There are many simple joys in life. Your beautiful bride getting to spend some much needed time with her family. Seeing your son mature into a young man. Hearing your dad sing an old song you have not heard in years and spending time with friends. Then there is going into your garage and seeing no less than 3 race cars; A 63 Plymouth Savoy, a 64 Dodge 440 and a 65 Plymouth Belvedere. It's a shame only one of them is mine. We had a great turnout at the January meeting at Spring Creek BBQ. I'm looking forward to our February meeting. Once again this year it will be on the last day of the Autorama. Please come by our display for 2013 and say hey to: Tommy Martin with his 68 Hemi R/T Charger, David Fojtasek with his 68 5.7 Hemi barracuda convertible, Kyle Hill with his 71 Chrysler Town & Country Wagon, Rich Lemmon with his 72 Plymouth Road Runner and my 64 Dodge 440 with the club smoker. See ya soon Mark Buchanan

Off The Wing by Barry Hansen Hope you are having a good winter. As I write this it is 68 degrees. Had the top down on the convertible last week. Aren't North Texas winters wonderful? Finally after what seemed like a long off-season, racing is upon us. NHRA WinterNationals, Pomona, CA, Feb 17 (Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Stock all Mopar defending world champs). Texas Muscle-car Challenge, Kennedale, March 10th (Cowtown Mopars defending champions). American Le Mans, Sebring, FL, Mar 16 and Circuit of the Americas (Austin, TX) Sep 21 (root, root, root for the Vipers). Indy Car, St Petersburg, FL, March 24th. And NASCAR... like, who cares? Next Fort Worth Cars and Coffee will be March 9, 8 am-12 n at La Grave Field (FW Cats baseball field, Main Street just north of downtown and the river). Hosted by Autobahn of Ft Worth. Free cof-fee and donuts. I'll be there about 9am, hate to get up too early on a Sat. Let's make a good Mopar showing. This is right in our backyard. Easy to get to and the price is right. The new car market shares are in for 2012. GM at 17.9% (remember years ago when they had 55%). Ford at 15.4%, Toyota 14.2% and Chrysler 11.4% In comparison, 2011 had Mother Mopar at only had about 5.5% market share. Onward and upward, January sales up 16%. Last year new car sales survey (3-6 months after the sale, “How satisfied are you with your new car purchase?”). Dodge Challenger topped the list with the most satisfied owners. Now, just hurry up and make a Challenger convertible. Only in Charlotte...I have a black team jacket with nothing but a big “40” and a little unreadable sig-nature on the pocket. People try to match a Dallas Cowboy or Maverick player to it. In Kansas City (my “outlaws” live there) they try to fit a Chief or Royals player to the number. A couple of years ago passing through Charlotte, NC. Stopped in a grocery store to buy something healthy (ice cream I think). A young woman passing me in the aisle turned and said “Sterlin' Marlin” and kept on going. She, of course, was right, even pronouncing his name correctly. Spike TV Power Block, Courtney Hansen. Both of us are Hansens (she even spells it correctly). Both of us know and love cars. Both of us incredibly good looking. Must be related. You might be a gearhead if...if you have to stop and think how many cars you have...if you have more clothes for working on your cars than nice clothes...if you believe there is no such thing as “too much cam” only “not enough engine”...if while watching car chase scenes on TV you analyze or criticize the scenes out loud...if your daughter knows more about cars than her dates...if you have ever made a service writer cry (bonus for making a service manager cry). My thanks to CarCraft. So far a mild winter. Here is hoping for a great spring. What? You drive a Chevy...then you must like to walk a lot. Mopar or No Car.

From The Veep’s Desk

I am not much for watching television, but i do like Turner Classic Movies and the History Channel. I like to watch something that I did not study in "Current Events" while in school. Anyway, last Sunday we had a bunch of family over to the house to celebrate a couple of birthdays. The television got turned on to occupy the younger ones, and TCM got selected as the chan-nel. There is very little on cable TV that anyone under 30 should be allowed to watch to begin with, but TCM is a pretty safe bet. The movie showing was "King Solomon's Mines", filmed in 1950, and starring Deborah Kerr and Stewart Granger. Just prior to the start of the movie, they ran one of those short film clips that preceded the modern day infomercial. This clip, shot in color, was about the Dodge Power Wagons that were used during the filming, to transport the cast and crew around Africa. The trucks were either '49 or '50 models, painted with the dark green bodies and black fend-ers and running boards that are so common on these vehicles. I counted eight different trucks during the film, with several neat variations. One was set up with a flat bed and gin-pole and winch as a recovery vehicle. Another was set up with a refrigerated box to keep food stuffs cold. Seems Ms. Kerr liked her Coca-Cola ice cold! Three trucks were set up as covered box beds to haul the props. camping gear, and other miscellaneous equipment. Two were set up like short school buses to haul the cast and crew. The last one was a standard long bed Power Wagon used as a pathfinder vehicle. All the vehicles had front mounted winches, and the recov-ery vehicle had an additional bed mounted one. We were treated to several minutes of watching the trucks driving in all types of terrain in Africa, crossing streams, plains, jungle, and even some pretty serious rock crawling. Saw close-ups of gear shifting, PTO engaging, winching (no wenching however), and a couple of major missteps. One during a river crossing, and the other during a rock crawl. Both of those required the skilled use of the recovery vehicle to resolve. The narrator was constantly extolling the rug-ged durability of the Dodge trucks, and how they required only minimum maintenance to keep them running. The trucks were used daily in the African bush for seven months of filming, and were brought back to the states with the cast and crew after the filming was con-cluded. Incredibly, after all of that, the total repair bill for all eight trucks was under $300.00! That is barely more that a tune-up and oil change today. Quite a tribute to the engi-neers and line workers at Dodge. ….Oh, the movie was OK too. Hope to see everyone at Autorama at Market Hall in Dallas, February 15-16 & 17. Ken Key VP
