Course Directors Welcome Note We are delighted that you are participating in our annual Update in Internal Medicine course and would like to

take this opportunity to extend a most warm welcome to all of you.

The course faculty is comprised of the best clinician-teachers at Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical

Center, a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. We are also grateful to our esteemed guest faculty

for taking time out of their very busy schedules to participate.

During the seven days of this course, we will address important topics covering the various sub-specialties in

Internal Medicine, including Endocrinology, Pulmonary Diseases, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Infectious

Diseases, Nephrology, Rheumatology, Cardiology, Oncology, Neurology, and Hematology. You will also have

the opportunity to hear a number of important special lectures of relevance to the current practice of medicine.

We have incorporated many interactive Challenging Cases with Your Participation sessions, which will enable

you to anonymously test your knowledge in the different areas of medicine. These sessions are a terrific way to

teach and to learn, and a very useful tool by which a large number of topics can be addressed to complement

the large stable of the more didactic lectures. Past participants have often commented that these sessions are

truly unique and amongst the highlights of the course.

Over the past several years, participants have requested that we include most, if not all of the slides that are

shown by our faculty. You will note that, each speaker’s syllabus includes the slides and a comprehensive

bibliography. A number of presenters have also included checklists for the Primary Care Practitioner that

follows each lecture. All of this information is available to you on a USB device and the course website.

We trust you will enjoy this course, leave informed, perhaps, even inspired, to cherish all that is glorious and

best about the medical profession. It is our fervent hope that the new knowledge you acquire will allow you to

practice State-of-the-Art medicine so that your patients will live healthier and happier lives.

Best wishes for continued success.
