    This newsletter will is a medium for connecting veterans and veteran supporters to theveteran support organizations of the state. This newsletter lists upcoming events, inaddition to information on benefits, education, and employment opportunities forveterans. If your organization supports veterans, please send information on your VeteranService Organization [email protected]. If you do not wish to be on this list please

    RETROACTIVE STOP LOSS SPECIAL PAY DEALINE EXTENSION

    The Stop Loss Pay deadline was extended to December 3, 2010. Please share this

    information with all of our veterans that it could possibly apply to. Retroactive Stop

    Loss Pay (RSLSP)

    Those eligible must submit their claim by Dec. 3, 2010.

    The DoD Web site (http://www.defense.gov/stoploss) links to service-specific sites,where you can get more information, or begin the RSLSP claim process.The 2009 War Supplemental Appropriations Act established Retroactive Stop LossSpecial Pay (RSLSP), providing $500 for each month/partial month served in stoploss status. Service members, veterans, and beneficiaries of service members whoseservice was involuntarily extended under Stop Loss between Sept. 11, 2001 and Sept. 30,2009 are eligible for RSLSP.To receive this benefit, those who served under stop loss must submit a claim for the

    special pay (by Dec 3, 2010). Throughout the year, the services have been reaching outto service members, veterans and their families through direct mail, veteran serviceorganizations, and the media. But there is still money left to be claimed, and the deadlineis approaching.The average benefit is $3,700.Note on EligibilityEffective Dec. 19, 2009, per the Defense Appropriations Act, stop-lossed servicemembers who voluntarily reenlisted or extended their service, and received a bonus forsuch reenlistment or extension of service, became no longer eligible to receive retroactivestop loss special pay.The following service-specific sites provide more information and allow you to begin the

    Chicago Police Department Implement New Recruitment Initiatives for Veterans

    On October 28, 2010 The Chicago Department announced that the City will be

    administering the Pre-employment Written Exam for the position of Chicago PoliceOfficer on December 11, 2010, at McCormick Place in Chicago. Applications will beaccepted online from October 28th through November 26, 2010 atwww.chicagopolice.org.The most significant change is the increased age requirement for non-military applicantsas well as a 20 percent preference consideration given to military applicants.In order to encourage a more established and mature police force, the Department israising the minimum application age from 21 years of age to 25 years of age for non-military personnel. Military personnel with appropriate service can apply at 21 years ofage. However, you must be less than 40 years old at the time of hire.A Veterans preference has also been created, which requires that a minimum of 20

    percent of applicants referred for each class will be military veterans, provided that asufficient number of veterans apply for the position.The Department will continue to collaborate with community and business partners toincrease its overall applicant pool. In 2010, Chicago Police Department membersattended over 126 community recruitment events at locations including Colleges andUniversities, Veterans Groups/Military/Government, and Aldermanic Community Fairs.The City continues to work increase and enhance its outreach efforts for Veterans whoare interested in future employment with the City of Chicago.Currently the Department of Human Resources provides job counseling and technicalsupport in developing on-line profiles and resumes for Veterans seeking employmentwith any City department. The City will continue to work with all departments to better

    service Chicago Veterans.In addition, the Chicago Police Department will set up three make-up exams forreturning Veterans who are unable to take the regularly scheduled pre-employmentexam that is needed for the eligibility process. Additional make-up exams for militarypersonnel may be scheduled, if necessary.Eligibility Requirements include:Age To apply, you must be at least 25 years old by the date of application unless youare a current or former member of the Armed Forced of the United States with aminimum of 3 consecutive years of active duty, in which case you must be at least 21years old. You must be less than 40 years old at the time of hire.Drivers License You must have a valid drivers license to apply and will need a validIllinois drivers license at the time of hire.Education/ Military Service In order apply, you must have:

    60 semester or 90 quarter hours from an accredited college or university; or Served 3 full consecutive years on active duty in the Armed Forced of the United

    States; or 30 semester or 45 quarter hours from an accredited college or university and

    served 1 consecutive year on active duty in the Armed Forces of the UnitedStates.

    Residency Requirement You are not required to be a resident of the City of Chicago atthe time of application. However, you will be required to be a resident of the City ofChicago if hired.Firearm Owners Identification Card (FOID) You will need a FOID card issued bythe State of Illinois at the time of hire.

    Hiring Process You will be required to take an examination administered on December11, 2010 at McCormick Place. After the examination, you will be required to undergo abackground investigation, medical examination, psychological assessment, drug screens,fitness tests and other pre-employment procedures as determined by the Chicago PoliceDepartment before being eligible for hire.If a candidate passes all of the aforementioned examinations, they are eligible to advanceto the next phase in the Police Academy. At this point candidates are required to takeover 20 exams including: 16 written exams, seven proficiency tests and all candidatesmust pass a State test in order to become a Chicago Police Officer.At the conclusion of this process, the Department plans to hire two additional classes in2011, adding between 150 to 200 new police officers to the force. That is in addition to

    FREE FLU SHOTS FOR VETERANS

    For Armed Forces veterans who wish to receive a flu vaccine to protect against bothseasonal flu and the H1N1 virus (Swine Flu), there is no reason to pay for the flu shot orwait in long lines to receive it. An ample supply of the combined vaccine is available to

    veterans at no charge from Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, located at 820 S. DamenAvenue in Chicago. All veterans are eligible, even if they have not previously used VAservices.

    The Department of Veterans Affairs strongly endorses the use of the flu vaccine asprotection against both seasonal flu and H1N1. It has been proven effective in reducingthe spread of flu viruses and also helps to protect the families of anyone who receives thevaccine.

    Flu shots are offered at the medical center Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4p.m. in Room 1458, located on the first floor of the Damen Pavilion. No appointment isneeded and veterans will receive their choice of either free self-parking or free valetparking at the medical centers garage entrance on Ogden Avenue.

    Veterans are asked to bring their VA identification card, DD Form 214 or other proof ofmilitary service to receive their flu shot if they are not already enrolled for care at themedical center.
