Big Names for the Scone Cup Carnival By Laura Sykes The 2013 Scone Cup Carnival looks set to feature some of the most exciting names as trainers prepare for the two- day event. Tony McEvoy, a small scale but big name racehorse trainer who recently purchased forty eight stables adjacent to the Hawkesbury racecourse, is likely to be one of many national trainers whose horses will be vying for a share of the $2million in prizemoney up for grabs at Scone on May 17 and 18. Peter Snowden, a former scone jockey and trainer, is another name on the list of high-end trainers adding to the quality of runners at Scone. Horse Festival News UpdateSuch a range of events and exhibitions catering from those who prefer serious competition to those who just want to party – such a wonderful festival!

Les Bailey, our VIP for 2013 led the parade with a mounted police escort, followed by previous VIPs on horseback and other VIPs chaperoned in cars from Strathearn. Once again the parade was an amazing display of creativity and hard work. A huge thank you to the organisers and the announcers. Thank you also to the parents and grandparents who created the fabulous costumes – Shakespearean

gentlemen, Plantagenet ladies, knights in shining amour, creatures from the animal kingdom and the characters from the float with the banner ‘May the horse be with you’!

The market stalls in Hill Street held an amazing array of gifts and temptations and the food stalls at the fete catered for the thousands of visitors.

The rodeo drew a great crowd and for those who preferred something different – horseball and equestrian vaulting entertained the spectators. A very successful weekend of polo was held at Gundy with more polo planned for this weekend.

Excitement is building in anticipation of the two-day racing carnival – the biggest country race meeting in Australia!

Worth watching is the ‘Racehorse Retraining Demonstration’ to be held at 10am at White Park this Saturday morning.

The finalé of the festival is the ‘Picnic and Fireworks’ at Lake Glenbawn on Sunday afternoon. There will be food, market stalls and entertainment. Come and celebrate the conclusion of this fabulous community festival.

Experience Piano Music of the Great Composers with one of the World’s BestThe Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music is excited to bring one of the world’s most impressive and travelled concert pianists, Roman Rudnytsky, to Muswellbrook for a recital on Sunday 2 June as part of its 2013 Visiting Artists Series funded by Arts NSW.Roman Rudnytsky is an American concert pianist of Ukrainian background who has performed for many years in over ninety five countries. He has brought the pleasure of classical music to audiences throughout the world, from some of the largest concert halls in capital cities as well as to small towns that are away from the musical mainstream and seldom experience this type of music in live performance.

A graduate of the famous Juilliard School in New York, Roman Rudnytsky started the study of piano at age four and gave his first recital at age seven. He is a prize winner of ten piano competitions - both national and international. In addition to his many recitals, Roman has been soloist with many orchestras around the world, playing with them over forty five different works for piano and orchestra.

Adam Wills, Director of the UHCM, said, “It is such a pleasure to be able to bring a brilliant international concert pianist, like Roman Rudnytsky, to the Upper Hunter to perform for local residents as part of our Visiting Artists Series. We’re very lucky to have Roman perform for us. I encourage everyone to book their seats soon, as there is only one opportunity to see him perform while he’s in Muswellbrook and seating is limited in our hall”.

Parliament of NSW Aboriginal Art Prize 2012This month, Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre will play host to Australia’s richest combined Aboriginal Art Prize as the 2012 Parliament of New South Wales Aboriginal Art Prize, rolls into town. Over thirty unique works by contemporary Aboriginal artists will be on display, in a free public exhibition that is one of the most compelling and thought-provoking we have seen in recent years.Opening at 6pm on 18 May 2013 the exhibition will be on display until 14 July 2013. Paints, inks, pencils, fabrics, paper, carvings, sculptures and photography are used to weave narratives from the natural world, and to tell stories designed to confront contemporary issues. Nicole Foreshew’s dark photographic work Belong to all yet none explores issues of identity and isolation; Black Douglas’s (Adam Hills) Really Bin ignites many powerful and confronting emotions; Leonie Binge’s embossed paper work Tracks #2 evokes a river in full flow whilst Albert ‘Digby’ Moran’s painting of Starlight captures the simple pleasures the artist takes in lying around a campfire gazing at the stars.

Entry is FREE and it truly is a must see for anyone with an interest in art, culture and contemporary Aboriginal expression. The Parliament of New South Wales Aboriginal Art Prize is annual prize with a combined value of more than $160,000 (including a $40,000 main prize and $120,000 in scholarships offered through the College of Fine Arts, UNSW).

The annual awards and exhibition are made possible through a partnership between the Parliament of NSW, Campbelltown Arts, the NSW Government (through Arts NSW), COFA and Coal & Allied.

