Tiger TimesMission: At Eugene Field School, we challenge and inspire

students to become productive and successful citizens.

Dear Field Families,

With the second semester well under way, we want to thank everyone for your continued support of our students, teachers, and school as we collectively strive to provide optimal opportunities for learning each and every day. In addition, we want to also welcome our new families to Field and trust that you will find yourselves as part of an outstanding and supportive learning community.

I also want to thank our families for your diligence in having your students at school on-time and well-prepared for learning each day. In addition, please continue to be mindful that our students’ academic day continues until dismissal each afternoon and it is very important that students are not dismissed early unless an unavoidable appointment or emergency is involved as valuable instruction from the teacher can be missed in addition to required assignments. As always, thank you for supporting the wonderful teaching and learning taking place here at Field!

Do your children come home and talk about Character Kids? Each month a dedicated team of 19 6th grade students go into classrooms and deliver the character word for the month. These Character Kids meet prior to their teaching day to plan their lesson. These students create bookmarks, notepads, posters and amazing lessons based on the particular word. This month the Character Kids will be teaching all about the word Honesty. Teaching good character traits is very important to myself and the team of Character Kids who take their job very seriously. Each month they make Field a better school and introduce students to better ways to be of good character. I encourage you to ask your child what the Character Kids do and what they have learned!

From the Clinic:

NATIONAL CHILDREN’S DENTAL

HEALTH MONTHFebruary is National

Children’s Dental Health Month. During this

month the American Dental Association wants

to remind everyone of the importance of keeping your teeth

healthy. It is important not only to your oral

health but also to your overall health and appearance. If you

currently do not have a dentist, this would be a great time to find one. So always remember to brush, floss, and limit

those sugary foods and drinks!

In December, Tiger Choir took off to spread holiday cheer by singing loud for all to hear! They visited 3 nursing facilities and stopped off at CiCi’s for lunch! Fun outing!

From the Reading Connection-Tips for Reading Success

Real-life Writing for Primary Grades

Often times children interrupt us while on the phone. One day, a parent gave her daughter a pencil and paper. She told her to write a note if she needed something that wasn’t an emergency, and she would answer after she hung up.

The daughter liked the idea, and the mother quickly realized it was a good way for her to work on writing and spelling. So she started thinking of other reasons for her to write.

For example, when they had dinner guests, she would ask her to make place cards. The daughter wrote people’s names on the folded index cards and put them at their places at the table. She has also had her post reminder notices on the refrigerator, like “Tomorrow is trash day” or “Early dismissal Friday.”

Her daughter still writes when she’s on the phone, and sometimes she writes notes even when she’s not. She is glad she is getting extra writing practice-and that she is able to juggle work and family.

*If your student has forgotten their password please contact their teacher and they can give it to you.

All grades test students regularly to determine their reading levels either by giving DIBELS, TRC, or the SRI. Teachers always look for improvement and mastery of skills. During “Tiger Den” time, which is at the end of every day and during reading time,

they receive extra help in the form of interventions specific to the areas of weakness. Enrichment is also implemented so every

student’s needs are met.

Around the classrooms:

Kdgn: Kindergarten students have been working in a science unit on weather. As part of the unit, the following question was posed to the students: Which of the four types of weather fills the rain gauge the most? They then viewed an online simulation of different types of weather to see how much each one filled the rain gauge. As the students viewed the simulation for each weather type (heavy thunderstorm, light thunderstorm, cloudy skies, and sunny skies), we recorded the data on large chart paper. Students used the CER (Claim – Evidence – Reasoning) approach to explain what they learned from this investigation. It was a fun learning experience!

1 st : Our 100th day of school was January 31, 2017. The 100th day was a great time to have fun with the number 100 by exploring, counting, sorting, patterning, measuring and various other math skills and concepts.

Some activities we did in first grade include counting 100 objects, exploring with place value up to 100, reading books about the 100th day of school, discussing and reading about different ways to make 100, drawing 100 objects, listing things we have learned (since we are 100 days smarter) and even making 100th day hats!

We had fun and learned a lot about 100!

(This article even had 100 words )

2 nd :

As we recover from the holiday break and dive a little deeper into 3 rd quarter, 2nd grade students ve settled back into the routine of things. As learners of science, we have been learning about and researching the Earth’s surface. Students are gaining a deeper understanding of the Earth’s seven (7) continents and five (5) oceans. In conjunction with this, students will be turning their ocean research into a realistic narrative writing piece. In math, we are continuing to work on subtraction with regrouping and place value. Students are honing in on their ability to use the subtraction strategies

taught in class and are doing so with confidence and ease.

3 rd : Third graders have been busy this month writing our “Best classroom Pet” opinion pieces. We also celebrated Martin Luther King Day. We did several close reads and students responded analytically their opinion as to whether or not his dream has come true. Our focus in math has been on multiple digit addition and subtraction. We are wrapping up our study of electricity in Science and will soon start our unit on magnets.

4 th :

4th grade has been working on Narrative Writing. We are learning about writing plots for mystery stories, and have chosen  the book, “The Mysteries of Harris Burdick” to introduce our stories. Students chose from a selection of intriguing photos, and came up with a story plot to explain the photo. We are really enjoying this writing unit!

5 th : Fifth grade has been working very hard since they have returned from break! The students have been working on long division and dividing with decimals in math. In Language Arts,

Keep clipping those Box Tops! Page 9 of 10

the students are working to identify the point of view of a passage. They have also been working on finding the main idea of a text and finding key details to support it.

On Monday, January 23, the fifth grade students participated in the school spelling bee. They all did a great job! Jackson Glueck got first place, Ava Healy earned second place, and Craig Houston got third place. Jackson and Ava will be moving on to the county spelling bee in February. We wish them the best of luck!

6 th : We are deep into our unit on inferences. Students work on their inferring skills each year, so we wanted to strengthen the skills they already had and challenge them with unfamiliar rigorous text.  We started this unit with some traditional literature.  We read some excerpts of texts from Mark Twain,

Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Dickens.  We wrapped up this unit with a book study of the Holocaust.  This worked great for students to make inferences because they had to build up their background knowledge.  As a class, we read the bookHana’s Suitcase. We enjoyed this book a lot and look forward to seeing the play on February 7th at the Coterie Theater.  Students picked a book and worked in a small group to read, discuss and analyze the text.  We are very pleased with the progress the students have made during this unit!
