing how to take its recommendations forward at our next meeting. National Trust: we noted the Trust’s update which can be found in the minutes of our meeting on our website. We also had a closed session to review dialogue and progress with the NT, the future of the Chapel in Green Street and improving the opening hours of the Coach House toilets.

Transport Group: Mike Bedford and Jon Campbell are sending round a survey on speeding and the need for double yellow lines in Trusloe. The Transport Group is working on a preliminary draft list of pros and cons for and against closing The Avenue and will then be consulting all in the Parish to get everyone’s views. The Group is pressing for the resurfacing of footpath 22 (between Church Walk and Bray Street) to be done this year and is working with the National Trust on coach parking in the High Street. The road surface on the A4 just west of Beckhampton roundabout should be improved in the near future as part of a Wiltshire Council contract to resurface the A4 either side of Silbury Hill. Leasing the Sports-field: The Parish Council currently leases the Sports-field from the National Trust, and Avebury Community Sports and Recreation Committee (ACSReC) manages it on a daily basis as a sub-committee of the PC. ACSReC needs to raise funds for the pavilion and the field, but a number of potential funders will not provide grants and other finance if the Parish Council is the tenant. Avebury Sports and Social Club (ASSC), that owns the

Club building on the corner by the Avenue junction, can however access a wide spectrum of funds and we therefore discussed a proposal that ASSC should in future lease the Sports-field from the Trust and manage it instead of the PC. Under the scheme, all local people would continue to be able to use the Sports-field as at present and existing users will be represented on the new management body. We noted that ASSC is well supported with about 150 members and we are therefore currently looking into some details before moving forward with the idea at our next meeting in October. In the meantime, notices have gone up on our noticeboards, and if you have any views you would like the PC to consider, could you please contact Liz, our Clerk, by 3 October. Defibrillator for Avebury Trusloe: we are researching the best location for a defibrillator in Trusloe before our next meeting in October. External audit: Grant Thornton has given the Parish a clean audit report. Next Parish Council meeting: 7.30pm on Tuesday 3 October at the Social Centre Parish Clerk: Liz Moore (861424) and [email protected]

Sun 05 November Going In Style

Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, three lifelong pals (Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin) risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money. If your audience enjoyed The Love Punch and Golden Years, this is one to choose! “This remake plays it safer than its source material. And yet, its stars are such pros, they’re so enormously charismatic and have such lovely chemistry with each other, it’s hard not to be charmed by their mere presence on screen. Caine, Freeman and Arkin—Oscar winners, all—know exactly what do to and how much of it to do, both individually and as an ensemble, every time. They are delightful company.” RogerEbert.com Sun 03 December Churchill

A ticking-clock thriller following Winston Churchill in the 96 hours before D-Day. Starring Brian Cox, with Miranda Richardson as his wife Clemmie. “Bolstered by clear-cut direction from Teplitzky, and with excitingly staged disputes over the controversial operation at hand, Churchill hits all the right notes, bringing a slice of history to life in its most palatable and entertaining form.” Radio Times.

REFUGEES AND FORCED MIGRATION

There have been two recent articles in Tower and Town as well as a recent Panorama programme about refugee and forced migration issues. To understand these better Marlborough Quakers will be hosting an open meeting on

The Parade, Marlborough, SN8 1NE

Tea will be available at 4.30pm

and the meeting will start at 5.00pm, ending around 6.15pm

The chief purpose is to help us know better what is being done, in our names as citizens, to deal with the difficult and complex problems of those forced away from their homelands. The principal speaker will be Dr Nick Maurice who has first-hand experience of what goes on as well as information about present efforts to help resolve the problems.
