Regulation on Animal Health – State of Play

• Commission legal proposal adopted 6 May 2013

• The European Parliament has adopted a first reading opinion in April 2014 just before the end of its term (2009-2014)

• The new European Parliament (2014-2019) has just confirmed that opinion in September 2014

• The Council of the European Union is expected to deliver its negotiating mandate in autumn 2014

• The co-legislators largely support the principles of the initial Commission proposal

• Final adoption of the new Animal Health Regulation is expected in 2015, with a transitional period of 36 months for it to take effect in 2018

• Commission legal proposal adopted on 10 September 2014 COM(2014) 558 final

• Adopted together with:

• Proposal for a Regulation on the manufacture, placing on the market and use of medicated feed COM(2014) 556 final

• Proposal submitted to European Parliament and Council of the EU

• Main objectives:

• To increase the availability of veterinary medicinal products

• To reduce administrative burden

• To improve the functioning of the internal market

• To tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR )

• To support innovation and competitiveness in the sector
