IT IS THE GETTING-READY-FOR-THE-DRIVING SEASON time of the year.

In early March I attended the Zone President’s meeting hosted in Colorado Springs by the Alpine Mountain Region. It is always interesting to hear the challenges of other regions. Of the seven regions in the zone, RMR is by far the largest with 1600 primary and 2500 including affiliate members. Region sizes vary quite a bit with the smallest being only 18 members.

This year’s new membership social was held on March 11th at 3zero3 Motor Sports and was well attended. We had tables set up to explain all our activities for both new and old members alike. Thanks to all that came out and to all the volunteers who helped staff the tables! Thanks to the generosity of our members, we collected $306 for a donation to Make-a-Wish Colorado, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

We held our annual DE Instructor refresher training with about 100 instructors present on March 25th. Our instructors are required to attend this refresher every two years to maintain their certification. We reviewed lessons learned from last season and discussed methods to sharpen our skills to make us better instructors. Also, joining us were six new instructor candidates that will join our ranks this year. I have personally found instructing to be a very rewarding experience.

By the time you read this, we will have held out first ‘HPDE/Autocross 101’ class. We have over 50 drivers currently signed up for this event. The purpose for new participants is to learn how to register for events, how to prepare your car for the track, what is an autocross, and much more. We think this will be a great introduction for those interested in participating in these events.

Registration for Parade events will open during the week of April 3rd. If you are planning to attend, this is the time to sign up for your

Pres Presidential Thoughts

John Mackin, President events. If you are a first-timer it can be a bit of a daunting process to select from the wide array of options available. It is best to study the website ahead of time to determine what you are interested in prior to starting the registration process.

Parade should be quite an event this year. Unlike the past two Parades that were held in resorts that were in remote areas, this year we are in downtown Spokane which has many things to do outside of Parade scheduled events. Florence and I will be heading out there for a pre-planning visit in April to make final banquet arrangements.

Our April Membership Social will be held at Wine Country Motor Sports on April 6th.

Several of our driving events are now open for registration on motorsportreg.com including Autocross School and Autocross on April 29-30 and our first HPDE at High Plains on May 6-7. AMR also has opened most of their driving events for registration. Register early and often!

Plans are progressing for our Holiday Party. The event will be held at Willow Ridge Manor in Morrison on December 9th. It is a great facility which we will have all to ourselves. We have not yet set the pricing, but hope to keep it more reasonable than the last few we have held. We have not had a Holiday Party in two years and are looking for great attendance and a highly successful event. Save the date on your calendars now.

See you out there!

DID YOU MISS IT? The New Member Orientation and Monthly Social that is! We had a great turnout even though it was a little cold, cloudy and wet outside! About 200 people turned out! Some came to learn about the club, some to meet fellow members and socialize, and some turned out to become members! I even had one gentleman tell me he had been a member for over 50 years, and this was his first social event! I’m very happy you came! We were able to hand out some stellar gifts from our host, 3zero3 Motorsports, as well from Adam’s Polishes and The Man Cave Detail.

I want to thank everyone (chairs and volunteers) who showed up to be on hand answering questions about your area of interest in the club. And a big "Thank You" from RMR to our host, 3zero3 Motor Sports, for having staff on hand for questions, helping with sign in, and doing such a great job of helping us put on this crazy fun event! Well done everyone!

As for those who ordered name badges, I plan on having them available at the DE101 on April 1st! Sign up for this class and I will hand them out after! Just go to motorsportreg.com to sign up! Also, I will be at the April 6th social at Wine Country Motor Sports. Hope to see everyone soon!

Driving season is here! We have our first tour, the Edelweiss Spring Tour; our first Autocross event, RMR Autocross and School; and our first track day in early May, the HPR Stick n Paddle DE. Watch for emails for the latest on

upcoming events or visit the RMR website. Hopefully you will try some new things this year!

NAME BADGE ANYONE? If you ordered a name badge back in March 2016, please

send me an email! [email protected] you don’t have a name badge and would like one, please

2017 AUTOCROSS SCHOOL ANDMAY DAY AUTOCROSS EVENT

Front Range Airport

Saturday April 29 – Autocross School and Car Control ClinicSunday April 30 – Autocross

Mark your calendars for our first autocross event of 2017. Both the autocross school and the autocross will be held at the Front Range Airport where there is plenty of room to setup a long course with a lot of interesting autocross features. Twists, Turns, and Slaloms all await you to improve and challenge your driving skills.

