Directions—(Q. 46 to 50) Read the passagebelow, and answer the questions that follow basedon your understanding of the passage.
The following are the areas where mass mediaresearchers might encounter ethical dilemmas :
(i) Voluntary participation and informedconsent; (ii) concealment and deception; and (iii)protection of privacy. All of these general ethicalconcerns apply to advertising research also. Inaddition, there are some ethical concerns that areunique to this area. Two of the most controversialare research about advertising to children and‘push-polling’.
A tremendous amount of advertising isdirected towards children. Not surprisingly, muchadvertising research is conducted with children. Isit ethical to conduct research that uncovers newways of making advertising effective with thisgroup ? Many social critics argue that children area vulnerable audience and should be shielded fromall forms of advertising. These same people wouldargue that research that helps advertisers furthermanipulate this group is not ethical. In 1999, agroup of psychologists called on The AmericanPsychological Association to restrict the use ofpsychological research designed to help sell toys, snacks, video games and other products to bids.
The second area, ‘push-polling’, often cropsup in political campaigns. At its worst, push-polling involves a bogus public opinion poll putinto the field by candidate A in an attempt tospread dirt about candidate B. The push pollwould contain negative and often incorrectinformation about candidate B designed to pushthe voters away from supporting him or her. Most
researchers would condemn this form of polling asunethical. The line becomes less clear, however,in other situations. When constructing an adcampaign for a candidate, it is often helpful toknow what negatives about the opponent shouldbe stressed. Some legitimate polling might includeinformation that might have negative conno-tations, (e.g., “Are you aware that candidate B hasbeen twice divorced ?”). The appropriate amountof negative items to include can be a difficultethical problem.
46. One of the controversial research aboutadvertising on children is—
(A) Advertising help manipulating them
(B) Selling of Food
(C) Selling of Clothes
(D) Push Polling
47. A group of psychologists told the AmericanPsychological Association to—
(A) Conduct psychological research more
(B) Restrict psychological research onchildren
(C) ban all kinds of research
(D) conduct only analytical research
48. The critics do not approve research onchildren to find out the impact is becausethey—
(A) are affected negatively psychologically
(B) do not have money
(C) become consumerists
(D) shun away from studies
49. ‘Push Polling’ involves—
(A) positive aspects of someone
(B) negative aspects of someone
(C) how to be neutral about someone
(D) how to fight with candidates
50. One dilemma that researchers face whiledesigning a research project for children is—
(A) the number of children to be included
(B) the number of children to be eliminated
(C) the appropriate amount of negativemessages to be included
(D) the appropriate amount of positivemessages to be included

Answers with Explanations1. (A) The NRS is a survey on all media, but
especially the print medium, conducted by theNational Readership Survey Council. Thisbody consists of members from the INS(Indian Newspaper Society), AAAI (Adver-tising Associations of India) and ABC (AuditBureau of Circulation). NRS gives infor-mation on the macro parameters like the reachof each medium among various audiencesdefined demographically. It also gives infor-mation on the duplication between media, aswell as between vehicles within the samemedium. For publications, one gets thenumber of readers, type of readers in demo-graphic terms (NRS defines readers by sex, age, income, socio-economic class, occupa-tion, education, geographical location), spreadof these readers, and lifestyle parameters suchas product ownership and consumptionpatterns.
2. (B) One presumed goal of sensationalreporting is to increase or sustain viewershipor readership, from which media outlets canprice their advertising higher to increase theirprofits based on higher numbers of viewersand/ or readers. Sometimes this can lead to alesser focus on objective journalism in favourof a profit motive, in which editorial choicesare based upon sensational stories andpresentations to increase advertising revenue.Additionally, advertisers tend to have apreference for their products or services to bereported positively in mass media, which cancontribute to bias in news reporting in favourof media outlets protecting their profits andrevenues, rather than reporting objectivelyabout stated products and services.
3. (D)
4. (B) Skype is a proprietary voice over InternetProtocol service and software applicationoriginally created by Niklas Zennstrom andJanus Friis, and owned by Microsoft since2011.

6. (C) Gravure is a type of intaglio printingprocess; that is, it involves engraving theimage onto an image carrier. In gravureprinting, the image is engraved onto acylinder because, like offset printing and
flexography, it uses a rotary printing press.Once a staple of newspaper photo feature, therotogravure process is still used for com-mercial printing of magazines, postcards, andcorrugated (cardboard) product packaging.
7. (D) An embargo is the partial or completeprohibition of commerce and trade with aparticular country, in order to isolate it.Embargoes are considered strong diplomaticmeasures imposed in an effort, by theimposing country, to elicit a given national-interest result from the country on which it isimposed.
8. (A) A camera dolly is a specialized piece offilmmaking and television production equip-ment designed to create smooth cameramovements (cinematic techniques). Thecamera is mounted to the dolly and thecamera operator and focuses puller or cameraassistant, usually ride on the dolly to operatethe camera. 9. (A) These are colours that cannot be createdthrough the mixing of other colours. They arecolours in their own right. The three primarycolours can be seen below RED-YELLOW-BLUE.
10. (A) In a famous 1921 essay marking theManchester Guardian’s centenary (at whichtime he had served nearly fifty years aseditor), C. P. Scott put down his opinions onthe role of the newspaper. He argued that the‘primary office’ of a newspaper is accuratenews reporting : in his words, ‘comment isfree, but facts are sacred’. Even editorialcomment has its responsbilities : ‘It is well tobe frank; it is even better to be fair’. Anewspaper should have a ‘soul of its own’,with staff motivated by a ‘common ideal’ :although the business side of a newspapermust be competent, if it becomes dominantthe paper will face ‘distressing consequences’.
11. (C)12. (A) Many Voices One World, also known as
the MacBride report, was a 1980 UNESCOpublication written by the InternationalCommission for the Study of Communi-cation Problems, chaired by Irish NobelLaureate Sean MacBride. Its aim was toanalyze communication problems in modernsocieties, particulary relating to mass media
