Frequently Asked Questions
Q: If a 5 year old student is in preschool, which meal patterns does the school follow for that student?
Preschool FAQs
A: The meal pattern applies to the grade, not the age of individual students. So, when a 5 year old is in a preschool, the school follows the preschool meal pattern requirements. Similarly, if a 4 year old is in kindergarten, the school follows the K‐5 meal pattern.
Preschool FAQs
Q: Do schools serving infants or preschoolers follow the water requirement for the School Meal Programs or for the CACFP?
Preschool FAQs
A: Schools serving meals to infants and preschoolers will continue to follow the water requirements in the School Meal Programs.
Preschool FAQs
Q: Do preschools follow the School Meal Programs’ guidance (memorandum SP 59‐2016) or the CACFP guidance for accommodating students with disabilities?
Preschool FAQs
A: All schools, no matter the grade or age of the students they are serving, must follow the guidance on accommodating students with disabilities as outlined in SP 59‐2016 “Modifications to Accommodate Disabilities in School Meal Programs.”
Preschool FAQs
Q: If a school serves preschoolers lunch (under NSLP) and a snack through CACFP, can juice be served at both lunch and snack?
Preschool FAQs
A: Yes! Although the intent of the preschool meal pattern is to limit the amount of juice that preschoolers receive, FNS acknowledges that it would be logistically challenging to coordinate juice service between two separate programs.
Preschool FAQs
Q: Does the flavored milk flexibility outlined in SP 32‐2017 “School Meal Flexibilities for School Year 2017‐2018” extend to the preschool meal patterns?
Preschool FAQs
A: No, this does not extend to the preschool meal pattern because preschoolers are not allowed to have flavored milk under the updated meal pattern. The milk options for preschoolers are either unflavored low‐fat or unflavored fat‐free milk.
