STRIKING DISTANCE: The Dodgers’ come-from-behind, 3-2,
victory last night over the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks moved the
club into sole possession of second place in the National League West,
just a game behind the Snakes. Tonight will be the third contest of a
four-game series with Arizona and also the third of a seven-game
homestand (1-1), that also includes three games with the New York
Mets from Monday-Wednesday next week. Following the homestand
finale on Wednesday, the club heads back out on the road for a 10-game
trip beginning next week at Coors Field in Denver. The 10-day trek also
features stops in Cincinnati and St. Louis.
Prior to this weekend, the Dodgers and D-backs hadn’t met
since May 9, but the clubs have already played 14 times this
season with the Diamondbacks holding a 9-5 advantage thus
far. The Dodgers have lost 15 of their last 20 contests vs. the
Diamondbacks dating back to Aug. 29, 2017 (and not counting
L.A.’s three-game sweep in last year’s Division Series).
There is still time to take advantage of the Dodgers’ “LA
Determined” Labor Day Weekend Sale for this big series
against the first-place D-backs. The remaining two games
feature significant savings with tickets for tonight’s game
starting at just $25. Buy now at Dodgers.com/LADetermined.
SUPERSTAR: Dodger infielder Manny Machado went 0-for-4 last
night and is now hitting .272 (43-for-158) with nine homers, six
doubles, five stolen bases, 23 RBI and a .494 slugging percentage in 39
games with Los Angeles. Seven of those nine Dodger home runs have
come in the last 14 games since Aug. 15, including four in his last six
contests. Machado has been very good late in games:

In 18 games at Dodger Stadium this season, Machado is
hitting .275 (19-for-69) with five homers, two doubles, 11
runs scored, 11 RBI and a .897 OPS.
Machado is 3-for-5 with a homer against tonight’s D-backs’
starter, Patrick Corbin.
SITTING FLUSH: Dodger left-hander Clayton Kershaw will take the
mound for his 21st start of the season tonight as he looks to stay red hot
in the season’s second half. In his last outing, Kershaw allowed two
earned runs in a season-high tying 8.0 innings, but did not factor into
the decision vs. the San Diego Padres last Saturday. On the season, the
Dodger ace is 6-5 with a 2.39 ERA (33 ER/124.1 IP), to go along with
124 strikeouts (against just 20 walks) and a .222 opponents’ batting
average. Kershaw has 15 quality starts overall and has worked a quality
outing in nine of his last 10 times toeing the rubber. Among hurlers with
at least 20 starts this season, he ranks fourth in the National League in
ERA, while his 6.20 strikeout-to-walk ratio leads the league and his 1.00
WHIP is the fourth best on the Senior Circuit.
In 29 career starts against Arizona, Kershaw has gone 15-9
with a 2.53 ERA (51 ER/181.2 IP) and has held hitters to a
.213 average, while striking out 211 against just 53 walks. The
southpaw holds the second lowest career ERA (Madison
Bumgarner, 2.49) vs. the Snakes among qualifying pitchers
with 140.0 IP vs. Arizona and is tied with Matt Cain and Jason
Schmidt for second all-time in wins against the D-backs.
Since coming off the disabled list on June 23, Kershaw is 5-1
with a 2.15 ERA (18 ER/75.1 IP) and 71 strikeouts against just
nine walks in 12 starts. He has also limited the opposition to a
.215 average and posted a 0.92 WHIP.
In 27 August games, Dodger starters went 8-4 with a 2.53
ERA (45 ER/160.0 IP) and limited the opposition to a .213
average. The starters posted the lowest ERA in the Majors
during that span, while their WHIP (1.04) leads the National
League. The Dodger hurlers’ opponents’ batting average
(.213) and opponents’ OPS (.611) both ranked second in the
NL, trailing the Braves in both categories.
SHORING UP THE SQUAD: In addition to yesterday’s acquisition
of reliever Ryan Madson from the Nationals, the Dodgers also obtained
another World Series champion right before the Aug. 31 deadline in
infielder Daivd Freese, who comes over from the Pirates in exchange
for minor league infielder Jesus Manuel Valdez. Freese, who will wear
No. 25, has played in 94 games this season, hitting .282 with 29 runs,
10 doubles, nine homers and 42 RBI along with a .780 OPS. He has put
up similar splits against both right and left-handed pitchers, hitting .284
(31-for-109) against southpaws compared to a .280 (37-for-132) mark
against righties. In his career, Freese is hitting .300 (276-for-920) with
a .376 on-base percentage against left-handers. Defensively, he has
appeared in 55 games at third base and 15 games at first base this year,
posting a combined .977 fielding percentage.
THE CAVALRY HAS ARRIVED: In addition to Ryan Madson and
David Freese, the Dodgers made a flurry of moves today as roster
expansion takes hold for the month of September. The club recalled
infielder/catcher Kyle Farmer, infielder/outfielder Tim Locastro and
outfielders Andrew Toles and Alex Verdugo from Triple-A Oklahoma
City, while also reinstating left-handed pitcher Zac Rosscup and
infielder Chase Utley from the 10-day disabled list.
Among the four players recalled, Farmer, 28, makes his
second stint with L.A. after hitting .238 (15-for-63) with four
doubles and eight RBI in 32 games. With OKC this season, he
posted a .288/.333/.451 slashline with 24 doubles, seven home
runs and 36 RBI in 79 games. Locastro, 26, has appeared in
eight games with L.A. and in 83 games with the OKC Dodgers
this year, he hit .279 with 61 runs, 23 doubles, four homers,
25 RBI and 18 steals along with a .389 OBP. Toles, 26, returns
for his second stint in L.A. after appearing in seven games
with the Dodgers. In 71 games with Triple-A OKC this year,
he posted a .306/.345/.461 slashline with 17 doubles, seven
homers and 39 RBI. Verdugo, 22, has appeared in 14 games
with the Dodgers this season over two stints, hitting .280 (14-
for-50). The club’s No. 1 rated prospect by MLB.com was
named a PCL Mid and Post-Season All-Star and was also
selected to the 2018 All-Pacific Coast League team. In 91
games with OKC, he slashed .329 (4th, PCL)/.391/.472 with
44 runs, 19 doubles, 10 home runs and 44 RBI.
MR. AUGUST: Dodger third baseman Justin Turner put the finishing
touches on what could be a Player of the Month Award for August last
night, going 2-for-3 with the game-winning home run in the eighth
inning. Since being reinstated from the disabled list on Aug. 2, Turner
reached base safely in 24 of 25 games last month and hit .402 (39-for-
97) with 22 runs, 11 doubles, six home runs and 20 RBI. He collected
14 multi-hit games in those 25 contests and has also recorded two or
more hits in seven of his last 11 games.
Turner ranked among the Majors’ best in August:
Justin Turner, August Numbers w/MLB Ranks (min. 50 PA)
BA .402 (1st)
OBP .491 (1st)
SLG .722 (2nd)
OPS 1.213 (1st)
Hits 39 (T-2nd)
POWER SURGE: The Dodgers hit two more homers last night and
continue to lead the NL in longballs with 189, 10 more than the Brewers
in the National League and second in the Majors behind only the New
York Yankees (221).