If you are new to the club, new to your Porsche or other favorite four-wheel means of transport and want to improve your driving technique or simply want to enjoy your Porsche, we encourage you to register for the Autocross School and Car Control Clinic on Saturday April 29 and the full Autocross on Sunday April 30.

Are you familiar with Autocross? Autocross is a performance driving experience conducted in a safe environment at relatively low speeds. You will not hurt your car and more importantly you will not hurt yourself. Autocross is a lot fun and provides small doses of adrenaline rush that will keep you smiling for days. Come out to the school on Saturday and learn to autocross with our experienced instructors. What will happen is you will gain additional confidence in your driving ability, learn the limits of your car’s braking capabilities, practice correct seating, hand, feet and vision positions, as well as push and perhaps exceed the limits of your tire’s adhesion capabilities.

By the way, autocross is a social event and a great time to meet new club members and visit with friends.

Autocross School and Car Control ClinicOur excellent club instructors will work with you by providing

plenty of driving time through three car control exercises. Learn about car balance through a slalom course, throttle steering around two skid pads, and threshold braking and acceleration in a unique triangle exercise. All of this in the morning followed by an afternoon of learning how to autocross using these skills on a full scale autocross course.

PCA parents, remember the School and the Autocross are both open to licensed 16 and 17 year olds. Do you want to be the BEST PARENT EVER? Register your teenager for the school. We always have an instructor in the car and the skills they learn are directly applicable to the street.

Autocross on SundayOn Sunday, we return to the Front Range Airport facility to run

against the clock! Are you the quickest air cooled 911, Boxster, Turbo, 914, Cayenne? Run times are around a minute, which is a long time to hold your breath if you haven’t attended the school to learn how to breathe! This event is a great chance to try out your new found skills from the school and to compete against your friends.

DetailsRegistration is open and closes April 28. Click the RMR Event

Registration link on the club home page rmr.pca.org.Remember, autocross events are open to licensed 16 and 17 year

olds. RMR Junior Participation forms and instructions can be found under the forms tab on the club’s website. Please read them carefully.

The Autocross School is limited to 50 participants. Please register early to assure your spot.

Walk-ins will be accepted for Sunday (cash and check payments only), but pre-registration for both events is appreciated as it allows us to plan for “beer thirty” as well as organize the event and obtain volunteers.

A Porsche is not required. Only SUVs with a Porsche badge are permitted and no pickups. Convertibles are just fine and you can run

them with the top down.Restrooms are available onsite, however no concessions are

available nor are any nearby. Please remember to bring your own lunch and non-alcoholic drinks during the day. Refreshments will be served at the end of each day. Coffee and rolls each morning.

You will need a Snell-rated 2010 or newer helmet. Motorcycle helmets with this designation are acceptable. The club will have several loaner helmets available.

Show Us Your Car!You have found the greatest group of car nuts on the planet. Our monthly meetings are

loaded with food, beverages, networking with like-minded Porsche People and much technical and social camaraderie. Some of the venues we’ve been to before, and some places are new to us. All are interesting and fun.

It’s all about the people. We all share the love of anything Porsche-related. From real racing or just driving fast in a controlled environment like on the track or autocross, to meeting a mechanic or owner of a car just like yours for a chat about problems and solutions, to washing and waxing in preparation for the weekend tour or car show, you’ve found the most precious resource for the care of your car and hobby.

Show us your car! Let’s see your smiling face! How about a photo of your “garage queen’s” throne room! Share photos from your favorite drive; share the story of your hunt for the favorite car; share the triumph of your first rebuild. That story and those pictures are worth immortalizing in print.

We’ve all been there; maybe you’re experiencing the newness of that first special car. Perhaps you’re climbing the ranks in a competitive series of races. Have you found the perfect wash and wax routine to deliver the trophy? (Some secrets are worth sharing.)

The point is that the club’s members are its true strength. Your membership is your key to unlocking the wealth of knowledge and friendship the club represents. The membership socials are the first step to a deeper understanding, a deeper relationship with your vehicle. Come share the experience!

