1.
2. WIN-DY CITY: The Dodgers continue a 10-game road trip (0-2)
with the third of four games against the Cubs at Wrigley Field,
after falling 1-0 last night in 10 innings. Following the four-game
set in Chicago, Los Angeles will head to Miami for a three-game
weekend series against the Marlins before concluding the trip with
three games against the D-backs at Chase Field.
Yasiel Puig has hit safely in all nine career games at
Wrigley Field (.486, 17-for-35), including seven multi-hit
games, and in 14 of 15 career games overall against the
Cubs, going 26-for-54 (.481) with 15 runs scored, four
doubles, a triple, three homers and seven RBI. He leads
active players (min. 50 AB) in career batting average
(.481), on-base percentage (.548) and slugging percentage
(.759) against Chicago:
Active Batting Avg. Leaders vs. Cubs (min. 50 PA)
1. Yasiel Puig .481 (26-for-54)
2. Paul Goldschmidt .383
3. Chris Johnson .352
4. Gordon Beckham .347
5. Miguel Cabrera .344
JOC JAMS: Joc Pederson has hit 19 home runs, the most ever by
a Dodger rookie before the All-Star break. Since 1933, only two
NL rookies have blasted 20 or more home runs before the All-Star
break, something Pederson has 18 games to accomplish:
NL Rookies, HR Before All-Star Break, Since 1933
1t. Dave Kingman, 1972 SF 21
1t. Albert Pujols, 2001 STL 21
3. Joc Pederson, 2015 LAD 19
4t. Mike Piazza, 1993 LAD 18
4t. Frank Robinson, 1956 CIN 18
Dodger hitting coach Mark McGwire holds the all-time
MLB rookie record with 33 home runs before the All-Star
break, doing so in 1987 with the Athletics.
Overall, Pederson ranks among the NL’s best in home
runs (19, T-4th
), walks (50, 3rd
), on-base percentage (.388,
8th
) and slugging percentage (.542, 7th
).
In part due to Pederson’s contributions, Los Angeles
continues to lead the National League with 93 home runs,
10 ahead of the Reds (83), while also topping the circuit
in walks (256) and on-base percentage (.332).
FEELING A DRAFT: Los Angeles has signed 28 of 42 draft
picks, most recently inking catcher Garrett Kennedy (14th
round)
out of the University of Miami, and also signed two non-drafted
free agents.
Three of the Dodgers’ top-five selections from the 2015
draft are squaring off in a rematch of last year’s College
World Series final as Vanderbilt pitchers Walker
Buehler (1st round) and Philip Pfeifer (3
rd round) take on
Virginia reliever Josh Sborz (compensation round B). In
Game 2 of the championship series last night, Pfeifer did
not allow an earned run (three unearned) in 5.2 innings,
but suffered the loss for Vanderbilt, while Sborz tossed
4.0 scoreless innings of relief and picked up the win for
Virginia. A decisive Game 3 will be played tonight in
Omaha, which Buehler is expected to start for Vanderbilt.
A LOOK BACK: Today marks the 60th
anniversary of Sandy
Koufax’s Major League debut in 1955, when he struck out two in
2.0 scoreless innings of relief for the Dodgers at Milwaukee.
On this date in 1947, Jackie Robinson stole home for the
first of 19 times for the Dodgers at Pittsburgh.
ON THE HILL: Today will be Chicago native Mike Bolsinger’s
second career start against the Cubs after allowing only an
unearned run on four hits and picking up the win in Arizona’s 5-2
win at Wrigley Field on April 24, 2014. Bolsinger has limited
opposing hitters to a .229 batting average in nine starts with the
Dodgers this year, including a .191 mark against right-handers (21-
for-110).
Zack Greinke made his second consecutive scoreless
start last night (13.0 scoreless innings), but did not factor
in the decision as he continued a winless stretch that now
spans nine starts since May 11. During that nine-start
span, Greinke is 0-2 with a 1.79 ERA (12 ER/60.1 IP) and
according to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is just the second
pitcher since earned runs were first compiled on official
scores (1912 in the N.L. and 1913 in the A.L.) to go
winless with an ERA below 2.00 in a nine-start span
within one season, joining Jeff Samardzija, who did it in
his first nine starts of the 2014 season with the Cubs (0-4,
1.62 ERA). Greinke has allowed no more than two runs in
eight of those nine starts.
The Dodgers continue to rank fourth in the Majors with a
3.33 team ERA, including a 3.43 mark by the club’s
starters (167 ER/438.0 IP, 5th
MLB).
GET VOTING!: Joc Pederson continued his ascent up the All-
Star voting charts, moving from eighth to sixth place in the most
recent National League balloting update released yesterday.
Adrian Gonzalez remains in second place among NL first
basemen, behind Paul Goldschmidt, while catcher Yasmani
Grandal (4th
) and outfielder Yasiel Puig (14th
) are also in the hunt
at their respective positions.
Gonzalez needs to make up over 2.5 million votes to
overtake Goldschmidt for the starting spot at first base,
but is likely to earn his fifth-career All-Star selection
regardless. He’s batting .297 with 22 doubles (1st, NL), 12
home runs (T-12th, NL), 45 RBI (T-6th
, NL) and a .521
slugging percentage (10th
, NL) in 71 games this season.
Pederson sits over 2.3 million votes behind Matt Holliday
for the third and final starting spot in the NL outfield, but
would also need to leapfrog the Giants’ Nori Aoki (4th
)
and the Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen (5th
). Bryce Harper
and Giancarlo Stanton currently lead balloting among NL
outfielders.
Don Mattingly will serve as a coach on the NL All-Star
field staff for the game, to be played Tuesday, July 14 at
Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.
The 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Ballot is available
exclusively online via Dodgers.com and mobile devices.
Voting closes on Thursday, July 2 at 8:59 p.m.
TEAM REHAB: Pedro Baez (right pectoral strain) and Paco
Rodriguez (left elbow strain) each tossed a scoreless inning for
Triple-A Oklahoma City in rehab appearances last night. Baez has
tossed 3.0 scoreless innings in three rehab outings with Oklahoma
City, while Rodriguez has fired 4.0 scoreless frames in his rehab
with OKC and Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.
Brandon League (right shoulder impingement) is
expected to make his eighth rehab appearance tonight for
Oklahoma City.
