background
• In 2008, Nelson Mandela officially handed over the baton over to the next generation of leaders by making
a call to action to initiate a movement that could help change the world for the better, when he said “It is in
your hands to make a difference.”
• Mandela Day is a day to honour the legacy of Madiba, and his values, through volunteering and
community service. It is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power
to transform the world.
• Sasol has participated in Mandela Day activities since 2010. Through its global development programmes,
Sasol strives to promote people-centered, needs-driven and sustainable development of
communities.
• Sasol Change Reaction, our Employee Community Involvement (ECI) programme is one of our key focus
areas that help to involve our most valued resource, our people, in our mission to create stronger
communities.
• The Sasol Change Reaction: Mandela Day is not only about transforming the world, but also about
changing our own worlds and lives – make a difference by giving back in a way that inspires you.
• Option 1: Individual efforts – A list of activities will be supplied to inspire employees to make a
difference
• Option 2: The Business Units could decide on their own project in the community where they
volunteer their time to make a difference for that project.
• Option 3: Amazing Change initiative – It’s a Sasol driven initiative which is based on an extreme
make-over concept
hope school at a glance
• Hope School was established in 1929, and is a public combined school that provides education to
learners with physical and learning disabilities from pre-school (3 year old children) to grade 12.
• The disabilities catered for are Spina Bifida, Muscular Dystrophy, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle
bone), Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Amputees, Brain Tumors and Congenital Disorders.
• The school accommodates 88 boys and 57 girls in two hostels.
• The activity areas within the school grounds and hostels are inadequate for the needs of many of the
children.
• Many of the learners are unable to pay fees and therefore the School is highly reliant on state aid and
grants to maintain the facilities
