ON A RUN: Following last night’s 4-3 extra inning walk-off victory
over the Pirates, the Dodgers look to record their second sweep of
the season as they close out the series finale against Pittsburgh
tonight. Los Angeles has won a season-high tying four consecutive
games (also: April 27-30) and have been victorious in nine of its last
11 games since April 27. After tonight’s contest, the Boys in Blue
will head to the Mile-High City to begin a seven-game road trip
against the Rockies (4) and the Giants (3).
The Dodgers, who have beaten the Bucs in four of their last
six contests, look to sweep Pittsburgh for the first time since
Los Angeles took the three-game set on April 5-7, 2013 at
Dodger Stadium.
Los Angeles, which improved to 12-6 (.667) at home this
season, are now tied with the Diamondback’s for the best
home record in the National League. The Dodgers have
won seven of their last nine games at the Ravine.
CLUTCH CITY: In the bottom of the 10th inning Dodger skipper
Dave Roberts sent Austin Barnes to pinch-hit with a man on first
and Barnes came through in the clutch, recording his first career
walk-off hit with an RBI double to end the game. Los Angeles this
season has been one of the best pinch-hitting teams in the big
leagues, posting a .333 (22-for-66) batting average, tying the Cubs
for second-best mark in the National League and trailing only the
Cardinals (.432, 19-for-44). The Dodger bench leads the Major
Leagues in hits (22), at-bats (66), runs (13), doubles (5) and walks
(9, T-1st) while ranking in the top-5 in homers (2, T-3rd) and RBI (12,
2nd). Los Angeles pinch-hitters have posted a .413 OBP, which ranks
second in the NL, while its .500 SLG ranks third.
Standouts off the bench include Chris Taylor (4-for-7, HR,
4 RBI), Adrián González (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Franklin
Gutierrez (3-for-5, 2 R) and Andrew Toles (3-for-9, 2B,
RBI).
MAEKEN MADNESS: Right-handed pitcher Kenta Maeda will
make his seventh start of the season tonight and will look to continue
his series of strong outings, after going 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA (3
ER/12.0 IP) in his past two starts. In those starts, he has held batters
to a .190 average (8-for-42) and has posted a 1.00 WHIP, while
striking out 16 against only four walks in 12 innings. In his last nine
starts at Dodger Stadium, Maeda has gone 6-1 with a 3.55 ERA (20
ER/50.2 IP) and has held the opposition to a .211 batting average,
while striking out 57 against 13 walks.
STRAIGHT DEALING: Following the very strong performance
by last night’s starter Julio Urías, who allowed just one run on one
hit in a career-high 6.1 innings, Dodger starters lead the Majors with
a 3.36 ERA (69 ER/184.2 IP). They also rank among the best in the
senior circuit in wins (14, T-2nd), opponents’ batting average (.233,
3rd), strikeouts (193, 2nd), WHIP (1.17, 1st), strikeout-to-walk ratio
(3.39 ERA, 1st) and opponents’ OPS (.687, 2nd).
Los Angeles’ pitching staff overall also leads the big
leagues with a 3.23 ERA (106 ER/295.0 IP) and 326
strikeouts, while ranking among the league leaders in
opponents’ batting average (.230, 4th), opponents’ OPS
(.662, 2nd) and WHIP (1.18, 3rd).
Kenley Jansen recorded his second win of the season last
night (also: April 27, 2017 at San Francisco) after tossing a
perfect 10th inning with two strikeouts. Jansen, who has
tossed 12 scoreless outings in 13 relief appearances this
season, ranks among NL relievers in saves (7, T-5th) and
strikeouts (25, 2nd). Tonight, the first 40,000 ticketed fans
will receive a Kenley Jansen Bobblehead, presented by
Farmer John.
THE HITS KEEP COMING: Los Angeles kept the hot bats going
last night, recording 13 hits for the seventh 10+ hit game in their last
10 contests since April 28, which is tied for second most in the big
leagues during that span. The Dodgers have been swinging the bats
well, especially at Dodger Stadium this season, ranking among the
National League leaders in home batting average (.277, 5th), OBP
percentage (.355, 3rd), SLG (.457, 6th), hits (168, 4th), runs (101, T-
3rd), doubles (36, T-2nd), home runs (23, T-5th) and RBI (94, 5th).
Yasmani Grandal put the Dodgers on the board last night,
slugging his fourth home run of the season with a two-run
shot in the fourth inning. Grandal, who finished with a
season-high tying three hits last night (also: April 30 vs.
Philadelphia), has hit well at Dodger Stadium this year,
batting .291 (16-for-55) with six runs, two doubles, three
home runs and 10 RBI in 16 games.
Cody Bellinger tied the game 3-3 with an RBI single in
the ninth inning, as he drove in his 15th run of the season
in only his 13th career big league game, which is tied for
the most runs driven in by a Dodger in his first 13 games
since 1920 (also: Matt Kemp, May 28-June 11, 2001).
Bellinger has hit safely in six of eight home games this
season, posting a .323 (10-for-31)/.382/.613 slashline with
nine runs, a double, a triple, two home runs and six RBI.
Since his promotion on April 25, he ranks among the NL
leaders in runs (13, T-5th), homers (5, T-4th), RBI (15, T-
5th), SLG (.680, 13th) and OPS (1.073, 15th)
Yasiel Puig, who has slugged all six home runs at home this
season, has batted .286 (18-for-63) with 12 runs, two
doubles and 17 RBI along with a .950 OPS in 17 games at
Dodger Stadium this year. He ranks among the NL leaders
in home runs (T-5th), RBI (T-7th) and slugging percentage
(.603, T-11th) at home this season.
ROSTER MOVES: The Dodgers today placed outfielder Andrew
Toles (torn right ACL) and left-handed pitcher Adam Liberatore
(left groin strain) on the 10-day disabled list, while recalling
infielder/outfielder Scott Van Slyke and outfielder Brett Eibner
from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Van Slyke returns to the big league
club after going 3-for-15 (.200) with a double and one RBI in four
games with Triple-A OKC, while Eibner will make his third stint
with Los Angeles after hitting .258 with three homers and 10 RBI
with OKC. Toles, who left last night’s game against the Pirates in
the top of the seventh inning with the right knee injury, has hit .271
with five homers and 15 RBI in 31 games with the Dodgers this
season. In two relief appearances with Los Angeles, Liberatore has
allowed one run in 1.1 innings (6.75 ERA) and has held batters to a
.200 average (1-for-5)
Right-handed pitcher Josh Ravin was also reinstated from
the disabled list today and has been optioned to Triple-A
OKC. Ravin, who started the season on the DL with a right
groin strain, appeared in four rehab games with Single-A
Rancho Cucamonga and the OKC Dodgers, allowing one
run in a combined 4.0 innings, while striking out eight and
not issuing a walk.
