NotesNotesNotesNotes...from the Cantor
Eighteen months ago, six adults in
our congregation made a
commitment to learn more about
Judaism and living a Jewish life.
We met on a regular basis and
studied topics across a wide
spectrum, from holidays to
Kashrut to wearing tallit and
tefillin. We delved into the ethics
of Jewish living, and the history of
who we are. Each adult also took on the responsibility
of learning how to participate in the Shabbat morning
service. I want to publicly thank them for sharing with
me their insights and teaching me along the way. And
so, I want to wish a Mazal Tov to:
Rosaria Arteaga
Dawn Doucette-Kaplan
Frances Erdman
RoseAnn Markowitz
Ilana Offenberger
Julia Yurovitzky
This has led me to think about B’Nai Mitzvah and the
word mitzvah in particular. Ask most people to define
the word mitzvah and they will say “a good deed”. My
standard answer has always been that the meaning of the
word is actually “commandment”. But maybe people
are not so far off with this defining of mitzvah as a good
deed.
The word mitzvah refers to the 613 mitzvot that G-d has
given us. These commandments, or laws, involve every
aspect of Jewish and everyday life. These include the
observance of Shabbat, kindness to animals, visiting the
sick, etc. When I took the time to think about mitzvot, I
came to realize that most mitzvot, directly or indirectly,
lead us to do a good act. Take, for example, attending
minyan. One attends minyan in order to pray, and
possibly say the Kaddish prayer. But by attending
minyan, you are also forming a community of ten
adults, allowing others to join in communal prayer.
Another example is lighting the Shabbat candles. At
first glance this is a simple act of lighting candles and
saying a blessing. But by saying this bracha, one
introduces Shabbat into the home, and helps to separate
this time for the whole family from the rest of the work
week. In this sense, doing a mitzvah is doing a good
deed. I therefore would like to make the following
suggestion. After reading this article, think about one
mitzvah that you would like to begin doing. It can be
once, or on a regular basis. There are many possibilities,
but I would like to suggest the following few:
State of the President
I can’t believe this is the last article I
will get to write for the Israelite. I want
to express my sincere gratitude for the
honor of being able to serve T.I. as
your president. Of course, it was much
easier than I imagined, given that I had
the good luck of being able to work
with our amazing clergy and volunteer
staff. The Rabbi’s patience (and his
educational support) have helped me
tremendously, and the Cantor’s
hugs (and ability to fundraise for
special projects) have together made being president not just
an honor, but a joy.
I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention how invaluable my
Executive Committee has been, as they have helped me
intelligently and thoughtfully navigate sometimes difficult
decisions. I want to spend most of this final article
summarizing some of the things we’ve accomplished together
over the course of my term. Perhaps least exciting, but deeply
important, I have reinstated a few T.I. committees. To list
some examples: the Beautification Committee, chaired by
Ellen Nelson, has made the building look more welcoming.
The Adult Education Committee, chaired by Dr. Ron
Weisberger, has brought new programs to T.I. This year’s
Yiddish series will end with a Klezmer concert you don’t want
to miss. Sue Levin has taken on the dues restructuring
program, which has looked to modernize our dues system, and
make TI accessible to everyone, regardless of their situation.
Marty Levin in particular, as House Chair, has had a lot of
issues to deal with, including, but not limited to solving issues
with the A.C units in the Chapel and Small Social Hall, many
roof problems, the skylight, lighting in the Large Social Hall,
and many more that I don’t have the space to list. I also need
to mention Ilene Jacobs and Paul Bacdayan, who have helped
the Negotiating Committee negotiate personnel contracts and
with O.S.S. I can’t say enough about Ilene’s knowledge and
work on the Investment Committee. Without her, T.I. would
not be where we are today financially, nor would we have as
bright a future as we do. In addition, I would like to specially
thank Stan Sherman and Dot Aghai, who have always been
available to help me. I (and they) know I have called upon
them more than once. The continuation of the O.S.S
Committee under Stan Sherman’s leadership is almost done,
and though it has been a long process, we want to do what is
best for T.I and for our continued relationship with O.S.S.
