Creative Tips FOR YOUR FAVOURITE OLD ITEMS
FROM SOMETHING OLD MAKE SOMETHING NEW – MORE THAN JUST A TREND
An increasing number of fans of "make-it-yourself" are discovering the principle of up-cycling with which old fabrics, which have outworn their use, can be turned into new products. This not only conserves available resources, it also makes the purse strings stretch further.
The best thing about it is that upcycling lets you produce unique, quite personal things for yourself and your home, which have their very own charm, irrespective of whether you are a newcomer to sewing or an expert.
Swantje is a trained bespoke dressmaker and fashion designer from Berlin. On her "yes-honey.de" website, she inspires sewing enthusiasts with her own patterns and designs. She also writes books on sewing and produces videos for beginners.
In collaboration with Prym, Swantje presents in this brochure (sewing) instructions for upcycling ideas, so that you can create something new from an old favourite item.
Further upcycling instructions from Swantje are available on our Prym website under www.prym.com/upcycling

Materials for upcycling can be found almost everywhere; you already have most of them in your home. Garments are especially suitable for revamping. In this way, in the twinkling of an eye, you can bring new life to a favourite item which has seen better days.
It is not usually necessary to have any great knowledge or experience in order to jazz up an old garment. In a few simple steps and with the right material, absolutely everyone can create a new look. Your creativity will know no bounds.
For example, you could turn an old pair of jeans into a stylish apron or make a fantastic shopping bag from an old jute sack. The Prym range offers the right tools and lots of inspiration for all upcycling ideas.
With our reliable, high-quality sewing tools, you can effortlessly work with all your fabrics and items and have just the right tool to hand.
Our simple step-by-step instructions help you to conjure up successful new projects from old, discarded fabrics, for yourself or as individual presents. Old clothes may even be transformed into new favourite items.

2
Cut off one leg from the back section and use it to fill in the space between the legs in the front section. Shorten everything to the desired length and then sew around the hem or simply leave unhemmed.
4
You can now adjust the shape of the upper part of your apron, before folding all the open edges inwards and top-stitching all around.
6
Now attach the two buttons on the upper edge to the fabric and you are ready to calculate the length of the last strap. Clamp the ends in the clasp of the buckle.
83
For the bib, cut off the back section below the pockets and sew it centrally below the waistband of the front section. At the start and finish, leave a distance of 1 cm from every edge, so that you can still fold it over.
5
For tying the apron, you can sew a strap to each side, fold in the open ends and sew up firmly with a zig-zag stitch.
7
All you have to do now is put on the apron and start up the barbecue; you are ready for your guests.

Then, place the front section of the jeans on the table, so that the crotch areas lie flat on top of each other. Pin and sew the parts together.
First of all, unpick the side seams of the jeans up to the waistband (simply cut through that) and unpick the inner leg and crotch seams up to the end of the zip fastener.

> Old shirt> Pattern for child's dress> Sewing thread in
matching colour> Sewing machine> Iron> Pressing cloth> Bias binding in
matching colour > Lama appliqué> Tailor’s shears > Glass-headed pins > Sewing machine needles
Universal No. 70
From something old create something new, so bring out the old shirt and cut close to the side and shoulder seams along the length of the sleeves.
2
Place the pattern pieces along the finished shirt hem, with the button placket as the fastening on the centre front. Do not forget to leave a seam allowance and neaten all open edges after cutting.

7
Place the front and back right side to right side and sew the shoulder and side seams together. Then iron open the seam allowances, so that they lie flat.
Snip the seam allowance every 2 cm around the curves close up to the seam and then fold the bias binding completely to the inside.
If there is not enough fabric for facings, use bias binding instead. Simply fold open the binding on one side and sew it right side to right side along the fold to the neckline and the armholes. Overlap it slightly at the ends.
Quickly top-stitch once more from the outside and iron on a cute appliqué.
Now you have turned a large, old shirt into a new child's dress.Just a warning to end with: re-creating things is addictive!
The pattern is ready to hand, but you can't find a suitable fabric? How about re-creating something, rather than buying new? The best thing about it is that the button placket and hem have already been sewn! CHILD'S DRESS

You need:
> Old jute sack> Sewing thread in matching colour> Sewing machine> Strap > Cord > Dressmaker’s chalk white> Patchwork ruler > Tailor’s shears > Iron > Ironing sheet> Safety pin > Glass-headed pins > Sewing machine needles
Jeans No. 90/14
To start with, an old jute sack has to bite the dust, because you cut out of it two rectangles, each 52 x 43 cm in size. Of course, you can include the imprint and give your bag an individual design. All the edges should be quickly neatened.
2
Cut a strip 37 cm long for the strap, fold it in half and pin it 10 cm from the upper edge on one side, before sewing the bag together.
3
1
You always have your favourite needlework tools with you, but something is still missing? Then sew yourself a suitable travelling bag. BAG MADE
FROM AN OLD JUTE SACK Sew each side 3 cm from the top edge towards the
bottom. Then leave a 5 cm wide gap for the cord and close the rest of the side seam to the base. Always secure the beginning and end of a seam. Sew the base closed along the entire width and iron open the seam allowance.
4
Now iron the upper edge 1 cm towards the inside and then iron it inwards once more by 4.5 cm, before top-stitching all around close to the fold edge, 4 cm from the edge of the bag.
6
Now all you have to do is knot the cord ends, put in your needlework tools and you will not lose anything when out and about.
8
So that the bag can stand up, take the corners one by one and fold them diagonally, so that the base and side seam lie on top of each other. Then sew a 18 cm wide base and cut off the protruding corners, leaving a 1 cm seam allowance. Neaten the open edges once more.
5
To close the bag, you need two cords, each 125 cm long. Using a safety pin, push the first cord through one of the upper openings all the way round, until it comes out again at the same place. Do the same with the other cord through the opening on the other side.

You need:
> Old towel> Sewing thread in
matching colour > Sewing machine> Coloured embroidery
thread> Polyester filling> Aquatrick pen> Tailor's shears> Glass-headed pins > Sewing machine needles
Universal No. 70 > Sewing needles > Embroidery needle
Let the kids draw their favourite animal on the towel using self-erasing textile markers; don´t worry, the lines disappear all by themselves. Don´t forget to leave a 1 cm seam allowance all round and then cut out the motif double using the tailor’s shears.
2
Clip the curves (approx. every 1-2 cm) and all the interior corners close to the seam and then turn the animal carefully right side out through the opening. This makes the seam allowances lie more smoothly on the inside.
4
Next, stuff the animal with polyester filling, until it feels like a proper cuddly toy.
6
Sew up the end firmly again and now you will have a new friend and a new towel to take with you to the beach.
8
Sew the two sections together right side to right side and don´t forget to leave an opening for turning approx. 5 cm long.
3
Now use embroidery thread and a thick needle to embroider on a sweet face. To prevent the thread breaking, do not pull it too tightly.
5
You can close the turning opening with an invisible mattress stitch. This is done by hand, making sure that you sew up firmly to begin. Then, insert the needle into the folded edges in each side in turn, always at the same height as the previous stitch until you reach the end.
71
The old terry towel is no longer any good for the beach, but the little ones still find it ever so snug? Then it's high time for an alternative!
