In-Place:• Upgrades over your existing EPM server footprint• Reuses all servers in current version of Hyperion including RDBMS servers• In theory, will require less time• Will carry forward any issues with your existing server footprint
Out-of-Place:• Requires new set of servers• “freshens up” your EPM installation• In theory, will require more time• Can correct any issues with your existing server footprint
In-Place vs Out-of-Place
Upgrade Example – Retail
• Leading multinational food manufacturer with products sold in over 100countries.
• $1 billion in revenue• 6,500 employees• Strong consumer bases in Europe, North America, the Middle East,
Africa, Asia and Australia.
Upgrade Example – Retail• 100 users (40% estimated concurrency) - HFM and FR• HFM – 2 main apps• 6 month upgrade project (4 weeks infra upgrade effort with additional
support on going)• Upgrade from 11.1.1.1 (with interim step to 11.1.2.2)• Out of place upgrade including 11.1.2.2 stage• Hosted environment (Off-prem)
Upgrade Example - Manufacturing• International company that develops, manufactures and markets
products and services for environmental and industrial measurement.• $350 million annual revenue• 1,500 employees
Upgrade Example - Manufacturing• 2 applications for HFM, 2 for FDM• 50 users• In-place upgrade from 11.1.2.2• Very smooth transition• 2 week work effort
Lessons Learned• Issues with application may cause errors during upgrade process (i.e.
multiple dimension lists, bad journal templates, invalid metadata inEPMA, etc.)
• Plan how you’re going to sync metadata and data during project• Are there any intermediate steps (11.1.1.3 -> ??? -> 11.1.2.3) ?• Unpatched source systems may produce buggy upgrades
Recommendations• Deploy Smart View (and other client tools) ahead of time• Understand the situation of 3rd party apps such as Microsoft Office and
Internet Explorer.• What versions are you on?• Are there any plans to roll out a new version soon or during your upgrade project
• Make sure business is aware of training requirements if upgrading from aversion earlier than 11.1.2.2
• Take a second look at introducing integration apps i.e. EPMA, DRM, FDMEE.• Determine if you are going to introduce some application improvements
during the upgrade ahead of time.• Will extended upgrade timeline so need to determine if there is enough time and
resources available
Recommendations• Determine if you need to introduce a new application or at least get it
installed for evaluation purposes (ie. Tax Provision, Strategic Finance, etc.)
• Upgrade is a good time to evaluate a hosting solution• Upgrade is a good time to re-evaluate your current support policies and
procedures• Have a good plan of attack for servicing your international users i.e.
performance design etc.
