Some tips this article showed me was not new knowledge but a good reminder of what is important in a child’s education. It stated that children learn best by observing, listening, exploring, experimenting and asking questions. This is vital to remember as a parent because children are always watching and listening from us, wanting to learn all the time. As children get older they enjoy taking more responsibility for their learning, and getting more involved in making decisions about learning. This knowledge is vital as the staff at Teralba PS strive to get the best out of each child. As parents there are some tips that can help you to help your child. Always remember that you are your child’s first and longest teacher. They are constantly looking to you to learn. You don’t have to be perfect but be honest. If you are unsure or don’t know, tell them. If you have a concern about something, act and talk in a way that you would expect your child to act and talk. Use appropriate language when you are around your children. Say NO when you need to say no. It’s ok if children miss out every now and then. It's always important to remember that children don’t come with a handbook and each child is different to the one before. As we work together as a whole school community our children will have the potential to reach greatness.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Last week I was reading an article on how children learn.

Traditionally at school we focus on students learning in the

traditional way literacy, maths, history and science etc. At Teralba

PS we strive to give your children a world class education, not just

inside the classroom but outside the classroom too. Some tips this

article showed me was not new knowledge but a good reminder

of what is important in a child’s education. It stated that children

learn best by observing, listening, exploring, experimenting and

asking questions. This is vital to remember as a parent because

children are always watching and listening from us, wanting to

learn all the time. As children get older they enjoy taking more

responsibility for their learning, and getting more involved in

making decisions about learning. This knowledge is vital as the

staff at Teralba PS strive to get the best out of each child. As

parents there are some tips that can help you to help your child.

Always remember that you are your child’s first and longest

teacher. They are constantly looking to you to learn. You don’t

have to be perfect but be honest. If you are unsure or don’t know,

tell them. If you have a concern about something, act and talk in a

way that you would expect your child to act and talk. Use

appropriate language when you are around your children. Say NO

when you need to say no. It’s ok if children miss out every now

and then. It's always important to remember that children don’t

come with a handbook and each child is different to the one

before. As we work together as a whole school community our

children will have the potential to reach greatness.

healthy life choices. All lessons were tailored to the needs of the students. Each class got a visit from

Healthy Harold with each class having a great day.

"Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes & Dirty Beasts bursts off the page in a spectacular live show, taking the

world’s best-loved fairy tales and rearranging them with some surprising and hilarious twists.

Frighteningly funny and seriously silly, Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes & Dirty Beasts is the perfect family

entertainment - for children 5 to 105. It delights and disgusts in equal measures.

HEADSTART PROGRAM Last week our wonderful Year 5/6 students attended the Headstart program at Lake Macquarie High School.

Headstart is a program that is run throughout all local primary schools to utilise the facilities and staff at the

high school. Students were able to participate in a variety of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics) lessons. Students were very engaged and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Please note although

some parents are unsure if their child will be attending Lake Macquarie High School, Head Start is still a vital

part of the curriculum taught at Teralba Public School. Staff work very hard to ensure that Head Start is

relevant and that all lessons are in line with the Australian curriculum.

Here’s what our school captain had to say about Head Start:

On Friday we travelled to the high school for a STEM day, when we all got there we waited in the school hall until 9 o clock. Mr Maher gave us a talk about head start and talked to us about history and science and how one cannot live without the other. After that someone from the Australian Maritime Museum gave us a talk about some history and about shipwrecks in the local area. After that we did some awesome activities such as barbie doll bungee jumping with elastic bands, we also did some awesome robotics using Spheros. Spheros are commanded by an app on a phone. You programmed them to go forward at certain speed and turn at certain angles, high schoolers helped us work them out. Next we did some drama which was so much fun, we played a bunch of exaggeration and reaction games. This was run by 4 well prepared high school kids. There was also this excellent activity showing us a bunch of old nails that the Australian Maritime Museum had collected on scuba diving expeditions into some extremely old shipwrecks and an old prosthetic leg that German Shepherd wore in World War 1. On this spectacular day we also did some awesome windmill making using paper and a toothpick, amongst all the super fun activities we got to have two breaks. In these breaks the canteen was open and in the canteen was a bunch of lollies and good drinks, and in these breaks we got to meet a bunch of cool people from other schools. All round the day was amazing.

IPLAY

Get Active!

Regular physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Making physical activity a priority and

encouraging good habits in children from an early age is important and can help them to develop the skills

they need to be active throughout their lives.

Why is being active important?

Children benefit greatly from being active as it can:

Promote healthy growth and development

Build strong bones and muscles

Improve movement skills

Improve cardiovascular fitness

Help achieve and maintain a healthy weight

Improve academic achievement

Help relaxation

Provide opportunities to make friends

Improve self-esteem and self-confidence

Children who are not physically active enough will not have the opportunity to gain these benefits and are at

an increased risk of becoming overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese long term can contribute to

conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and heart disease.

Dear Teralba School Community,

The Department of Education have recently released a policy document called “School Community Charter”.

This document outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public

schools to ensure our learning environments are collaborative, supportive and cohesive. The School

Community Charter is a valuable document as it underpins the values and beliefs we hold here at Teralba

Public School.

Attached to this newsletter is a copy of this policy. As a school, we are requesting that you read through the

document and return the below slip to the school. This is so we can ensure that all members of the school

community are well informed of the principles we hold at Teralba Public school.

As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to speak with me.

Chelsea Perrett
