Plastic polymers (recycled or virgin)

> PVC: Strong and stiff but brittle. Considered un-ecological as toxic fumes are produced when disposed of. (incineration)

> Polypropylene - PP: High performance thermoplastic polymer with a wide range of properties.

> Polyethylene - PE: Softer, but readily available also from recycled waste: e.g. milk bottles

High performance thermoplastic material with a wide range of properties.

PP can easily be modified by compounding to improve performance: e.g. strength, stiffness, impact resistance.

Excellent chemical resistance and low water absorption.

In outdoor applications PP needs to be protected against UV radiation.

Most common plastic in the world, therefore also readily available as recycled.

Numerous different types of PE are used in different applications. Main application packaging. PE based WPC is also used a lot in decking and fencing.

Mechanically inferior to PP, but can be modified by compounding to improve properties.

Needs to be protected against UV radiation with stabilizers.

Plastic Polymers used in composites

Widely used in construction, especially pipe and profile extrusion to replace traditional materials: copper, iron and wood.

In its rigid form PVC is hard and stiff, but brittle.

Can be made soft and flexible with plasticizers (e.g. vinyl leather).

Very good fire resistance, but when it decomposes at high temperatures toxic and aggressive fumes are released.

UPM ProFi deckings use only high impact resistant polymers

• UPM ProFi deckings have been designed to retain good

impact resistance even in the coldest of winters

• WPC decking made with PVC can become brittle and weak in the cold

• Some manufacturers try to save costs by having a very high fiber content (over 60%), which may also result in the decking being brittle and susceptible to moisture absorption.
