Communication of health and safety issues
Compliance with safe work practices

Did you know that there were 83 employee injuries reported in our organization in 2019? California State law requires Rady
Children’s Hospital to have an effective, written workplace injury and illness prevention program; which includes how the hospital detects and corrects unsafe and unhealthy work conditions, communicates issues that are easily understood and ensures that staff comply with safe work practices.
5
The Joint Commission (TJC) requires:
Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego (RCHSD) to have a patient falls prevention program
This program includes that all falls that result in moderate or severe injuries be reported.
6
Safe Medical Devices Act ◦ Electrical and malfunctioning medical device
◦ Reporting injury, illness, or death related to medical devices to the manufacturer and/or to the Food and Drug Administration
◦ Immediately remove equipment from service with all supplies attached and give to Biomed. Do not discharge patient from device.

Did you know that there were 4 FDA visits to RCHSD in2019 ? ◦ The Safe Medical Devices Act of 1990 requires reporting any
serious patient or employee injury, illness or death in which a medical device may have played a role to the manufacturer and/or the Food and Drug Administration. There has been a significant increase in reports of recalls for medications and supplies in FY19 Key for staff is to secure any equipment or supplies associated with any injury or failure and return to Biomed or Supply Chain Management. Always complete a Safety Report.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA): Right to Know Proper use and handling of hazardous chemicals Use of Personal protective equipment (PPE) Material Safety Data Sheets Proper response to a spill Proper labeling of containers
10
Did you know that OSHA visited our campus 1 in 2019 ? Did you know that RCHSD has an average of <1 hazardous spills a month? This is down from 2-3 a month. • OSHA requires employers to inform and train their employees on
the proper use and handling of hazardous chemicals and to provide a safe work environment.
• • A big focus for 2020 is handling hazardous pharmaceuticals
safely.
Hospital Incidence Command System (HICS) ◦ Emergency preparedness plan
◦ Hospital and community wide
◦ Saving lives, limiting casualties and damage
◦ Know role in activation
◦ Sharing of resources
◦ Communication
◦ Preparation for Surge of Patients
11
Did you know there were 9 HIC activations at RCHSD that were NOT drills? ◦ Activations were for power issues, loss of water,
flooding, loss of Information Technology! ◦ All hospitals have an emergency preparedness
plan. ◦ HICS is a flexible, accountability chain of
command plan that is designed to be used for emergency situations both in the hospital and in the community.

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) serve as your instructions for use for any chemical used
◦ SDS can be accessed online
◦ Did you know that there are hazardous chemical being used on a daily basis here at RCHSD?
Employees can work safely with hazardous chemicals as long as the engineering administration and personal protective equipment controls are followed. Read and follow all information on the SDS for:
◦ Instructions for use
◦ How to clean up a hazardous chemical spill
◦ How to treat a chemical exposure