Lovedale Long Lunch This Weekend20th Anniversary Extravaganza. The Lovedale Long Lunch is celebrating its 20th Anniversary in this weekend 18 and 19 May, and no doubt there are fun and exciting times ahead. As part of the celebrations, Saturday packages will include re-admission on Sunday so patrons can gear up for an entire weekend of fine wine, gourmet food and live entertainment across seven of Lovedale’s best wineries.Due to the popularity and dramatic growth of the event, a number of broad event changes were implemented in 2012 to improve the safety and enjoyment of visitors. The transformation was a great success as hosting wineries, authorities and patrons alike were delighted with the outcome; crowds were well behaved, queues were shorter and the food and wine experience was unsurpassed by any other like festival.

Online ticket sales have now closed, however tickets are available at any participating cellar door. Tickets will also be available for purchase on the day for groups of less than twenty people.

Saturday Entry Package - $85: Includes 2 meal tickets, 1 dessert/cheese ticket,1 polycarbonate tasting glass, 10 tasting tokens and re-admission on Sunday. Sunday Entry Package One - $65: Includes 1 meal ticket, 1 dessert/cheese ticket,1 polycarbonate tasting glass and 5 tasting tokens. Arthritis In Our Pets By Dr Peta Gay Railton

As the weather cools down rapidly, we are reminded that winter is well and truly on its way. One of the most common problems we see in cats and dogs over winter is an increase in arthritic aches and pains.

Arthritis can have many causes and can be seen in animals of any age. While it can be immune based, infectious, or trauma related, one of the most common types of arthritis we see is osteo-arthritis, or degenerative joint disease. This occurs when the cartilage is damaged or worn away - leading to less cushioning and shock absorption within joints, and when joint fluid becomes thinner and less lubricating. This leads to less smooth movement and bending of joints and eventually can lead to bone grating on bone and severe pain and inflammation.

As a pet owner we become quite good at reading non-verbal cues from our pets. The cat is being super friendly - it probably wants dinner. The dog is running mad in the yard - it probably wants to go for a run at the park. But sometimes the signs are more subtle. Things that we often ascribe to ‘just getting older’ may in fact be signs of pain or discomfort that we can help with.

Some signs of arthritis or pain in our pets include:

- Stiffness or slowness in rising from lying down, especially first thing in the mornings

- Lameness or stiffness in one leg in particular or difficulty standing for prolonged periods

- Sleeping more and reluctant to interact with people and animals

- Weight gain and disinterest in walks or activity

- Changes in behaviour - grumpy, possibly

aggressive when touched, less affectionate

- Reluctant to jump into the car, cats may be reluctant to jump onto furniture or to get in and out of the litter tray

If you think that your pet is showing any of the symptoms above, especially if they are seven years or older, there are many ways you and your vet can make your friend more comfortable. There are five main areas to think about.

1) Isolate the problem. Your vet can perform a thorough physical exam, and may recommend x-rays to diagnose the problem.

2) Pain relief. Whether it is post surgery, ‘wear and tear’ from old age or trauma related, arthritis hurts. Pain relief comes in many forms, most commonly:

- Non steroidal anti inflammatories

- Synovan/cartrophen injections

- Joint supplements

- Acupuncture

- Stem cell therapy

3) Weight management - simply put, if an animal is overweight, their joints are forced to carry more weight than they are designed to. This increases the speed at which the joint is worn and damaged and makes getting around their daily activities twice as hard as it should be. Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial in your pet’s health and longevity.

4) Exercise - this is partly linked to weight management. In a young dog or cat this involves running, games, and long walks off the lead. In middle aged and older animals it is important to maintain the exercise regime, but modify it to suit their needs

5) Environment - this is easily achieved with bedding that is protected from the wind and rain, off the cold ground, soft and warm. It also needs to be easily accessed.

Arthritis in older pets is one of the many important topics we will be discussing at our “geriatrics night’ which will be held at the Muswellbrook clinic on Thursday 23 May from 6.30pm – 8.00pm. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn what signs to look out for in your middle aged or older pet to ensure you have them happy and healthy family members for as long as possible.

Successful 2013 Tocal Field Days“Fine, sunny weather and great community support saw a very successful Tocal Field Days with crowds out in force to enjoy a day in the country. Attendance was up on last year’s with a total of 24,000 people attending the event. It is wonderful to have so many people visit Tocal”, Dr Cameron Archer, Chair, Tocal Field Day’s Association said. The event was made up of over four hundred exhibitors and from all reports sales were strong and interest in everything agriculture was also strong.

The awards are to encourage excellence in presentation and the judges commented on the high standard of presentations.

Tocal Field Days aim to provide opportunities for people to learn about farming and related activities. The demonstration and talks program in a wide range of locations provide many opportunities to understand farming techniques and practices.