Speaking of calling, following the Rabbi’s suggestion, I made
calls to some of our congregants who don’t get out much to
see how they were doing during one of the many storms this
winter. I can’t begin to explain the feelings I got from these
wonderful congregants who were very happy to tell me that
they were O.K. I hope this is a tradition we continue, as our
community is made stronger when we reach out to one
another.

GershonLevine
It is hard to believe that I have been
your Executive Director for six
months; I guess there is truth to the
saying: “Time flies when you are
having fun!” Our electronic communications and social
media have evolved, and I will continue to experiment
with new methods to keep our messages and posts eye-
catching and informative. We have worked on, and
continue to work on, a variety of facility issues, since a
sixty-year old building has aches and pains. We have had
wonderful programming: Shabbat dinners, concerts,
movies and lectures, which were fun, entertaining and
informative. From a budgetary point of view, we have
kept a good eye on our expenses and strive to bring in as
much income as possible.
It is time to look ahead. During the summer, the Jewish
community tends to shut down for summer vacation,
especially in the Northeast. After all, we survived winter,
we deserve a break! Tifereth Israel of course will be
open for business with daily services, Kabballat
Shabbatot on the Beach, an August Barbecue not to be
missed! So while we will enjoy the summer, it will still
be busy at TI! With Rosh Hashanah starting on Sunday
September 9, the office staff and I will spend these next
several months preparing for the coming year. We will
be putting together the Community Bulletin, the Memory
Book and taking care of all the details that make up the
High Holiday Season at TI. Committees will be putting
together their programming, the details of which you will
hear about before the Holidays. We do this to create a
vibrant, spiritual and open synagogue for you, our TI
community. We just ask for your active participation and
support.
Thank you for all you have done for the community over
the past year. As we look toward 5779, come for
services, programs and, of course, a dinner or two. Get
active and share your expertise by joining the committee
of your choice. Financially support your community
through your membership, the High Holiday Appeal and
other fundraising opportunities. Together, we are the
Tifereth Israel Family!
EducationallySpeaking The Ziskind School of Judaism just
ended the 2017-2018 year. It was the
busiest year ever filled with education,
the arts, Yiddishkeit, and more.
You should know….
Mitzvah Day was organized by Liz
and Ken Ackerman. A group of students
made soup for the homeless shelter. The
next day, the Ackerman and Herman
families took the soup to the shelter and
served it. I have learned that the
Hermans continued this volunteer
activity, even after Mitzvah Day!
Dot Aghai took a few students to Lighthouse Shelter, a no-
kill animal shelter in New Bedford. The students volunteered
by doing some much needed cleanup. If you’ve never been
there, it is a wonderful, loving shelter. We adopted our dog
Ender from this shelter.
The students created T-shirts to show their Ziskind School
spirit. We wear them proudly on our field trips and special
occasions.
Every year, we welcome a Jewish Artist in Residence. This
year, our artist was Rena Deneault. Rena introduced the
students to the works of Alexander Calder. The students then
created their own Judaica mobiles. They came out amazing!
This past spring we experienced Polka Dot Yoga with Lynda
Jacobvitz; the theme was Passover. It is amazing how Lynda
was able to create a Passover Yoga Hour. The kids made very
unique shapes with their bodies, stretching and exercising
while learning.
The snow held off just a bit this year so we could have our
Model Seder at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent
Home. This was one of the best Model Seders to date. The
students and residents joined in singing Ma Nishtana, Echad
Mi Yodea and Chad Gad Ya. They also interacted, coming up
with beautiful insights about the Passover story.
Purim this year was amazing! The students read the best they
have ever done, and many took on extra lines. We are proud of
the priority that the students place on chanting from the
Megillah. It shows their confidence in public chanting, and
their grasp of Hebrew Reading. The students also were
involved in making and sharing Shalach Manot - food gifts for
the synagogue community. Not only did the boxes look bright
and cheerful, but the treats inside were yummy as well.