The red rock formations of South Valley Park serve as a beautiful backdrop to my 2013 Boxster S. I’ve owned this 981 for only about six months, so my wife Pat and I have a lot more seat time ahead of us, on the highway, back roads, and on the track. About 30 years ago, after my friend let me drive his 1973 911 I was hooked! After a concentrated search, I found my first Porsche, a 1977 911S. I really loved that car, albeit with a serious transmission problem. I’ve always said, “Life is short and there are too many great cars to experience”, so I let it go. With a young family, cars with a real back seat were more practical. There was a BMW M5, a couple of Mustangs, an Audi S4 and numerous others. Now, after a long hiatus, my second Porsche. The smiles are non-stop with this one. Safe travels and I hope to see you at the track or maybe at one of the social events.

Heritage Fire is quickly becoming one of the top highlights of the Food & Wine Classic weekend with its spectacular whole-animal, live-fired food, beautiful mountain scenery and plenty of Colorado sunshine.

We will do an easy drive on Friday from Colorado Springs (still including Independence Pass) which will include lunch and will get us to Snowmass early afternoon so you can enjoy the amenities at the Crestwood Condominiums. Friday dinner will also be included. On Saturday morning, join us for a half day tour up to our favorite lunch location at the Living Farm Café in Paonia. We will be back Saturday in the early afternoon so everyone has time to relax before heading across the street to the Heritage Fire Event (participants have option of purchasing Heritage Fire Tickets or dining on their own). This wonderful three-hour dining event will conclude the amazing weekend. Registration on MotorsportReg.com will offer the base tour (including lodging on Friday and Saturday night in beautiful one bedroom condominiums) and an option to purchase discounted Heritage Fire tickets.

Looking forward to those who can join us!

Your tour hosts Dwight & Dana Kasten ([email protected] for any questions).

Pres Track Talk

Dan Carlson, Leader – Chief Driving Instructor Committee

AUTOCROSS THE STORY – WHO, WHAT, WHERE, HOW AND MOST IMPORTANTLY WHY?

Our guest columnist this month is Chris Sulley, CDI Committee Member, RMR Autocross Ambassador & RMR's 2011 Distinguished Driver Award Winner.

Welcome to April’s edition of the CDI article for HighGear. As a member of the CDI committee and the unofficial RMR ambassador for autocross, I was elected to contribute this month’s article. The timing is excellent as our autocross school is scheduled for Saturday April 29th followed on April 30th by our first of three autocross events in 2017. Plus, our friends in AMR have a couple of events on their calendar.

I wasn’t sure where to start, so like all want-a-be millennials that may be a 'few' years past the cutoff, I Googled "autocross" to see what others have written about it. Wow, there are some enthusiastic autocross nut cases in the world. Hopefully I can do the crowd justice, while informing and perhaps entertaining along the way. I think the best approach is to follow the order in the title.

Who - That would be YOU! If you have a Porsche and I know you do because you are reading this article, you need to experience autocross. Porsches are built to turn and Porsche drivers are meant to smile! Enough said.

What – The most succinct phrase I can find to define autocross would be Autocross is the Art of Turnology. A course is setup in a large parking lot using soft, squishy, orange traffic cones or in our case an open tarmac at Front Range Airport – oops, I just jumped ahead to the Where category. That is OK as the how and why are much more exciting. The course is designed to include slaloms, turns, straights and other features to promote a fun driving experience in a safe environment. The goal is to negotiate the course quickly, while avoiding knocking down the car friendly cones or missing features in the course. All runs through the course are timed and participants either compete against their own best time, against like cars, a friendly autocrossing rival or quite frankly, simply come out for the experience to improve their driving skills and enjoy the day. When we say no experience is necessary we mean it. We always have instructors available to jump in your car with you and teach you the art, show you the course, cheer you on or add ballast to make you make you comfortable. Our goal is for you to have a great experience and come back for more.

How – Such a good question and so many ways to answer it. Before I go all technical on you let’s get the basics out of the way. Step one – Register for the event at http://pcarockymtn.MotorsportReg.com. Step two – Review the autocross section of our RMR website and the list of items you may want to bring with you to an autocross, along with a few tips on how to prep your car. Now let’s not let the prep the car step scare you. We are talking about removing all loose items from the interior and the boots, along with making sure you have a little bit of rubber left on the tires and a limited amount of fluid leaking. Notice the

term limited leaking. Some of us drive 30 year or older cars and a little leaking is part of the charm of these Porsches. There could be a prostate joke in there somewhere, but knowing my audience I’m going to let that go…so to speak.

