Since 2009, CanWest DHI has published reproduction bench-marks based on the previous years herd performance. To help look at how we’ve progressed, we are comparing the average reproductive performance in 2018 to herd performance in 2009.

Since 2009, CanWest DHI publishes reproduction benchmarks based on the previous years herd performance. To help look at how were progressed, let compare the average reproductive performance in 2018 to how herds were performing in 2009.

A good news story, pregnancy rates have improved over the last 9 years with an increase 2%. Pregnancy rate essentially measures the speed in which cows eligible to become pregnant became pregnant over a given time frame. The normal time frame is 21 days, the length of one estrus cycle. The reason for the increase in pregnancy rate can be seen through the improvements of insemination and conception rates. The largest shift in performance numbers between 2009 to 2018 has been insemination rate with a 4% increase. Insemination rate (also called heat detection rate) is the percentage of cows which were eligible to be bred that actually got bred over a given time period. The reason for this change is simple, herds are less depended on visual heat detection in 2018, then they were in 2009. Activity monitoring and timed A.I. have evolved into essential tools for herds to use, which have benefitted insemination rates. A slight improvement in conception rate can be seen, with a 1% increase. Conception rate is the percentage of cows which become pregnant after being bred over a given period of time. Although there is still a long ways to go in terms of improving fertility, the fact that conception rate is starting to climb instead of fall is real progress. Lastly, one of the largest shifts in herd reproductive metrics is age at first calving, with the DHI average now at 25 months. With 1 ½ month reduction in age at first calving since 2009, shows a significant shift in the way we manage our heifers. Better calf raising, heifer nutrition and investment in breeding tools such as activity monitoring have all contributed to positive change. Mark Carson transitions to Semex in the role of Genetic Solutions Manager

Mark will lead the support and development of new and existing genetic solutions as part of the Semex Solutions team starting this March. Mark has been employed with EastGen over the past ten years, most recently in the role of Solutions Manager leading a team of field specialists supporting ai24 and Semex Solu-tions. Mark has played an important role supporting producers across the EastGen area and has continually pushed for advancement.