Every Sunday, we have music with the Cantor. Whether it is
learning a song for the service, or singing “My hat it has three
corners”, my personal favorite, the students are always
involved and sing beautifully.
In February, as part of World Wide Wrap, our students
learned to put on Tefillin They had the support of the
madrichim, classroom aides, and members of the minyan. It
was a great learning opportunity.
On Sundays, beginning this year, we have the “Yiddish
Word of the Week”. I introduce a new word or expression to
the school and we try to use the words we have learned in our
lives. For example, we had a lot of fun with “Alta Kocker” or
as we learned it: Alta Kocker-spaniel! Shana Punim was
another favorite as I never got tired of pinching Ezra’s cheeks
and calling him a “Shana Punim” (which he most certainly is!)

NotesContinuedfrompage3
• Say the Shema before you go to bed. It is a beau-
tiful way to end the day. For those of you who may
have forgotten, the first line of the Shema is as fol-
lows: Shema Y israel Adonai Eloheinu Adonai
Echad, Hear O Israel, the Lord is our G-d, the
Lord is One.
• Light Shabbat candles. It takes only a moment
of your time, but can truly change the feeling of
your home.
• Bikur Cholim – visit someone who is sick. Take
the time to visit someone who may be ailing, or
make a visit to a local convalescent home. You will
leave feeling enriched.
• Attend a minyan – we have services at Tifereth
Israel congregation every day of the year, morning
and evening.
I look forward to hearing from you about which new
mitzvot you have discovered.
EducationallySpeakingContinuedfrompage4
Did you know that members of our community are involved
in a Mentor Shabbat Program with the Rabbi? It is a two-year
commitment where we arrange for 6th graders to pair up with
members of the congregation to sit with at services a couple of
times a month. They are then mentored as they follow the
service together. I know this has created great bonds with the
students, especially my own!!
I always enjoy seeing the ruach (spirit) that our students
bring to the Ziskind School, and the community as a
whole. We at Tifereth Israel are so blessed to have such won-
derful, supportive families willing to reach out beyond the
school and bring Yiddishkeit to others.
StateofthePresidentContinuedfrompage3
On a different phone related note, with Dot’s help we reinstat-
ed the phone tree, which I’m sure you’ve discovered allows us
to call congregants to remind them about some of our events.
If you would like calls or would like to be one to make calls(!)
please let me know.
This leads me to one of the amazing upcoming events orga-
nized by the Programing Committee. You don’t want to miss
the annual Pot Luck Dinner on May 4th. May the forth be with
you.
Finally, we are continuing to work on securing solar panels for
our parking lot. I hope that this will be starting soon, as it is an
exciting way to move T.I into the future as well as providing
additional revenue. Helping us move into this bright future is
Gershon Levine, our new Executive Director. Gershon has
only been with us a short while, but has already contributed so
much. I look forward to seeing all the new ideas he has in store
for T.I.
I am deeply sorry if I did not mention someone who has con-
tributed to my successful presidency, but so much has hap-
pened these last two years it would have been impossible to
list it all here. So this is the end of this article, and while it
isn’t quite the end of my presidency, I have to say that I could
not have done it without all of you. Thank you all so much for
everything. I look forward to our new president, Ellen Hull,
continuing to keep T.I. moving forward, and T.I. continuing to
be a place we all want to, and are able, to be.
Have a wonderful summer, Cheryl.
Sisterhood Plans for Busy Spring
Our Sisterhood Book Club has been branching out to read a
more diverse selection of good books. In March, we dis-
cussed The Tumbling Turner Sisters by Juliette Fay. It’s
historical fiction about a family of unlikely Vaudeville play-
ers in 1919. In April, we discussed the new bestseller set in
Alaska, The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah. As there was
no Book Club in May, readers will have until June 27 to
read our next selection, which is longer than our average
book. The Weight of Ink by Rachel Kadish, set in London
around 1660, is the interwoven tale of two brilliant women:
one who is permitted to scribe for a blind Rabbi and one
who is an ailing historian with a love of Jewish history. It is
a sophisticated work of historical fiction unraveling a mys-
tery to determine a document’s scribe, the elusive “Aleph.”
