“I used to ask God to help me. Then, I asked God if I might be of help. I ended up asking God to work through me.” These challenging and inspiring words were penned by Hudson Taylor the English mission- ary to China. At the time of his death in 1905 the China Inland Mission consisted of 205 stations with 849 missionaries, and 125,000 Chinese Christians; clearly God had answered Taylor’s prayer to work through him.The Samaritan counseling ministry is served by many who have sharedTaylor’s prayer. Although the task force of Church of the Palms could have chosen to hire a Christian counselor to solely serve the members of their congregation, they had a wider vision from God which included providing Christian counseling for the broad- er community. Nearly 12 years later, Samaritan will provide over 5100 counseling sessions through six highly trained Christian counselors in six offices provided by partner congre- gations throughout Sarasota and Manatee Counties. Clearly, God is working through the efforts of many volunteers who serve on the Board of Directors, a committee or task force, or in the business office. Their efforts make it possible for Samaritan to instill hope and transform lives. One such life is that of Bennie*. Bennie is a 7 year old boy brought to Samaritan by his mom. Bennie is grieving because his dad had to move to another city to find work. As much as he loves his mom, he misses the interaction with his dad. He feels sad and has withdrawn. Through play therapy, Bennie and his therapist are working through the grieving process while retaining the hope that it won’t be too long before the family is back together again…Your support of Samaritan makes this opportu- nity for Bennie to heal possible. Rebecca* was referred to Samaritan by her pastor after she met with him. Rebecca shared how she was afraid for her family because she was not handling the intense stress in her life very well. Always a social drinker, Rebecca realized that since her husband had died suddenly 9 months ago leaving her with a 3 and a 5 year old that she was using alcohol to help her get through the long evenings after work. She was exhausted and sad…and depressed, but didn’t want to admit it because she did not believe that she “had time or resources to be depressed.” Through her work with her counselor it was determined that she had reached out for help early enough so that she did not need to be hospitalized for detoxification. It was also decided that she needed to give herself permission to work through all of the emotions she was feeling in order for her to be a healthy individual, employee, and mom. Her work was not easy, but through the counseling relationship she was able to deal with her anger at God, her fear of the future, and her lack of self confidence to meet the chal- lenges in front of her without her husband. Your support of Samaritan provides hope, healing and growth in ways that are life-giving and life-saving! Samaritan News 1 Summer 2011 From the Desk of Rev. PILGRIMAGEMelissa Miller, LCSW

I see people every day who are on oneof three kinds of pilgrimages: of theirown choosing; of their own making; orwhich seem to have come over themlike a dark cloud out of the blue.

Let’s look at an example of each. First,“of their own choosing”: let’s grant thatwhatever we may each believe aboutthe complexities of free will, in our con-scious daily lives we exercise choice.

Years ago I knew I could choose to bea pastoral counselor, and in fact I didmake that choice. It’s been a pilgrimageof learning, spiritual development, excitement, disappointment, challenge. What makes a pilgrimage out of mycareer choice is a theme that was alwaysthere, no matter how imperfectly Ishowed it: Love. First of God; then ofmy many colleagues and clients overthe years. But it wasn’t there all at once– no, in fact I didn’t even see that I wason a pilgrimage of learning how to Love(God’s way) until a few years ago.

Next: of their own making:” I knowsomeone who is on a financial pilgrim-age he never dreamed he’d be on. It’snot the one he chose, but he’s on it byhis own doing. He’s going down fast, because he over-rode his own instinctsand made some investments he knewwere beyond his risk tolerance andresources – and they failed.

What makes this a pilgrimage? Hisresponse to it. It didn’t stop him in thedepths of his being. He chose to learnfrom his mistakes and go on. He choseto see this experience, which will takemonths or years to get through, as agift from God. Yes, he’s suffering, hisfamily is suffering, and he’s lost some‘friends’. Yet he knows he’s drawn closerto God throughout, as has his family.

Volunteering in the office once aweek at Samaritan, knowing that Ican help out in a small way for aministry that helps heal the hurtingin our community, is a blessing tome. One of my favorite verses isProverbs 11:25b “Those whorefresh others, will themselves berefreshed.”

Fifth Annual Golf Tournament& Church Challenge

Continued from the side bar on page 5.

Finally: the “dark cloud” pilgrimage.A person has done everything they canthink of, and done it well and in a Godlyfashion. Life looks pretty good in thatperson’s eyes. Then something happens, unexpectedly: a category 5 hurricanedrops in for a visit, and leaves behind…nothing. A young woman loses every-thing except her young children. Shedidn’t ask for this, didn’t cause it, but herpilgrimage begins when she chooses toendure all it means in terms of loss andcrisis and opportunity, and go on withthe same type of Godly life she had beenbuilding before the hurricane.

Notice the italicized words, above:learning, love, response, drawn closerto God, chooses. That’s what can makea life circumstance a pilgrimage. Whenwe notice what God places before usby choosing to respond, love, learn, anddraw closer to Him, a pilgrimage hasbegun. By nature it’s a journey into theunknown, so we may be anxious andunsure – but firmly set on drawingcloser to God, we will be rewarded inHis way and in His time.

“The demands and expectations on Pastors are at the highest level they have ever been. Part oftheir important role is to offer wise counsel to those who ask or require it. In most cases one ortwo sessions with a parishioner will suffice, but there are always those individuals or couplesthat require longer and more intense pastoral counseling. In times like this the able counselorsof Samaritan Counseling of the Gulfcoast can be an incredible asset to the caring Pastor whodesires his parishioners to receive only the highest quality Christian counseling. Their solidChristian worldview, capable training, strong experience level, and inclusion of Christ-centeredvalues combine to make Samaritan my first choice in pastoral counseling referrals. I wouldpersonally encourage every pastor in the southwest Florida region to consider Samaritan as thecenter of their referral network.”
