Overview

Xavier has prepared three potential learning models for the 2020-2021 school year with the ability to transition between each of these models as conditions or guidance dictates.    A change in learning models would be determined by any or a combination of the following: Governor Reynolds, the Iowa Department of Public Health, Iowa Department of Education, Linn County Public Health and the Xavier School Board.    Xavier families will be notified with as much notice as possible if/when Xavier needs to transition models.  In each of the three learning models, attendance will be taken, work graded and credit granted. Xavier faculty and staff are committed to carrying forth our mission of developing the total person in a Catholic environment. We will maintain our tradition of academic excellence, providing academic rigor and student support whether learning takes place fully on-site, on-line or in a hybrid model.

Learning Models

Model 1: Hybrid Learning Model Hybrid Learning is a combination of Online Learning and On-Site Learning. This model allows for the following scenarios:

● Students to attend classes in-person for half the school day every day ● Teachers to engage directly with students ● A reduced number of people in the building at one time

This provides additional space to follow recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regarding proper physical distancing and sanitation.

The Xavier High School Hybrid Model prioritizes having students on campus safely every day. It is important to us that students are in the building and interacting with their classmates and teachers. Students would attend half of their day on campus and half of their day online through synchronous learning. Under this plan, no student would spend an entire day fully online unless requested by the family.

Cohort Division

● All students will be separated into two cohorts: Navy and Silver.   Cohort members will be shared the week of August 3.

● One cohort will attend class on campus (on-site) at Xavier in the morning and return home to attend live classes virtually via Zoom in the afternoon.

● The second cohort will attend live classes virtually via Zoom in the morning and then arrive at Xavier to attend class on campus in the afternoon.

● All students are expected to participate in a full day of classes.

Cohort Schedules

● Cohort schedules will alternate AM/PM on-site classes after every A & B Day cycle (two days).

○ A student in the Navy cohort will attend on-site classes two consecutive school days in the morning (one A Day and one B Day) and then attend on-site classes two consecutive school days in the afternoon (one A Day and one B Day). Over that same period, a student in the Silver cohort will attend on-site classes in the afternoon the first two days and in the morning the second two days.

○ New/incoming families: Xavier classes are on a block schedule with four classes on A days (1A - 4A) and four classes on B days (1B - 4B).

● This rotation of schedules was determined as a result of feedback by Xavier students and in coordination with teachers. This allows students to be in class with each of their teachers every week.

● Xavier recognizes there will be consideration needed for students in special circumstances and will work with families to meet those needs. If your child has a special circumstance, please contact Mr. Matt Svare, Associate Principal.

● The schedule for the following week will be included in Friday Xavier Update emails.

Other Models…

Model 2: Fully On-Site Learning  Model 3: Fully Online Learning

In this model, all students would be on campus, unless they visit with the school regarding a need to learn from home. This would entail

classroom seating six feet apart and the use of larger spaces when needed. When all large spaces are used and there is still a need for

more space in classes with larger enrollment, students would livestream into the class, still in the building, in a neighboring classroom under

teacher supervision.

If needed, Xavier students will attend classes from home and online. In this model, academic work is equivalent in effort and rigor to typical

classroom work. This model would be implemented school-wide in the event of a school closure by the Governor, the Iowa

Department of Public Health, or the Xavier School Board in collaboration with Linn County

Public Health.

Online Learning Option for XHS Families...

Families will have the option to choose the fully online learning model for their student(s) during the 2020-2021 school year while Xavier is operating with a fully on-site or hybrid model as a

school. A family may elect to learn fully online now or at any point beyond the start of the school year. Please contact Mr. Matt Svare, Associate Principal, at [email protected] or

319-294-6635 ext. 303 to discuss this option further.

Starting the School Year at Xavier High School:  The Hybrid Model

After careful consideration of feedback from students, parents and faculty/staff, guidance from Linn County and data from the CDC, Xavier will start the school year using the Hybrid Model. It is our ultimate goal to return safely to in-person instruction based on public health data and this model allows the nearly 700 students, faculty, and staff to achieve that goal.  This model represents a reasonable and responsible approach to start our school year. The Hybrid Model enables students to maintain an in-person connection with their teachers and classmates while prioritizing the health and safety of everyone in our school community.

Survey Data

Feedback is important to us and we recognize that while many families and students are excited to return to school, others, including Xavier teachers, have concerns. We are committed to doing the best we can to make the school safe for everyone and were truly impressed with student feedback which recognized this. Student surveys and in-person discussion with senior leadership differentiated personal student preference to returning to school from their consideration of what is best for all students.   The following charts represent key snapshots of response data collected via parent, student, and teacher/staff surveys fielded in July 2020.

Health & Safety The following health and safety protocols will be implemented for all three models.

Face Coverings

Face Masks

REQUIREMENTS

Face masks are required to be worn by all staff and students in all areas of the building.

STUDENTS:

Students will provide their own cloth face mask. The school will also have a supply of disposable face masks.

STAFF:

Staff will be provided with cloth face masks. Staff may use their own if they so choose.

EXCEPTIONS

Exceptions for wearing face masks will be made for medical reasons. Families should contact School Nurse, Kris Naeve to create a health plan. A doctor's note will be required as part of the health plan.

DRESS CODE

Face masks at Xavier must be solid in color without text, logos, or other prints. Xavier branded masks are allowed.  The mask must fully cover the nose and mouth and secure under the chin with ties or ear loops.  Neck gaiters, open-chin triangle bandanas, costume masks or any other variations are not permitted.  Face masks with (or without) the Xavier logo will be available at Lands End but can be purchased at any store.