How about a little technical stuff? I'm going to throw a few terms at you. After all, this is a serious newsletter and I would be remiss if I didn't overload you with fancy driving terms. So here you go: Load sensitivity. Grip per unit of load curve. Tire adhesion. Oversteer (push). Understeer (loose). Threshold braking. I could explain all of these, but I only get one page in the newsletter. Let me sum them all up in a few words. If you put all of these terms together you can pretty much come up with the following: How good are you at squishing the rubber in your tires into the pavement underneath you? The better you can do it, without sliding your tires, the faster you will be at autocross.

Speaking of tires, the number one question I get is what to do with tire pressures. Google it! If you find 100 sites (and you will) you will get 100 opinions. I’m going to do you a big favor and give you the right answer, right here and right now. Take the stock settings for your Porsche and increase them by 3 to 4 pounds. This may not (is not) be good advice for a Driver’s Education event, but in Autocross there is very little heat generated to bring tires up to pressure to keep the sidewalls from compressing or rolling over. As long as you are not wildly overdriving the car you should have a little bit of oversteer – yup the backend wants to overtake the front end. Caution - not too much oversteer - just a little bit “snappy” is good. You overcome oversteer on an autocross course by remembering gas is always your best friend and stepping on the 'loud' pedal should set you in motion in the correct direction. Seriously, for most of us, set the tire pressures and forget about them. Concentrate on driving by focusing on looking ahead, leaning into the gas and the brake pedal, rather than jabbing at the controls and smoothly turning the wheel, rather than sawing it side to side.

Why – The number one reason to autocross is the adrenaline thrill. The second reason is because autocross is a safe and very low impact way to enjoy your Porsche and third, you will not only improve your high performance driving skills, you will also improve your daily driving habits making you safer on the street.

So in conclusion, Register, Show Up, Help Out and Drive!Keep on Driving! Your CDI committee.

The funnest RMR event of the year is back!

RMR’s annual gimmick rally, Rally Quest, is on Sunday, May 21st. Always lots of fun, the route will be in the Broomfield/Boulder area with door prizes, a Porsche poker run, and awards for the winners!

The adventure starts at 9:30 AM at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley

which is also the recipient charity for this fundraiser! Rally Quest is a non-timed, scavenger hunt-style course that will take about 90 minutes from start to finish and covers approximately 60 miles. It ends at Gordon Biersch German Brewery Restaurant at Flatirons Crossing (what great food!) where winners will be announced and a private lunch awaits. For questions or to volunteer (PLEASE!), contact the Rally Quest Event Chairs, David and Jody Schmidt, at 303.662.1162 or email [email protected].

Savethe Date! Only 40 cars

are allowed to

participate!

Can your team get a winning Porsche

poker hand?

The rally kicks off with four Porsches launched out at a time (randomly drawn from the door prize ticket), every four minutes. Rally participants will be given a large envelope containing clues to where they must go to find their rally stop and retrieve their poker card. There are two other games going on concurrently during the Poker Run: Color Chip Trivia and Road Sign Word Jumble (sorry, can’t give away too much - details will be given out during the actual event).

Unlike typical poker runs, the goal here is to collect just THREE CARDS from the five that you will draw that are also Porsche models: 356, 911, 914, 918, 718, 924, 928, 944, 959 or 968. Sorry, older Boxster and Cayman owners; 986, 987 and 981 don’t count, nor do versions of the 911 such as 993, 996, 997 or 991 (also, no racing models such as 935). To win the Porsche Poker Run portion of the rally, participants must achieve the best hand as indicated below which shows the ranking of the best hands in order.

918 959 356 911

The ultimate hand would have all three cards in the SAME SUIT (for example; a 9, 1, and 8 all in spades). The remaining extra two cards are essentially worthless, but in the case of a tie, the next highest card would determine the winner. Should no participants collect any of the above top four hands, the following complete overall ranking order of Porsche Poker hands will be followed: 918, 959, 356, 911, 718, 928, 968, 944, 914 and, finally, 924 (based on marketplace value/collectability of actual Porsche models).

SPECIAL FUND-RAISER OPPORTUNITY! In the event your team returns with a non-winning hand, participants can donate $10 to the charity per card they want to turn in and blindly draw from the “dealer’s deck” at the final stop in an effort to create a winning hand. As an added incentive, this special deck will retain its TWO JOKER CARDS that are considered wild!