Sisterhood Book Club meets the last Wednesday of each
month at 2:00 PM at Marsha Onufrak’s home. We are al-
ways delighted to welcome new members for a lively dis-
cussion and a little nosh. Please contact Phyllis Bornstein to
be added to the email list to receive information about books
and meetings. It’s a great Jewish connection.
While only a handful of Sisterhood members attended the
Judy Gold performance at the Z in March, those who did
could relate to her Jewish humor, stories about raising chil-
dren, her Jewish mother quotes, and barbs about current
events. (Next time we’ll be more selective in choosing a G-
rated performer.)
Another beautiful Sisterhood/Men’s Club Shabbat was held
in April, celebrating Israel’s 70th birthday! It was so nice to
honor this milestone and enjoy a lovely Oneg Shabbat.
Thanks to all who participated in the service, and donated to
the Oneg Shabbat; and to Carol Marlin for a meaningful
D’var Torah. (Continued on the right)
(Continued) Sisterhood members had an opportunity to get
discounted tickets to the annual Author’s Brunch, focusing on
biographies written by three prominent authors: Megan Mar-
shall; Susan L. Mizruchi; and Leigh Montville.
Members and guests enjoyed our annual Sylvia Finger Study
Day led by Rabbi Elan Babchuk, and our lovely Torah Fund
Luncheon, honoring Barbara Queen as our Woman of Distinc-
tion, our Light of Torah. Thanks to those who have sent in
their Torah Fund donation! Please add your support to help
educate future rabbis, cantors, and Jewish educators. You can
mail your check to either Marsha Zeitz or Marsha Onufrak.
Plus, you can contact Barbara Gotlib or Susan Barnet to send
a Torah Fund card.

According to Jewish tradition, the anniversary of a dear one’s death is to be observed with honor to their memory. Kaddish is recited and the Yahrzeit light is kindled on the eve of the Yahrzeit day.
We send notices of Yahrzeit dates to all those who have requested these reminders, as well as list the names on our quarterly Yahrzeit calendars.
If you would like to be notified of these anniversary dates of your loved ones, please contact the TI office [508-997-3171] or [email protected].

Tribute Opportunities
There are many recognition opportunities in our kehillah (congregation) to honor or memorialize somebody.
Tree of Life
As one enters Founders Hall from the front doors, our Tree of Life plaque can be found on the left,
just before the hallway to the Chapel and Small Hall. An engraved leaf can be purchased and mounted
on the tree for $1,000 for a large leaf, or $500 for a small leaf.
Yahrzeit Plaque
The Tifereth Israel Yahrzeit plaques can be found in the back of the Sanctuary, left side (as one faces the bima). It is traditional to honor the memory of a family member with a
plate on the plaque after his or her passing. Engraved yahrzeit plates can be purchased for $350. The plate will hang on the plaque during the Hebrew
anniversary month of your loved one’s passing.
Building Fund
Plates are available to be mounted on the plaques on the right side (as one enters the building through the front
doors) of Founders Hall. Prices for engraved plates range from $1,200 to $20,000, depending on the size of the plate.
See Gershon for details.
Outdoor Column
For the ultimate way to honor someone, engraving of an outdoor column (in the front of the synagogue) can be purchased by an individual or a group of individuals for $100,000. There are only two such opportunities left.
Our General Fund
Did you know that the General Fund is the source of funding for operating costs here at
Tifereth Israel? While some funds are restricted to specific uses, the General Fund can be used
for any need, whenever it arises.
We appreciate your thoughtfulness when you make a donation. We want to be able to
continue to provide
everything you expect from your synagogue.