Face Shields

Face shields will be supplied to all students and staff.

STUDENTS:

Face shields are strongly encouraged anytime. A face shield does not replace a face mask, but may be worn in addition to a face mask.

STAFF:

Face shields may be worn instead of a face mask when teaching and able to be physically distance (six feet) from students. This allows teachers to better display expression, enunciation, and lip-reading while providing direct instruction from a distanced area of the classroom. They may be used in addition to masks when not able to social distance but do not replace a face mask.  11

Facilities & Cleaning

New UV Filters on HVAC System

UV air filters will be installed in the school’s HVAC system. All air being circulated in the building will pass through the UV filter to inactivate airborne pathogens and microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. In addition, ventilation will be increased to ACH at three times per hour as recommended by the CDC.

Sanitation

SURFACES

Surfaces in each classroom will be sanitized prior to the start of every class. Spray bottles of disinfectant and clean microfiber cloths will be supplied daily in every room to be used by the teacher or a designated student. During class periods, restrooms and hallway handrails will be sanitized.

DRINKING FOUNTAINS

Drinking fountains will be available for use as a water bottle filler only. Drinking directly from the fountain will not be permitted. Students and staff should provide their own refillable water bottle for hydration during the school day. In accordance with the parent-student handbook, water bottles must be clear or translucent, sealable, and plastic.

ELECTROSTATIC SPRAYING

Xavier uses an electrostatic sprayer to disinfect and sanitize large areas. Classrooms, offices and other spaces will be cleaned nightly.

HAND SANITIZATION

Hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed in every classroom and office area. Students and staff will be expected to “gel in and gel out” using hand sanitizer as they enter and exit a room.

12

Physical Distancing

CLASSROOMS

Furniture in classrooms and other areas will be rearranged to maximize physical distance between and among staff and students in order to maintain six feet distance. When possible, classes will use larger spaces or outdoor areas.

HALLWAYS

In employing the hybrid model, there will be a reduced number of students in the halls during passing time. Students will be discouraged from congregating.  There will be a limited number of students allowed in the hallways during class time. With Xavier’s electronic hall passes, the number of passes allowed at any given time will be limited in order to minimize students in the hallways or restrooms.

PARTITIONS

Partitions will be used to separate staff and visitors at the front desk of all office areas.

Food & Nutrition

LUNCH & BREAKFAST

During breakfast and lunch, student seating will include the cafeteria, senior patio and the gym. Students will be expected to maintain distancing when in line and while eating. Students will remove their mask when seated for breakfast or lunch.    Breakfast will only be served before school. There will not be additional breakfast time available at this time.  In the hybrid model, students have three options for lunch. They may choose to eat at school, leave with a boxed lunch or leave to eat off campus/at home. Use of lunch cards will be strictly enforced to keep food lines flowing and help maintain physical distancing.

Additional Measures

REMINDERS & SIGNAGE

Hygiene practices such as frequent and thorough handwashing will be encouraged throughout the day. Routine reminders will be posted throughout the school such as physical distancing, cough etiquette, and staying home when ill.

SEEING THE SCHOOL NURSE

To visit the nurse, students must use their electronic hall pass. There is a limit of three passes allowed to be in use throughout the building to visit the school nurse. Students will stand physically distant when waiting.

ISOLATION AREAS

Isolation areas have been designated for those students needing to go home ill. All areas will be thoroughly sanitized after each student use.

ILLNESS PROTOCOL

Students will be evaluated following protocol from Linn County Public Health concerning any communicable diseases.

Screening

AT-HOME SCREENING

Students and staff must screen for illness prior to coming to school. This includes daily temperature screening at home. Anyone with a temperature of 100.4 or above or must stay home. If a family is unable to screen for fever at home, students can be screened by the school nurse upon arrival to school.

SYMPTOMS

People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:

STUDENTS/STAFF EXHIBITING SYMPTOMS

If a staff or student exhibits COVID-19 related symptoms, has a positive test, or has been identified as being in close contact to someone who has tested positive, they will follow the 10/3/3 rule:

1. Ten (10) days must pass from the start of symptoms AND 2. Must be fever-free (<100.4) for three (3) days or 72 hours without the use

of medication AND 3. Demonstrate significant symptom improvement

If they are able, students will be expected to attend online classes while quarantining/isolating at home. While quarantining/isolating, students may not participate in or attend activities/events.   Close Contact is defined by being less than six feet of an individual for 15 minutes or more or have direct physical contact. Mitigation efforts (fewer students in the building at one time, face covering requirements, and physical distancing) are in place to minimize the amount of students and teachers/staff who would be in close contact with each other.

Academics

Technology for Online Learning

All students have assigned iPads. Academic work will continue to be done through Canvas (Learning Management System). Classes will be conducted via Zoom.

Student Expectations

If the school building is closed, Xavier will provide online continuous learning. Classes and classwork expectations will continue.   Students are expected to behave in a school-appropriate manner when participating in online Zoom classes including active participation with the iPad/device camera remaining on during class. Students are to be visible in their device camera during their online class session.  Students are expected to check Canvas, participate in scheduled classes, and complete assigned activities.   Students should actively monitor their school email account and reply to teachers in a timely manner.

Schedule & Attendance

To provide consistency for students and teachers, class schedules will remain consistent with the bell schedules being used immediately prior to moving to online learning. This will be Xavier’s regular bell schedule or the modified Hybrid bell schedule.

18