19APRIL 2017

"FUELED BY VOLUNTEERS" is something you hear a lot when you hang around PCA events, probably second only to “It’s not just about the cars, it’s about the people.” After attending my first ever PCA semi-annual board meeting, I now have another level of appreciation for “Fueled by Volunteers.” Until now, my perspective on this claim was limited to participation in my local region here in Utah. The recent meeting in Los Angeles took my understanding to a whole new level. The level of passion, talent, and collective dedication to make a great car club, is something from which we all benefit as individual members of PCA. The impact is far more than I imagined – and I had my sights set pretty high from the very start. It is most impressive - all of the way from the individual committee leads up to the EC members who all have full time “day” jobs, and probably give an additional 20-30 hours per week to PCA. I left the meeting feeling pretty humbled. Porsche Cars of North America treated meeting attendees to an evening at the new Porsche Experience Center. What a delight. If you find yourself on the south side of the left coast, I would highly recommend that you sign up and enjoy the experience.

In Colorado Springs, during the first weekend in March, I had an opportunity to practice what I learned in “PCA University” (aka Zone rep training) with the region Presidents, Vice Presidents and Newsletter Editors from Zone 9. It was an enjoyable time to meet with familiar and new faces from around the zone. The meeting was packed with content, and I’m confident that attendees took back some solid ideas to make regions just a little better for each member. With help from Aaron Ambrosino, PCA’s National Treasurer, we focused our presentations on social media, insurance and risk management, the Teen Survival Skills program offered by Tire Rack, activity subsidies for

regions, and shared ideas for general region management. In addition to meeting, we squeezed in some fun by visiting a private car collection during lunch and attending a social with Alpine Mountain Region members at Porsche of Colorado Springs. I had copious help from the local Alpine Mountain Region and would like to thank Denise Jordan, Justine Estein, Barb Treacy, Fred Veitch, and Joe Bremmer of Porsche of Colorado Springs, for all their support.

April 3rd marked the opening of activities registration for Parade in Spokane. By now you should have made your hotel reservations at one of the host hotels. I hope to meet and greet many of you up in Washington State in July. Additionally, I’ve now wrapped up a hotel plan as a convenience for those driving through Zone 9 to Parade. Under the assumption that Salt Lake City is a halfway point for many in the south and east parts of Zone 9, we are recommending that you stay at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City on July 7th, and join us for an outdoor cookout at a private home that evening to help break up your travel. On the morning of July 8th, Porsche of Salt Lake City (4 blocks from the hotel) will offer coffee and breakfast treats before you head off for the day. Road warriors can choose to do Salt Lake City to Spokane in a single day’s 10 hour drive, and check into your Parade hotel on the evening of July 8th. For those in a more relaxed mode, we have a block of rooms 6 hours north of Salt Lake City, in McCall Idaho. This will leave us about 5 hours of driving on July 9th Sunday morning and early afternoon, for arrival in Spokane during the PCA registration open hours and in plenty of time before the opening reception. Check you region’s website and/or Facebook Page for details.

2017 High Performance Drivers Ed/Autocross 101April 1, 2017 at 3R Racing

You’ve just purchased your dream car; a Porsche. Or maybe you’ve owned that beauty for a number of years and have been hearing just how great these cars are out on a race track or at an autocross, and now you’re curious. Could you actually drive on a track or speed through an autocross course in your pride and joy? Of course you can!

Join us at our first annual ‘HPDE/Autocross 101’ class that we will be holding on Saturday, April 1st from 9:00 am till noon at 3R Racing, located at 3701 S. Kalamath St. in Englewood, Colorado. This place is amazing, and during your training you will be surrounded by all types of race cars. In this class you will learn all about how to register for events, how to prepare your car for the track, pre-tech, what to do when you arrive at the track, what our instructors will teach you, possible wear and tear on the car, what is an autocross, and much more. We will have various speakers who can answer all the questions you might have before your first track experience. To get registered (and potentially change your life forever!) we will post a link on the RMR/PCA website at http://rmr.pca.org/. Look for the HPDE 101 link on the main page.

We are going to restrict this to 60 people, so register early to guarantee a spot! Of course any member is welcome, but we’re really trying to reach those of you who’ve considered participating in a HPDE, but for a variety of reasons, have never done so.

