Dear Friends & Colleagues,

Thank you for this exceptional year serving as your SGAC President. It has been an honor to work alongside such talent in our industry and to be at the helm of such renowned conferences and educational programing.

This year we shared expertise for “Managing the Shifting Sands of State Policy” at the Leaders’ Policy Conference in Naples, Florida, and explored the “Crossroads of State Government Affairs” during our National Summit in Salt Lake City, Utah. We engaged with speakers and used our new knowledge and the supportive SGAC community to help us bring real, expert leadership to how our organizations navigate the state government relations arena. SGAC is always interested in the feedback of its members, and I am proud that your feedback ranks both recent conferences among the highest in SGAC’s 40+ year history.

The talented members of the board and committee leadership have enthusiastically embraced their roles and have guided our community, including the unveiling of a new website this year that has served to increase accessibility and engagement between SGAC members and with partner organizations.

As I did one year ago in Boston, I challenge each of you in the coming months to join a committee and actively take steps to further your professional development. Regardless of your goals for your organization and your own career, SGAC has a tradition of providing unmatched opportunities for our profession. Thank you for this opportunity.

Dear Friends,

Welcome to our 2017-2018 SGAC Update. This mid-year report marks a one-time adjustment in the timing of our annual report, which, starting this year, will be published at year’s end for a full calendar year snapshot of our activities. This report highlights many notable achievements. I am proud to celebrate these achievements and continued progress in membership growth and improved programs. In addition to the many accomplishments featured in this report, I would like to highlight additional activities of which we are proud:

Development of New Strategic Plan: Our mission is to be the premier national association for multi-state government affairs professionals, providing opportunities for networking and professional development. To help guide our staff and board leadership over the coming years, we embarked on a process to develop an updated strategic plan that was finalized and

approved by the board in the second half of 2017. SGAC’s strategic plan serves as a detailed road map for our organization, marking goals we anticipate achieving in the coming years and describing how we plan to achieve them. We will continue to focus on delivering opportunities for professional devel-opment and networking – both peer-to-peer, and between members and legislative leaders and state policymakers.

Update of the Professional Certificate Program: The Education & Training Committee undertook a major redesign of the Professional Certificate Program this past year, not only removing some of the impediments for enrollment, but clarifying program competency titles and descriptions to offer even more timely training to members.

Continued Membership Growth: Since last year’s Annual Report, we have added 24 new member organizations to our ranks. We are excited by the expansion of our membership numbers, but even more by the level of participation at which members, both new and more veteran, are participating in our programs. The Professional Certificate Program continues to be a big draw, and graduates from the program now nearly 100 SGR professionals who have shown their dedication to their own professional growth and to the industry of state affairs.

Stay tuned for more accomplishments in the second half of this year, which will be featured in the 2018 Annual Report. As always, it is our pleasure and privilege to provide you with the benefits to help you excel at your and your organizations’ goals.

SGAC’s Update not only takes a chance to review this past year but allows a look at opportunities in the coming months.

“SGAC adds value to our State Government Affairs program. As we all face greater demands on creating value for our employers and the custom-ers we serve, SGAC is more important than ever. From the excellent speakers who educate us on emerging trends and new legislative proposals, to the networking opportunities with state policy makers outside of the pressure of legislative sessions, to the certificate programs and partner opportunities - SGAC covers all the bases.” - Katrina Iserman, Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc.

The State Government Affairs Council is the premier national association for multi-state government affairs professionals of nearly 200 major U.S. corporations, trade associations and service providers. SGAC as an organization doesn’t take positions on matters of public policy, but through its members seeks to enhance policy makers’ knowledge of various business perspectives.
