Public Health Alert Update - Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)
What is COVID-19? COVID-19 is a new respiratory virus identified by Chinese authorities in Hubei province, China. It was previously known as 2019-nCoV. The virus can be spread from person-to-person, and symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
Aomori Prefecture Risk Category: Low Aomori Prefecture COVID-19 Cases: 0
The Far East High School Tournaments were recently cancelled to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of our students. There is no indication that any of the students were exposed or had contact with a COVID-19 case. There are also no DoD personnel in Korea who are considered “Patients Under Investigation” at this time. The cancellation of the school tournaments is an example of Social Distancing which is one of the most effective ways to halt a disease outbreak.
Social Distancing is a strategy to reduce personal interactions and thereby transmission of a disease. Examples include:
– Reducing interactions in the community– Keeping your distance (greater than 6 ft.) when talking with other people– Not shaking hands– Canceling non-essential events
What if I experience symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath)? These symptoms are most likely caused by the flu as it is still flu season. It may also be due to the common cold. Please seek medical attention if you are concerned about your health. The UCC may be contacted at 226-6647. For more information visit https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/faq.htmlPlease contact Public Health at 226-6116 with questions or concerns