If you have any questions, contact Brian Leary at [email protected]. Hope to see you there!

I have a very close friend, who was an impetus for my Uber indoctrination. She had driven for Uber and Lyft. Mostly, she cruised around downtown, especially on into the night, waiting for a “surge” fare.

And, yes, on these shifts, in these locations, most rides were people who had had, shall we say, imbibed a bit too much.

Now, that’s innately a very good thing. She would tell me that these people had no business being behind the wheel. But, again and again, they were often belligerent. They always knew the best way home, or thought they did. She related how, sometimes, it was next to impossible, just to get an exact idea of where they were heading.

To say nothing about the occasional, uh, shall we say, release of bodily fluids.

No, she quit. After about three or four months. Which, my Uber from the airport driver told me, is the typical length of time behind the wheel.

I asked this driver how long he’s been doing it. He said two years. He was very proud; called himself a pioneer. I asked him how he likes it. And he said it was great. He set his own hours, learned to stay away from pub-crawling, and has met all sorts of interesting people, like me! It’s the people, he said … yeah, really, I’m not kidding.

I’ve read about how literally all the major automotive manufacturers are in the process of aligning themselves with one, or more, travel disruptor like Uber. They see themselves in a race to stay viable, against the new-idea upstarts that seem to pop up in sets of waves, ready to break ashore with a market capitalization that dwarfs their manufacturing cohorts.

What to do? Keep your sports car for nice days and the track. I want to know, has Uber become a verb, like Google? If not, it’s only a matter of time.

DO YOU UBER?

On some gadgets, I’m what I would consider a relatively early adopter. But when it comes to prying my hands from the wheel of my beloved automotive conveyances, I’m not exactly in a rush.

Then again, I’ve started using Uber. First there was this snowy night,

earlier this winter. I was off to a big fund-raiser downtown, and I really didn’t want to drive. I called up the app on my phone, and punched in my location and destination, and a car and driver picked me up in, like, five minutes. The ride cost $12, with tip, which was built in. Charged to my credit card. With no cash changing hands. Same for my return. And, both times, a cheerful driver inched to the curb and waited patiently for me to slip over a thin layer of slush.

Then I took Uber from home to the airport, with a companion. I reserved a time, the day before. The driver was right on time.

We got out of the car, and I took a quick look at my phone. I noticed a receipt was already in my e-mail. For the trip, not the number of passengers. Along with instructions on what I should do, if I wanted to take Uber for the return trip home.

The instructions weren’t exactly complicated. I took Uber from the airport to home. I walked up to a designated floor and door. And met a small gaggle of other Uber-doopers (Uberites? Ubermovers?) who, one by one, suddenly moved out to the drive to be picked up, all the while staring at their phones.

I was doing the same. Watching a representation of a car make its way on a map, projected on my screen, with a simultaneous readout of how many minutes away my driver was, along with what type of car and the license plate number. And the driver’s name. And a rating for my driver, submitted by a bunch of previous passengers.

And this was late on a Sunday night. My flight home was delayed three hours. I had been fretting over whether there’d

be anybody to pick me up, at all. It wasn’t a problem.

The driver made a u-turn so I could get out, right in front of my building. God forbid I’d have to cross the street. And he waited, he sort of kept guard, while I made my way inside.

I’m sold.I mean, I currently own two cars.

My Porsche and my daily driver. Now, admittedly, I’ve introduced myself to my neighbors in my building as the person who owns the copper-brown 911 that never leaves. And they always respond with, “Oh, YOU’re the owner!” Both cars have parking spaces in my building. Normally, heading downtown, I’d cruise around the block, looking for a meter. And end up in a garage, at least a few blocks from my destination. And, with gas and parking, the trip would cost me the same as the Uber hop. And take at least as long.

I always felt secure, knowing that, no matter what happened, or when I wanted to come or go, I had my transportation with me. I was beholden to nobody.

There was the time, last year, returning from Chicago, when my flight was seven hours late. United never canceled the flight. They just kept pushing back the departure time, again and again and again. We landed at 3 am. I’m not kidding. But I had my car at the airport. I got home as the sun was rising.

If I had been using SuperShuttle? They were battened down like they were waiting for an air-raid. Uber? Who knows. But, after my experiences, I think I”d chance it. My driver told me that, after dropping someone off at the airport, they head to a holding area, where they wait in line, virtually, for a fare back. And wait, and wait, if they have to.