“The Tocal Field Days are strongly supported by the farm machinery sector and there are plenty of choices for visitors to purchase and compare prices on equipment from the humblest of ride-on lawn mowers to some of the largest tractors you would want to use on a Hunter Valley farm”, Dr Archer said.

The post splitting competition was a new event for this years Field Days and attracted a large crowd. Champion post splitters from the district and beyond demonstrated their expertise.

“The Field Days is committed to the importance of youth in the future of agriculture. Virtually all Tocal’s students work as paid assistants at the Field Days and now the event is also free for children being accompanied by adults. We think it is important that young people learn as much about farming and food production as they can”, Dr Archer said.

integratedliving Wins Coveted State Award integratedliving Australia Ltd has been awarded the Aged & Community Services Association of NSW & ACT Incorporated (ACS) State Award for Excellence. The Award recognises a provider organisation that demonstrates special or unique leadership, innovation and excellence to the sector. ACS is the leading peak organisation for aged care services, community care services and retirement villages in NSW and ACT representing more then three hundred organisations. integratedliving provides a diverse range of specialist care services; employs four hundred and twenty staff and is supported by three hundred volunteers. The company operates twenty one offices across seven rural and regional areas in New South Wales, four rural regions in Queensland and two rural regions in Victoria. Its headquarters and a respite house used to provide direct services are based in Muswellbrook.

“We are particularly proud of integratedliving’s quality of care and customer service,” said company Chief Executive Officer, Catherine Daley. “Our staff are extremely committed and we have strong employee retention. We are also very open to scrutiny so are externally certified against a range of professional standards and an extensive customer satisfaction feedback processes. We are also involved in a number of key research partnerships and funded research projects.”

The aged care sector faces many challenges: consolidation, increased regulation, legislative changes and fixed income. In presenting the award at a function in Sydney earlier this week, Mr John Ireland, retired CEO of Southern Cross Care NSW & ACT, praised integratedliving’s positive responses to these challenges.

“Amalgamations are a key way to ensure services to rural communities are maintained when smaller organisations find the increasing requirements too onerous,” said Ms Daley. “By taking a lead role in managing amalgamations integratedliving has ensured that consumers continue to have the very best of individual care within their communities, and that staff are retained within the sector.”

In the same week that integratedliving received the ACS Award for Excellence the federal government announced that following a competitive national process integratedliving will be one of nine organisations across Australia that will share in a total of $20.3 million of government funding to trial new methods of health care delivery using the high-speed National Broadband Network (NBN). The Project will be funded by the Department of Health. Late last year integratedliving also received funding from the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FAHCSIA) for two National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Practical Design Fund projects involving extensive consultations with consumers, with presentations and mentoring to other community groups and development of how to guides.

Take a BYG SWIG of this Band, Folks By Laura Sykes

The best thing anyone can say to Terry, Guy, Stuart or Susan from Moonan is ‘I haven’t danced like that in thirty years…’It’s something that makes the group, who have been performing at functions, pubs and other places for over ten years now, particularly proud.

BYG SWIG, as the foursome is known, have lived in the area all their lives, with the exception of Susan who became a local by default when she married Guy. Originally just getting together for a bit of fun, the band began by playing casual gigs at birthday parties and special occasions, however it wasn’t long until local interest began to rise and BYG SWIG began to be requested for private functions. “We realised that we had to take a more serious approach, buying a PA and upgrading other equipment,” says Susan.

The group has a widely ranging repertoire to choose from. “We play to a wide variety of audiences, and we try to match our playlist with the function. On an average night, we start off with a fairly laid back mix of relaxing songs, before gradually increasing the energy and pace in the fi nal two sets,” says Susan, who openly admits that the band always tries to ‘please everyone’.

BYG SWIG plays a mix of covers with their original songs, and released their debut album ‘Where We Are’ in 2012, which tells the stories of the local people and places the group members have known throughout their lives, and was received with great enthusiasm. “We held the CD launch, appropriately, at the Victoria Hotel at Moonan Flat, which was very strongly supported by the greater community and the ABC.”

In 2011, Susan entered the group in the ‘Tooheys New Great Australian Pub Songwriter’s Competition’, a title which BYG SWIG then won after travelling to Tamworth and playing live during the Tamworth Country Music Festival, much to the delight of both the band and the wider local community alike.

And while touring isn’t an option on the cards just yet, according to Susan, the group has some big things in store. “We are currently in the process of recording our fi rst video clip, with the aim of promoting a single on CMC; our songs are on itunes and we’re in demand as a party and event band and take on as many bookings as our other commitments allow. We enjoy engaging with the audience and try to ensure that everyone has a good time - we just try to have fun at gigs and sell CD’s when we can. That’s the reason we do what we do.”
