Prof. Brigida M. Octavio, Vice President for Academic Affairs, joined UPH in 2006. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of the Philippines, and her Master’s and Ph.D degrees from the University of Illinois, USA. She had been a faculty member at the Asian Institute of Management and Ateneo de Manila University (Philippines), University Sains Malaysia, National Economics University (Vietnam), and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

GRADUATE SCHOOL

In 2008, the Graduate School aimed at re-energizing itself by engaging in more aggressive activities to improve its academic standards, develop strategic plans, increase its visibility, highlight its innovative teaching methods, and actively promote its academic competence.

Evaluation of faculty members by the students was thoroughly implemented in all study programs. In addition to the closed-type of questionnaires that allowed single-choice answers, students were asked open-ended questions that elicited broad responses to teaching and learning issues. The results of the evaluations were actually used as a basis for hiring decisions in the following semester, thereby improving the quality of the school’s pool of lecturers. Further, the minimum undergraduate GPA requirement for its applicants was increased to 2.5. Minimum TOEFL requirements are 450 in the Master’s programs, and 500 in the Doctoral programs.

Double degree programs were started. The Management program established a double degree arrangement with the International Hotel Management Institute (IHMI), Switzerland, wherein students receive an UPH MM and an IHMI MBA in International Hospitality Management. The Graduate School also started a double master’s degreein Management and Industrial Engineering, which can be completed in a minimum of two years.

For the first time, telelectures had been successfully implemented as an innovative method, both for classroom use and for public seminars. The telelecture of Mr. Marpaung was broadcasted directly from Enschede, Netherlands to the Electrical Engineering students in Karawaci and Slipi, Jakarta through UPH’s modern teleconference facilities. Likewise, one of the sessions in the seminar on Photonics was delivered via teleconference mode. Another use of technology is the online admissions system, which had been developed to provide better services to applicants.

Each faculty actively prepared strategic plans for the next 3 years. Heads of study programs developed their own marketing plans, in order to clearly articulate their program’s distinctive competence and develop ways to promote their distinctiveness. As many as twelve high-impact public seminars were successfully held throughout the year, dealing with current issues such as “Human Rights Education: Provision, Prospects and Challenges in Our Society”, “Challenges of the Legal Profession in a Corrupt Society,” and “Modern Quality Management for Organizational Performance Excellence”.

An outstanding achievement was shown by three students at the Master in Management program. Felix Fabianto, Herdi Sundjaja, and Sony won third place in the 1st Master Journey in Management, a competition in business planning organized by the Management Research Center of the Graduate School of Management, Universitas Indonesia. The UPH team bested other graduate student teams from three top universities in the country.

FIVE CORE DIVISIONS WITHIN MRINMolecular Epidemiology DivisionThe Molecular Epidemiology Division whose purpose is to study the association for the genetic variations of virus, the mutation of oncogenes or the tumor suppression genes and cancer development-towards preventing the progress of carcinogenesis.

Proteomic DivisionThe Proteomic Division which develops and applies proteomic-based technology for the identification of differentially or modified proteins that can serve as biomarkers for the diagnosis of cancer.

Immunology DivisionThe Immunology Division seeks to understand the nature of tumor antigens including their optimal presentation and the regulatory mechanism that govern the immune system. The purpose is to develop innovative immunotherapy intervention strategies for the treatment of cancer.

SNP DivisionThe SNP Division wishes to develop a generic screen for cancer predisposition that can be utilized as an early diagnostic tool and provide an effective method of improving the outcome of cancer treatment by associating Singly Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SPNs) in genes that are linked with cancer progression.

Cloning DivisionThe Cloning Division supports the other divisions, in respect to any gene of interest, by isolating defined DNA sequences, obtaining multiple copies of it in vivo, so that the sequence may be expressed in a particular host system.

Universitas Pelita Harapan Medical Sciences Group (UPHMS) was formally established in July 2006 through a collaboration between Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), Siloam Hospitals Group (SHG) and the Mochtar Riady institute for Nanotechnology (MRIN). The mandate of UPHMS is to coordinate, integrate and synergize various life sciences, teaching and research programs for the Faculty of Medicine and other Health Care programs such as Nursing, Biology and affiliated institutions such as National University of Singapore (NUS) and Shanghai Jiaotong Medical University.

UPMS prepares excellent health care professionals and scientists committed to high ethical and professional standards, lifelong learning, and skill advancement in health care for the country. At the same time UPHMS provides comprehensive nationally and internationally recognized health care in many specialties and disciplines for the country.

The main focus of research will be on public health, particularly cancer studies. Therefore, the UPH Faculty of Medicine will establish a postgraduate program in Oncology. UPH students will have opportunity to work in MRIN and to use an updated genomic approach in order to understand cancer cell development and the relationship between personal gene expression patterns for clinical diagnosis and treatment.