I tried SuperShuttle a few times to the airport. But I kept meeting fellow passengers I had no interest in meeting. And visiting neighborhoods I had no interest in exploring. On average, a 30 or 40-minute ride was taking at least an hour and a half, maybe two hours. And, of course, they charge by the person, not simply the trip.

THE 34TH ANNUAL COLORADO CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE AND EXOTIC SPORTS CAR SHOW

Sunday, June 11, 2017, 9AM - 3PMArapahoe Community College5900 S Santa Fe DriveLittleton, Colorado 80120A Benefit for Ability Connection Coloradohttp://www.coloradoconcours.org

The Colorado Concours d’Elegance & Exotic Sports Car Show, which was founded in 1984 by RMR members Tom Scott and Stim Kennedy, is the largest gathering of priceless and exotic sports, classic and exotic automobiles in the Mountain States area. Over 450 treasured cars from early classics and collector cars to vintage race cars and current models will be on display. Many of these incredible cars come out only once a year for this show, to help the children of Ability Connection Colorado (ACCO).

Nearly 100 local and regional car clubs, businesses and media sponsors draw more than 14,000 spectators to generate funds for ACCO. Now in its 34th year, the show has become one of the grandest, most entertaining and most anticipated car shows in Colorado!

To date, this spectacular event has raised over $2,000,000 for ACCO’s Creative Options Early Childhood Education Centers which provide early care, intervention, prevention, support and education services to nearly 700 infants, toddlers and pre-school children and their families each year. At Creative Options, at-risk children receive developmental screening and assessment services, individualized mental health services and other services tailored to their diagnosed disability.

The Concours d’Elegance and Exotic Sports Car Show is also an excellent opportunity for corporate sponsors to experience tremendous exposure for their company. This prestigious show reaches a well educated and influential audience of car collectors and enthusiasts as well as the general public. The kids win and the corporate sponsors win. Contact Terri Armstrong at:[email protected] or by calling 303-691-9339 for more information.

The event is hosted by: The Rocky Mountain Region-Porsche Club of America / Aston Martin Owners Club / Audi Club of North America-Rocky Mountain Chapter / Colorado Shelby Breakfast Club / Colorado Springs Electric Vehicle Club / Ferrari Club of America, Rocky Mountain Region / Looking Glass Corvette Association / Lotus Colorado / Man Cave Colorado / Maserati Club Rocky Mountain / Mercedes-Benz Club of America, Mile-High Section / NSX Club of America-Southwest Region / Rocky Mountain 356 Porsche Club / Rocky Mountain Chapter-BMW Car Club of America / Rocky Mountain Jaguar Club / Rocky Mountain Saab Club of Colorado / Rocky Mountain Triumph Club / Rocky Mountain Shelby American Automobile Club / Shelby American Collection / Z Car Club of Colorado.

There are four ways RMR members can support our fundraising:1) Bring your special cars out to be judged or displayed. Click

on http://bit.ly/34Concours to sign up.2) Be a spectator. Bring the family out and enjoy the fabulous

array of Porsches, Jaguars, Ferraris, Corvettes, Mercedes Benz, BMWs, Lotus, Maseratis, as well as a long list of other marques. Log on to the Concours website and you will find a coupon offering a $1.00 discount on the $10.00 spectator entrance contribution.

3) Volunteer to help us on the day of the show. The exotic car clubs in Denver join together to host and manage this show so that all of the income can be provided to help the children. Click on http://bit.ly/34ConcoursVolunteers to sign up as a volunteer for helping with staging cars, judging and scoring, and other needed positions.

4) Donate a little extra. An additional $10 donation on the registration form would bring in more than $750 extra from our club. Of course, even if you don’t register a car you can write a separate check to ACCO, 801 Yosemite St., Denver, CO 80230.

29APRIL 2017

Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.

DRIVING EVENTS

NON-DRIVING EVENTS

Tour A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.Rally

A rally is a competitive event in which contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche

Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.Autocross (AX)An autocross is a competition in which drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AX school in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade.Driver Education (DE)

A driver education event provides a safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some

Membership SocialMembership socials provide an opportunity to

reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a membership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program varies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to

the Committee Chair or a Board member!Tech SessionA tech session is just what it sounds like–a

session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by experienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.Club Race

A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.
