ion PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Surgery Updates in General Surgery Symposium will be held Saturday, December 7, 2019, in the GMS 1097 Classroom in the Gehl-Mulva Science Center (MCW-Green Bay).

DIRECTIONS AND PARKING MCW-Green Bay is located in the Gehl-Mulva Science Center (161 Reid Street in DePere; or #7 on the St. Norbert College map linked below). Please feel free to park in a MCW visitor space in Lot P2. Map available online at www.snc.edu/about/docs/campusmap.pdf. The entrance to MCW is in the one-story section of the building on the southeast corner with “MCW-Green Bay” above the office entrance.

PURPOSE The aim of the symposium is to familiarize the audience with the current status and future directions of treatments for morbid obesity, diverticulitis, gastroparesis, chronic groin pain, hernias, and intraoperative bleeding. The diagnostic and treatment approaches to these conditions continue to evolve at a rapid pace. For bariatric surgery, our understanding of the mechanisms behind weight loss and remission of comorbid conditions is continually being updated. Minimally invasive approaches to providing treatment to these patients evolve rapidly. With new available for weight loss, we have seen greater complexity in managing complications. Updates regarding the management of bariatric surgery patients is therefore a portion of generally surgery practice which requires attention.

New consensus management recommendations for diverticulitis have recently been published. There have been significant changes in the recommended treatment strategies. Likewise, new approaches for the treatment of conditions such as gastroparesis, intraoperative bleeding, chronic groin pain, and hernias have changed the way that we manage these patients. Updates regarding these treatment strategies will be discussed and debated. We will also include a session which focuses on the utility of specialty-specific quality collaboratives.

Specific patient scenarios will be presented to the audience prior to the presentations in each track. Upon completion of each speaker’s talk there will be an opportunity for open debate and discussion. There will also be a session devoted to interesting cases which highlight and reinforce the concepts covered in the presentations. We hope to see that the audience will at least understand or consider alternatives to treatment they might not have considered prior to attending this course.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVESAt the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:• Discuss the benefits of joining a surgical collaborative.• Discuss the benefits and risks of surgical approaches to the

treatment of gastroparesis.• Describe a diagnostic algorithm for chronic groin pain.• Understand the different endoscopic options for treating morbid

obesity including the pros and the cons of each approach.• Describe techniques and technical tips for the surgical

management of ventral hernias including robotic repairs.• Describe the current treatment recommendations for

diverticulitis. Understand appropriate use of hemostatic agents in the operating room.

• Discuss the biochemical changes that drive weight loss and resolution of comorbid conditions in the setting of bariatric surgery.

• Describe the treatment strategies for the most common bariatric emergencies.

EDUCATIONAL METHODThe educational objectives will be met through lectures by nationally recognized leaders in multidisciplinary areas.

TARGET AUDIENCE• Surgeons (general surgeons, thoracic surgeons, surgical

residents, and fellows)• Gastroenterologists (faculty and fellows)• Advanced Practice Providers (nurses, students, primary care

physicians)
